Caveats on the years' registers (7)

What the compiler noted beside the entry itself, and what the table above does not show:

  • T75 — Beneath the list, on the right: „Razem dymów 12.” (doubly underlined). The sum of the entries 2+5+4+1 = 12 — it agrees. In the heading the name of the village is in the form „Tarczew”, otherwise than the „Tarcze” in the heading of the card, in V48 and in the cartographic notes — the discrepancy I do not smooth over. The extract is written in black ink.
  • T89 — A continuous extract, without a numbering of the entries — the numbers 1–4 are editorial, for order. Closed on the right-hand side, beneath a long horizontal stroke: „Razem 10 dymów.”. The sum of the entries 4+1+4+1 = 10 — it agrees. The card index gives no breakdown of the buildings into kinds: beside both collective entries stands only the formula „(po 1 dworze)”, so the breakdown of buildings is the manor house alone, in a number equal to the number of holdings. THE DIFFERENCES AGAINST T90 ON CARD 519: (1) Marjanna Jastrzębska has here 1 hearth, in T90 two; (2) among the Borkowskis in T90 stand the living Grzegorz (with his brother) and Łukasz, and here in their place the successors of Ignacy and the successors of Antoni — no Grzegorz and no Łukasz does T89 name; (3) Józef Cielemęcki, living in T75 and T90, appears in T89 already only as successors. The discrepancies I do not smooth over.
  • T₀89 — A LIST OF THE POSSESSORS OF HOLDINGS, WITHOUT HEARTHS — hence the hearths figure = null in every entry. It begins on card 3) (card 3) in a TWO-COLUMN ARRANGEMENT: four lines with two holdings each, entries 1–4 are the left column, 5–8 the right; the continuation stands on card 4) (card 4) under the heading „T₀89 – c.d.”, there already in one column — three holdings more. In all ELEVEN HOLDINGS, that is as many as the hearths counted by T90 and T94; in the list each holding is one possessor. THE ORDER of entries 1–8 is taken by columns (the whole left, then the whole right), after the two-column arrangement adopted in the card index; a reading by lines (left–right, left–right) would give the same eleven persons in another order, and I do not rule that possibility out. THE ANNOTATION „nie wysiewa 10 korcy” THIS LIST DOES NOT HAVE EVEN ONCE — neither on card 3) nor on card 4); the brace with the vertical inscription, which the card index sets beside such additions, is on neither of the two cards. NEITHER PROPINATION, NOR A BREWERY, NOR AN INN, NOR A PLEDGE does the list note either. The only addition beyond the possessor's surname itself is „zaprzys. Maryanna Cielemęcka” beside the orphans of Józef Cielemęcki (card 4).
  • T90 — The extract is written in BLUE ink (the whole of the rest of the card in black). Entries A–D, the figures of the hearths ranged to the right and long strokes drawn out to them; closed with the line „Razem – 11 dymów wiejskich 2giej klasy.” (the figure doubly underlined). The sum of the entries 4+4+1+2 = 11 — it agrees. The full formula „dymy wiejskie 2giej klasy” is written out only at entry A; at B, C and D it is replaced by repetition marks („ „ „ „), copied as they stand. The word „wiejskie” is written in the old spelling, nearest to „wieyskie” [reading uncertain as to the „i”/„y”]; the sense (village hearths, as distinct from town ones) admits of no doubt.
  • T94 — A continuous extract, without a numbering of the entries — the numbers 1–4 are editorial, for order. Closed on the right-hand side, beneath a long horizontal stroke: „Razem 11 dymów;”. The sum of the entries 4+4+2+1 = 11 — it agrees, and it is the same eleven as in the T90 of 1790 (card 1). T94 returns also to the state of T90 wherever T89 gave something else: Marjanna Jastrzębska has again 2 hearths (not 1), Grzegorz „z bratem” and Łukasz Borkowski are again among the living possessors, and Józef Cielemęcki appears again alone, without successors.
  • O83 — A short description of the village: „cząstki szlacheckie;” — without persons and without hearths. Recorded also in the village's the description of the village field. The siglum with the Roman numeral in brackets: „O83(IX)”.
  • V48 — The extract V48 is the bare name of the village, without hearths and without persons.

The card-index entries

Every extract for this locality in the wording of the cards, year by year. One block is one occurrence: this person, in this year. At a collective item the same card text stands beside every person named — because the card names them together and they must not be separated. The hearths given at a collective item are an equal division among those named, not a reading.

Maryanna Cielemęcka is a WOMAN — the surname in the feminine form as it stands on the card, and in the nominative, not in the genitive like the rest of the list. T944 · share of 0.80brothercz. Łukasza, Grzegorza z bratem, Jana po Krzysztofie, Jana po Marcinie, Borkowskich – po 1 dymie – 4 d.;card 3)

the same entry also names: Borkowski Łukasz, Borkowski Grzegorz, Borkowski Jan, Borkowski Jan5 persons on 4 hearths

Five persons against four hearths — as in T90 on card 1): Grzegorz's brother counted together with him on one hearth, the card gives no forename for him. „z bratem” stands here in the run of the line, and not as an insertion written above it as in T90. The two Jans are distinguished by their fathers: „po Krzysztofie” and „po Marcinie” (T90: „syna Krzysztofa”, „syna Marcina”); the fathers I do not enter as separate persons, because the card index names them only to distinguish the sons.

JastrzębskaMarianna
T942 hearthswidowcz. wdowy Marjanny Jastrzębskiej 2 d.;card 3)
A WOMAN with a forename of her own, the surname in the feminine form as it stands on the card. Here the description „wdowy” stands BEFORE the forename (in T90: „Marjanny Jastrzębskiej wdowy”). The forename written „Marjanny” — just as in T90 and T89, and otherwise than in T₀89 on the same card, where „Maryanny” stands.
CielemęckiJózef
T941 hearthcz. Józefa Cielemęckiego 1 d.;card 3)

Józef Cielemęcki stands here again as a living possessor, although T89 of 1789 (card 2) already names only his successors, and T₀89 of that same year 1789 (card 4) — his orphans. I do not smooth over the discrepancy between the years.

This locality in the full edition of the hearth-tax registers — together with a search across all persons, a modern map, Perthées’s engraving of 1786 and a statistical summary.
