Caveats on the years' registers (7)

What the compiler noted beside the entry itself, and what the table above does not show:

  • T75 — T75 occupies two cards: 569 (card 1, entries 1-10) and 570 (card 2, entries 11-14, with the addition „T75 - c.d.”). The total from the card: „Razem dymów 26” (26 underlined twice). The entries give 22 + 4 = 26 — IT AGREES. The siglum is written „T.75.”, and immediately after it stands a word thoroughly struck out with a thick horizontal stroke, illegible even under sevenfold magnification (by its outline it looks like a struck-out name of the village). No entry breaks the buildings down into hearths, and so the field the breakdown of buildings is everywhere empty; the words „propinacja” and „karczma” are not in this extract, the word „Browar” stands once, in entry 1.
  • T89 — The extract begins on card 3 (entries 1–2) and ends on card 4 (entries 3–9, „c.d. T89 –”) with the summing „Razem 20 dymów.”. On card 3, higher up, stands a separate, one-line note: „T89 zob. Pruszyn” — a cross-reference to the village of Pruszyn, where the holding of Zdany belonging to that estate is recorded (cf. T90, entry K, „częś. do dóbr Pruszyn – dziedz.” and the closing of T94 „i zob. Pruszyn”). The whole of the buildings of T89 in this village are manor houses alone — not a single inn, brewery or mill.
  • T₀89 — The list of possessors of 1789 runs through three cards: 4 (one entry, Maryanna Suffczyńska, with the cross-reference „Zob. Błogoszcz.”), 6 (a heading line + two columns of 11 lines each = 23 entries) and 7 („T₀89 – c.d.”, 2 entries). Together 26 entries; the list gives no hearths, and so the hearths figure and the total from the card are empty by design. THE ORDER: card 6 is written in two columns. A reading by columns has been adopted — first the whole left-hand column (entries 3–13), then the whole right-hand one (entries 14–24). The card does not number the entries, and so an order by lines (alternately left–right) is formally possible; the choice of columns follows from the fact that the brace takes in a continuous block of lines EXCLUSIVELY in the right-hand column. THE BRACE: on card 6, below the line „cz. Adama Izdebskiego”, a horizontal stroke has been drawn, and from it a vertical stroke runs downwards separating the right-hand column — together a frame taking in the last six lines of the right-hand column (entries 19–24). Along the right-hand edge of the card, vertically, stands the inscription „nie wysiewają 10 korcy”. On card 7 the same words are repeated horizontally beside the brace joining the two entries there (25–26). The reach of the brace: 8 entries — 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 (card 6) and 25 and 26 (card 7). Entries 1–18 are NOT taken in by the brace. In the whole list there is not a single mention of propination, of a brewery, of an inn or of a pledge. REPETITIONS: four forenames of the Zdanowskis occur in the list twice — Tomasz (entries 13 and 19), Szymon (17 and 20), Mateusz (11 and 24) and Wawrzeniec (9 and 26). The card distinguishes them in no way; these may be two different men of the same forename or one possessor of two holdings. I do not resolve it. A COMPARISON: T₀89 names 13 Zdanowskis, T94 and T90 12 each, T89 ten. In T₀89 there is no Kasper (he is in T90 and T94), but there are two Wawrzeńcy — a forename which in T94 appears only as a patronymic („Szymona po Wawrzyńcu”). There appear as well two possessors absent from every register of this village: Grzegorz Chromiński and Stanisław Jezowski.
  • T90 — T90 occupies two cards: 570 (card 2, entries A-J) and 571 (card 3, entry K with the addition „c. d. T90.”). The card gives the total TWICE: on card 2, below entry J, stands „Razem 24 dymów wiejskich 2giej klasy;” (24 underlined twice) — this is a partial total, closing 3+1+2+1+1+1+1+1+1+12 = 24; on card 3, after entry K) = 2 hearths has been added, stands the final total „Razem 26 dymów wiejskich 2giej kl.” (26 underlined twice). In the field the total from the card I have recorded 26, because that is the total of the whole extract; the entries give 24 + 2 = 26 — IT AGREES. The entries are lettered A)-K), not numbered. This extract HAS NONE of the marks „/pł. of./”, „/n. pł. of./” or „/p. of./” — on the right-hand side there stands instead of them a column with the class of the hearth, at all the entries and in both summing lines the same: THE SECOND („dymy wiejskie 2giej klasy”). T90 does not break the buildings down into hearths. The words „propinacja”, „browar” and „karczma” are not in this extract.
  • T94 — The whole extract fits on card 5 and ends with the summing „Razem 24 dymy; i zob. Pruszyn;” — the last words are a cross-reference to the village of Pruszyn, where the holding of Zdany belonging to that estate is recorded; by that holding the total of 24 is incomplete. No entry names an inn, a brewery or propination.
  • S87 — The 1787 census in a single line, at the very top of card 1: „S87 - Zdary - 70 l. + 8 ż: razem 78 l.”; the figure „78 l.” underlined. The name of the village stands here in the form „Zdary” — through an „r”, and not „Zdany” as in the heading of the card and in all four cartographic lines; the reading checked from a sevenfold magnification, the letter „r” beyond doubt. I do not smooth the discrepancy away — „Zdary” goes to the recorded variants. The card names no dissenters. The parish of Zbuczyn is not covered by the printed edition of Fr. B. Kumor (ABMK 39/1979 covers the parish of Trzebieszów), and so of a second, independent check of the figure of the population THERE IS NONE. The figures are recorded in the village's the 1787 census field.
  • V48 — The cartographic lines of the village of Zdany in full: card 1 — „P. Zdany.”, „Top. Zdany.”, „Held. Zdany.” (and a fainter addition „por. Pruszyn.” [reading uncertain] to the right of the „Top.” line); card 3 — „V48 - Zdany.”. All four give the same, present-day form of the name.

