„Separate entries for persons” means: separate entries of a given name with a surname and a byname, not persons proved to have existed. The same man recorded in four registers is one entry, but two namesakes from the same village are sometimes impossible to tell apart, and over twenty years a parcel could pass to a son of the same name. The hearths given at a collective entry are an equal division among those named — a calculation, not a reading.

The year 1789 stands twice in the table, and rightly so: these are two different sources. The register gives the hearths, the list of parcel-holders does not — which is why the list carries a dash and not a zero, and the hearths of 1789 are not counted twice.

Jasiński
1775Hearth tax register 1775
T752 hearthsczęść Jasińskiego – 2 dymycard 1)
The card gives no forename — the surname alone in the genitive, so the field the recorded form of the name is left empty (this is not a husband-derived form). The writing on the card: „Jasińskiego” (not „Jasieńskiego”) — after „Jas” comes an „i” with a dot, then „ń” with an oblique stroke. The figure „2” underlined. Cf. card 5 (T₀89), where the holding at Borki is held by Xawery Jasieński, swordbearer.

T₀89T₀89 – c. d. części na Borkach Xawerego Jasieńskiego, miecz. Łukowskiego. Zob. Dziewule.card 5)
CONTINUATION of the T₀89 transcript from card 4) — the card itself says so with the abbreviation „c. d.” (continued) right after the siglum, and that is why the entry goes into the same transcript, with its own card number. The whole of card 5) carries this one entry. The card says three things about it: that the holding lies „na Borkach” (at Borki), that it is held by Xawery Jasieński, swordbearer of Łuków, and that it is set out under the village of DZIEWULE („Zob. Dziewule.” — see Dziewule). This is already the third cross-reference to Dziewule in this village — the previous two stand in T90 (entry F, card 2) and in T94 (entry 6, card 3), and a fourth, with a number of hearths, in T89 (entry 1, card 2): „cz. Jana Jastrzębskiego 2 d. dwor. — zob. Dziewule”). Dziewule lies outside this study, so Xawery Jasieński's holding cannot be weighed in hearths from this card index — a matter for the owner to decide. The entry lies OUTSIDE the brace „nie wysiewają 10 korcy”, which closes at the bottom of card 4) and does not carry over to this card: card 5) has neither a brace nor a vertical inscription in the margin.
A KEY FIGURE — I record STRICTLY what stands on the card, without merging. FORENAME: „Xawerego”, with an „X” bearing a horizontal stroke over the letter; the card gives ONLY this one forename — it has neither „Franciszka” nor „Ksawerego” nor an initial. I therefore record the given name = „Xawery”, in the card's spelling. SURNAME: „Jasieńskiego”, that is with an „e” between „Jasi-” and „-ńskiego”; I checked this at twenty-times magnification and compared it with the same surname on card 1) (T75, „cz. Jasińskiego”), where that „e” is absent — these are two different spellings on two cards of the same village, and I transcribe both faithfully, each on its own card. OFFICE: the card writes „miecz.” with a full stop and carries the word over to the next line as „Łukowskiego.” — that is, „miecznik łukowski” (swordbearer of Łuków); the expansion of the abbreviation „miecz.” is unambiguous. The card does NOT call him castle court judge of Łuków or any other office — if this is the same person as Franciszek Ksawery Jasiński, castle court judge of Łuków, that is settled at the index stage, not here. HEARTHS: the card gives no figure (and cannot give one — T₀89 knows no hearths); for the full record of this holding the card refers to the village of Dziewule.

THE SECOND MAIN RECORD OF THE JASIŃSKI ESTATE. The surname „Jasińskiego” — with an „i”, with a stroke over the „n”. The forename only abbreviated „Franc.” (without „Xawerego”, unlike in T90). The office is copied literally. The word „cz.” is added above the line, before the siglum. These 44 hearths cover — as the card itself says — also the holdings in the listed villages, not Dziewule alone. The name read as „Kostostawach” [reading uncertain]: after „Ko” comes an „s”, then a tall letter with a crossbar („t”) and an „o”, the line breaks at „Kosto-”, and the following one begins „stawach” (the letter after „sta” is wide, with two arcs — a „w”, not an „n”). In T₀89 on card 6) the same place in the list — between „Januszówce” and „Borkach” — is occupied by „Koziestanach”; that word has a clear „z” with a tail below the line after „Ko” and ends in „-stanach”, so it is not the same record and I do not bend this reading to match it; „Chromney” = Chromna. „Smolance” is struck out and replaced by the cross-reference mark „ˣ”, which at the bottom of the card is resolved in black ink: „x i Krasusach Smolance;”. At the right-hand edge, after the striking-out, there stands also a sign „x” and a word read as „Łukowa” [reading uncertain]. In the listing of the buildings, the figure beside „chat. o … gosp.” is reworked: it reads „2” after a correction from „1” [reading uncertain] — it does not affect the total of hearths (1+5+6+30+2 = 44). Originally it read „2 chat. bez gruntu i ogr.”, corrected to „2 chat. z ogr.”.

