Hearth Tax Registers of the Łuków Land 1775–1794

Krzymosze

Parish of Zbuczyn, łukowski county.

Dear reader, remember that this is an AI study, that it may contain errors; treat it as indicative and verify it for yourself.

Offices: Kuczyński (deputy cupbearer of Mielnik (podczaszy mielnicki) · wife of the chamberlain of the Drohiczyn Land (podkomorzyna ziemi drohickiej))

More than five hearths in one hand: Kuczyński (48)

Extracts from outside the registers

Records under sigla which the card index does not expand. They give no hearths, so they enter no total.

Sł. G.Sł. G. - Krzymosze z przydomkiem Bayki. -
note: A one-line note on the form of the name, without hearths and without persons — the same type of record as „MP”, „Top.”, „Held.” or „P.” on other cards, and so it does not enter the reckoning of hearths. The first part of the siglum I read as „Sł.” (a letter whose ascender has a loop crossed by a stroke — „ł”, not „t”), the second as „G.”; together most probably Słownik Geograficzny [the reading of the expansion uncertain — the card index does not explain its sigla, and in the corpus so far „Sł. G.” does not occur once]. The content of the note matters for the name: it confirms that „Bayki” is a BYNAME of the village of Krzymosze and not a separate place — and „Krzymosze Bayki” of T94 and „Krzymosze Bayki i Ciepiele” of T90 must be read in that way too.

spellings on the cards: Krzymosze, Krzymosze Bayki, Krzymosze Bayki i Ciepiele, Krzymoszyce

district of łukowski · parish of Zbuczyn · cards 1

the hereditary village of the Kuczyńskis, with the byname Bayki, with the holding Ciepiele and with a holding in the village of Wielgorz; a windmill [O83 (IX)]; a chapel in the manor house [V48]; 48 village hearths of the 2nd class [T90]

Without an extract for 1789 — no card of this village carries that tariff. It is a missing extract in the card index, not a gap in the numbering of the cards.

The card-index entries

Every extract for this locality in the wording of the cards, year by year. One block is one occurrence: this person, in this year. At a collective item the same card text stands beside every person named — because the card names them together and they must not be separated. The hearths given at a collective item are an equal division among those named, not a reading.

T9048 hearthshereditary ownerhereditary ownerT90 - wieś Krzymosze Bayki i Ciepiele - dziedz. Kuczyńskiego podczaszego mielnickiego z cz. na wsi Wielgorze - 48 dymów wiejskich 2giej klasy. -
One item for the whole village, the numbering „1” editorial. The card gives no forename for the hereditary owner — the surname and the office alone remain. The surname is written over a correction: the beginning of the word (after the capital „K”) is blotted with a thick pen drawn twice, the ending „-yńskiego” is legible; the reading „Kuczyńskiego” [reading uncertain as to the blotted letters] is supported by the O83 („Kuczynskiej”) and T94 („Kuczynskiego”) lines on the same card, where the surname is written cleanly. The office „podczaszego mielnickiego” (the Mielnik Land) — I checked the initial letter of the word separately: four arcs before the „e” (m + i), as in „mi drohickiej” in the O83 line, and not three with a little knot, as in „wiejskich” two lines below; „mielnicki” is also a form well attested in the corpus (the Kaliccy, the Markowscy). NOTE ON THE TOTAL: the 48 hearths cover — directly from the wording — not only Krzymosze Bayki and Ciepiele, but also „cz. na wsi Wielgorze”, that is a holding lying in another village. The figure 48 is therefore not a pure figure of the hearths of Krzymosze; the card index does not break it down, and neither do I. The figure „48” underlined.

T9448 hearthshereditary ownerhereditary ownerT94 - Krzymosze Bayki, wieś Kuczynskiego, dymów 48.;
One item for the whole village, the numbering „1” editorial. Here the card gives neither forename nor office — the surname alone; the office „podczaszy mielnicki” comes from T90 and I do not add it here. Over the „n” no stroke is visible, so I normalise to „Kuczyński”. The number of hearths is the same as in T90 (48), although T94 names the village more narrowly — „Krzymosze Bayki”, without Ciepiele and without the holding in the village of Wielgorze. The figure „48” underlined; after it the card sets a full stop and a semicolon.

O83 O83A description of 1783 [the expansion of the siglum to be confirmed]

Kuczyńskideputy cupbearer of Mielnik (podczaszy mielnicki)wife of the chamberlain of the Drohiczyn Land (podkomorzyna ziemi drohickiej)wife of the chamberlain of Drohiczyn (podkomorzyna drohicka)
O83hereditary ownerhereditary ownerO83 (IX) - Krzymoszyce - wieś Kuczynskiej, podkomorzyny zie-mi drohickiej; młyn wietrzny;
A WOMAN — and the only person on the whole card written in a feminine form: the surname in the feminine genitive („Kuczynskiej”), and beside it the husband-derived title „podkomorzyny ziemi drohickiej” (podkomorzyna = the wife or the widow of the chamberlain of Drohiczyn). The card gives no forename, so the given name is empty; this is not a husband-derived form standing in place of a forename, but the absence of a forename, so I leave the recorded form of the name empty as well. Over the „n” in „Kuczynskiej” I see no stroke (in the T90 line the stroke over the „ń” is there) — I normalise to „Kuczyńska”, but I record it. A DISCREPANCY BETWEEN THE YEARS WHICH I DO NOT SMOOTH OVER: O83 (1783) gives the village to a WOMAN and to the title of podkomorzyna of DROHICZYN, while T90 (1790) and T94 (1794) — to a man, T90 titling him deputy cupbearer of MIELNIK. Two different offices and two different sexes; the merging of persons is a separate, later stage, so I record both wordings as they stand. The name of the village in the form „Krzymoszyce” — the only such occurrence on the card. The word „ziemi” is carried over to the next line („zie-mi”); I write it with the hyphen as on the card. The number in brackets I read as the Roman „IX”, just as with Karcze, Ruska Wola and Krasusy Łęcznowola.