The card-index entries

Every extract for this locality in the wording of the cards, year by year. One block is one occurrence: this person, in this year. At a collective item the same card text stands beside every person named — because the card names them together and they must not be separated. The hearths given at a collective item are an equal division among those named, not a reading.

1775 T75Hearth tax register 1775

Sufforyńska„Wojciechowej”
T751 hearth1) cz. Wojciechowej Sufforyńskiej w Browarze - dym 1,card 1)
A WOMAN. The card gives no forename of her own, only the husband-derived form „Wojciechowej” — entered literally in the recorded form of the name, the given name empty. The surname read at sevenfold magnification as „Sufforyńskiej”: after „Su” two tall „ff”, then a distinct „o”, „r”, „y” with an ogonek, „ń”, „skiej” [reading uncertain]. On card 4, meanwhile (T₀89, the assignment of colleague B), stands „Maryanny Suffczyńskiej, chor. łukow.”, and the dictionary of the neighbourhood knows the form „Suffczyńsk-”; I do not, however, bend the reading to the list — in the surname I leave what is to be seen on the card, and I report the discrepancy. A BREWERY: the word „w Browarze” written with a capital letter, the reading certain. This is not a breakdown of the buildings into hearths (the card does not say „1 browar = 1 d.”), only an indication of where the holding lies, so I do not fill in the the breakdown of buildings field.
SiestrzewitowskiKrzysztof
T751 hearth10) cz. Krzysztofa Siestrzuhowskiego - dym 1,card 1)
The surname on card 1 is written MORE BRIEFLY than elsewhere and cannot be resolved into letters with certainty: after „Siestrz” two humps and a tall loop without a crossbar can be seen, then „owskiego” — I read „Siestrzuhowskiego” [reading uncertain]. On card 2 (T90 entry B), where the same hand writes more slowly, stands the full „Siestrzewitowskiego” with a distinct „t” with a long crossbar; the same on card 4 (T89). The forename in both places is Krzysztof, and the entry the same (1 hearth), so in the surname I give „Siestrzewitowski”; the form of card 1 remains literally in the text of the extract.
Kozłowczyk
T751 hearth2) cz. Kozłowczyka - dym 1,card 1)
The card gives no forename — the surname alone in the genitive, so the given name and the recorded form of the name are empty (this is not a husband-derived form). The surname „Kozłowczyka” [reading uncertain]: after „Ko” the loop of a „z”, then an „ł” with a distinct crossbar, then „owczyka”. Neither the form „Kozłowczyk” nor any close to it is in `SLOWNIK-OKOLICY.md` — this is a surname new in this neighbourhood.
ChranowskiJózef
T751 hearth3) cz. Józefa Chranowskiego - dym 1,card 1)
The surname [reading uncertain]. The ligature „Chr” is the same as in „Chromieńskiego” on card 4, further there are visible „a”, „n”, „o”, „w”, „skiego” — without a „z” after the „r”, so I read „Chranowskiego”. The dictionary of the neighbourhood knows, however, „Chrzanowski”, and the village itself has Chromińskis (T90 entry H). I leave the reading of the card and report it.