THE FOURTH MAIN RECORD OF THE JASIŃSKI ESTATE — the only one of these six cards in which the surname is written with „ie”: „Jasienskiego”. The forename alone „Xawerego”, the office only „miecznika Łukowskiego”. T₀89 gives no hearths, so the hearths figure = null. Eight villages, including Dziewule itself in first place — a wider set than in T90 and T94 (there four villages beside Dziewule): Januszówka, Koziestany and Krasusy are added. For two abbreviated names the maker of the card index added his own expansions at the bottom: „1) prawdop. Borki Kosiorki!” and „2) Krasusze Smolanka” — this is his own guess, not the text of the register.

I leave the discrepancy open — to be resolved by the owner of the card index. The word „pisarza” is written in abbreviation [reading uncertain].
A CORRECTION OF THE READING, 19 IX 2026: the first reading gave „pisarza ziem. i grodz. brzeskiego”. The card has „czerskiego” — this was checked on an enlargement of the heading of the T90 of card 3 of Gołaszyn, and all the remaining extracts of this person say the same: the T₀89 of Gołaszyn, the T89, T90, O83 and T₀89 of Ławki, and the T₀89 of Zalesie. A list of the possessors of 1789 — without hearths, the hearths figure empty in line with the rule for T₀89. THE SURNAME: on the card stands „Jasieńskiego”, with „ie” in the second syllable and a distinct stroke over the „n” (checked at three-times magnification); in line with the rule of the card index I write the headword form „Jasiński”, and record the actual form from the card here. This is the same man as Franciszek Ksawery Jasiński, whom T₀89 calls „miecznikiem łukowskim”, swordbearer of Łuków, also at Krasusze Smolanka, and whom T90 and T94 of Dziewule count with his holding in Dziewule together with the holdings at Jasionka, Okniny, Chromna and Borki Kosiorki (40 hearths); here the card index adds outright „zob. Dziewule”, so the Januszówka holding too belongs to the same complex. THE CROSS-REFERENCE IS NOT DRAWN INTO ANY TOTAL — T₀89 gives no totals at all.

The abbreviation beside the surname is a title, not a forename — this is the largest Jasiński holding in the village in 1775 and belongs either to Franciszek Ksawery Jasiński or to his father Józef.
„Wᵃ” is not a forename but an abbreviated courtesy title — „W[ielmożneg]o” (the Worshipful). The card gives no forename for this person. With eleven hearths in Jasionka, only Franciszek Ksawery Jasiński or his father Józef, castle regent of Łuków, comes into question — the card index does not settle which, and neither do we.

T8932 hearths1 manor house, 3 brewery, 3 inn, 25 cottagesT89 — Baltazara Jasińskiego pisarza ziemi czerskiey z częściami na wsiach Gołaszynie i Zalesiu: dwór, 3 brow., 3 karcz., 20 chat. o 1 gosp., 5 chat. 2 ogrod. ~~bez gr. i ogr.~~ = 32 d.card 1)
THE RECKONING CLOSES: 1 dwór + 3 browary + 3 karczmy + 20 chałup o 1 gospodarzu + 5 chałup o 2 ogrodnikach = 32, and the card itself gives „= 32 d.” (the figure underlined twice). The reading is thus confirmed by the reckoning. The phrase „5 chat. 2 ogrod.” counts as 5 hearths (just as „7 chat. 2 ogrod.” in Krynka, card, where the reckoning likewise closes) — „2 ogrod.” speaks of the occupancy of the cottage, not of separate buildings; in the breakdown of buildings both groups of cottages are summed into the key `chaty` (20 + 5 = 25). ¶ BREWERIES AND INNS ARE HERE NAMED OUTRIGHT, in the abbreviations „brow.” and „karcz.”, both THREE in number — the reading of both words and of both figures is certain, and the reckoning confirms them. ¶ A CAUTION ON MERGING: 32 hearths is the figure for the COMBINED ESTATE — Ławki TOGETHER with the hereditary owner's holdings at Gołaszyn and Zalesie; the village itself has 18 hearths in T90 and in T94. Three breweries and three inns must therefore not be assigned to Ławki alone. ¶ In the last line the author struck out the phrase „bez gr. i ogr.” [the reading of the struck-out phrase uncertain — the stroke runs through the middle of the letters]; I leave it in the text of the extract in struck-out form, because it has no bearing on the total.