the same entry also names: Jasiński Paweł2 persons on 2 hearths

The card writes „Jasinskich” (without a stroke over the „n”); in the surname I give the unified „Jasiński”. The same family returns in T90 entry C) — there too „Jasińskich”. On card 6 (T₀89, the assignment of colleague B) stands in turn „cz. Pawła Jasienskiego”, that is the side form „Jasieński”.

T752 · each 16) cz. Adama, i Franciszka Izdebskiego po 1 dymie - dymów 2,card 1)

the same entry also names: Izdebski Franciszek2 persons on 2 hearths

The card writes the surname in the SINGULAR — „Izdebskiego” — although the persons are two and although in entries 4 and 5 the same hand uses the correct plural („Jasinskich”, „Radzikowskich”). The reading checked at sixfold magnification: the ending „-kiego”, not „-kich”. I do not smooth the discrepancy away; to both persons I give the surname in the nominative „Izdebski”.

JezowskiMateusz
T751 hearth7) cz. Mateusza Jzowskiego - dym 1,card 1)
The card writes the surname „Jzowskiego” — after the capital „J” there follows at once the tall loop of a „z”, without a vowel; checked at eightfold magnification and compared with „Józefa” in entry 3 (there between the „J” and the loop stands a distinct „ó”) and with „Jasinskich” in entry 4. The letters are therefore certain, but „Jzowski” is not a possible form of a surname. In the surname I give „Jezowski”, because the same village has Jezowskis in T90 entry I) („Tomasza Jezewskiego”), in T89 („Tomasza Jezowskiego”) and in T94; the form of the card remains literally in the text of the extract. [reading uncertain — the resolution of the surname, not of the letters]. Left to the decision of the owner.

Tomasza” are therefore two persons (Bartłomiej and Tomasz), not one — otherwise the entry would give eight forenames against nine hearths. The entry runs over two lines; at the beginning of the second line, before „Jakóba”, stands a small sign, probably a struck-out or corrected number, illegible.

A NOTE ON THE SYNTAX: „sukcesorów” stands twice in this enumeration (before „Antoniego” and before „Mateusza”); it has been assumed that each time it governs only the nearest forename, as throughout the card index („sukc. If it governed the whole group that follows, the number of persons would still come to 10, so the card's total does not settle it — the resolution is conventional, not drawn from the source. T₀89T₀89 – część na Zdanach – Maryanny Suffczyńskiej, chor. łukow. Zob. Błogoszcz. (wymieniona jest pod par. Pruszyn)card 4)
a woman — the surname in the feminine form, as on the card. The abbreviation „chor. łukow.” has been expanded as chorążyna łukowska, the wife of the standard-bearer of Łuków (the feminine form, as attested in the card index in „chorążyna ziemi mielnickiej”) — the expansion itself is a grammatical conjecture, the card gives the abbreviation alone. „Zob. Błogoszcz.” [reading uncertain — a place name from outside the corpus hitherto]; the addition „(wymieniona jest pod par. Pruszyn)” says that this possessor (a woman) is described by the card index under the parish of Pruszyn

The entry runs over two lines. Wawrzyniec and Jakób, named here as fathers, stand in their own right in T75 entry 8; I do not merge persons between the years.