The card writes the surname „Jasinskiego”; the form standardised to „Jasiński” in accordance with the rule (Jasiński = Jasieński). The office on this card is shortened to „pisarza ziemi czerskiey”, without the castle office.

T₀89propination (the right to sell drink)T₀89 – folw. Baltazara Jasieńskiego, pisarza ziem. i grodz. czerskiego z częściami na Gołaszynie i Zalesiu; propinacjacard 2)
A list of the possessors of holdings from 1789 — without hearths, hence the hearths figure empty (in accordance with the rule for T₀89). ¶ PROPINATION: the word stands at the end of the second line, at the very right-hand edge of the card, and its last letters run off the edge of the card. Checked with one three-and-a-half-fold magnification of the right-hand margin: the full „propinacj-” is visible with the ending broken off; I HOLD THE READING OF THE WORD TO BE CERTAIN, only the inflectional ending is broken off. ¶ The abbreviation after the siglum I read as „folw.” (folwark, a grange) — the glyph is a run-together ligature „fo” with „lw.” added; the same formula stands beside Domaszewnica („T₀89 – folw. Pawła Domaszewskiego, stolnika łukowskiego: propinacja”) and beside Jamielnik („T₀89 – folwark wsiów Jamielnik i Szyszki”). ¶ The extract confirms that Jasiński's holdings at GOŁASZYN and ZALESIE entered into one estate complex with Ławki — just as in T89 on card 1). This is the answer to the cross-reference from the cards of Gołaszyn (cards 6) and 650).
THE SURNAME WRITTEN ON THE CARD „Jasienskiego” (through „ie”) — I record the standardised form „Jasiński” in accordance with the rule (Jasiński and Jasieński are one surname). The same person stands in this village under T90, T89 and O83, where the card writes „Jasińskiego / Jasinskiego”.

T9018 hearthsT90. – Baltazara Jasińskiego pisarza ziemi i grodskiego czerskiego — dymów 18card 1)
The figure 18 stands in the second line, on the right, underlined twice. In the first line a horizontal stroke runs through the word „grodskiego” [reading uncertain whether it is a striking out or an extended flourish of the pen] — the sense of the phrase is the same in either case and T₀89 on card 2) confirms it („pisarza ziem. i grodz. czerskiego”), and therefore I do not mark the word as struck out in the text of the extract. ¶ This is the same person to whom the cards of Gołaszyn refer (cards 6) and 650): „części Baltazara Jasińskiego, pisarza ziemskiego i grodzk. czerskiego — zob. Ławki”.

The card writes the surname „Jasińskiego”; the form standardised to „Jasiński” in accordance with the rule (Jasiński = Jasieński). The office is set out on this card most fully of all four extracts: „pisarza ziemi i grodskiego czerskiego”.

A description of the village, not a list of hearths — hence the hearths figure empty. The number in brackets I read as the Roman „IX” (with a stroke above), as with the other villages of the card index. ¶ THE NAME OF THE RIVER [READING UNCERTAIN]: after „młynek na rz.” stand two words; the second I read with certainty as „Krzna”, the first — written with a capital letter, with a crossbar above the middle — as „Mała”. Checked with one three-and-a-half-fold magnification; the shape of the first letter remains ambiguous („M” or „K”), so I do not hold the reading to be settled. ¶ THIS EXTRACT NAMES NEITHER INNS NOR PROPINATION — it names only the little mill; the inns stand in T89, the propination in T₀89.

The card writes the surname „Jasinskiego”; the form standardised to „Jasiński” in accordance with the rule (Jasiński = Jasieński). The office is here shortened to „pisarza czerskiego”.

In the field the surname I give the headword form „Jasiński” (the rule for merging Jasiński/Jasieński). THE CROSS-REFERENCE „zob. Dziewule.” stands in the same line: the card index does not set out here the holding of Ksawery Jasieński at Okniny, only under the village of DZIEWULE (there T₀89 on card 6) names Okniny among eight villages, and T90 and T94 count it in the 40 hearths of Franciszek Ksawery Jasiński). The hearths are thus entered under another village and I do not duplicate them here; with the siglum T₀89 the hearths figure in any case always remains empty.

T754 hearths6) cz. Jasinskiego – dymów 4card 1)
THIS ENTRY IS THE KEY TO THE RECKONING WITH ŁAWKI. Four hearths of Jasiński's holding in Zalesie in 1775; in 1794 the register T94 counts five of them. The same holdings enter into the thirty-two hearths at which the card of Ławki (f. 670) reckons in T89 the estate of Baltazar Jasiński „z częściami na wsiach Gołaszynie i Zalesiu”, and into the grange which the T₀89 of Ławki describes by the same formula. IN SUMMING UP, THESE HEARTHS MUST NOT BE COUNTED TWICE — either one counts the 32 hearths of the Ławki estate complex as a whole, or Ławki separately (18 hearths according to T90 and T94) and Jasiński's holdings in Zalesie and Gołaszyn separately. ¶ In the surviving part of the T90 of Zalesie (card 3) Jasiński DOES NOT APPEAR — his entry stood in all probability on the lost card 4.
THE CARD GIVES NO FORENAME — there stands only „cz. Jasinskiego”, without a forename and without an office, so the field the given name remains empty (this is not a form derived from a husband's name, but simply the absence of a forename). The card writes „Jasinskiego”, without the diacritic; I record the unified form „Jasiński” in accordance with the rule (Jasiński = Jasieński). ¶ That BALTAZAR Jasiński is meant, land and castle scribe of Czersk (pisarz ziemski i grodzki czerski), is attested by the register of 1794 on card 5) („4) cz. Baltazara Jasińskiego – 5 dymów”) and by the cards of Ławki (card 1), T89 and T₀89: „z częściami na wsiach Gołaszynie i Zalesiu”) — but THE REGISTER OF 1775 DOES NOT SAY SO, and I do not add the forename in its stead.

A CROSS-REFERENCE, NOT A SEPARATE LIST. „zob. I NOTE THIS OPENLY, SO THAT THE HEARTHS ARE NOT COUNTED TWICE: the 32 hearths of Ławki INCLUDE Jasiński's Zalesie holding, and so in summing up Zalesie they must not be added in. In agreement with this is the fact that the T89 of Zalesie (cards 6)–752) has no entry for Jasiński at all and closes with the note „Razem 42 dymów. zob. Ławki”. Separate from it stands T94 (card 5), entry 4), which counts the same holding in Zalesie as 5 hearths — that is another year and another treatment, not a duplicate.

THE SURNAME ON THE CARD IS „Jasińskiego” (T94) / „Jasieńskiego” (T₀89) — I record the unified form „Jasiński” in accordance with the rule (Jasiński = Jasieński).

A CAUTION WHEN MERGING — THE RISK OF DOUBLE COUNTING. This is the same Baltazar Jasiński, land and castle scribe of Czersk (pisarz ziemski i grodzki czerski), whom T89 of 1789 reckons together at the village of ŁAWKI (card 1): „Baltazara Jasińskiego pisarza ziemi czerskiey Z CZĘŚCIAMI NA WSIACH GOŁASZYNIE I ZALESIU … = 32 d.”. These 5 hearths of the register of 1794 are his Zalesie holding counted SEPARATELY, within Zalesie, and they enter into the total „Razem – 46 dymów” of this card. It must not be added to the 32 hearths of Ławki — that would be to count the same substance twice. The card index itself separates these two treatments expressly: the T89 of Zalesie (cards 6)–752) HAS no entry for Jasiński and closes with the note „Razem 42 dymów. zob. Ławki”, while the T₀89 of Zalesie (card 8) gives him entry 1) with the cross-reference „zob. Ławki” and without any figure.

THE SURNAME ON THE CARD IS „Jasińskiego” (T94) / „Jasieńskiego” (T₀89) — I record the unified form „Jasiński” in accordance with the rule (Jasiński = Jasieński).
