Hearth Tax Registers of the Łuków Land 1775–1794

Stok Wiśniewski

In the card index under the name Stok Wiszniewski. Parish of Zbuczyn, łukowski county.

Dear reader, remember that this is an AI study, that it may contain errors; treat it as indicative and verify it for yourself.

Extracts from outside the registers

Records under sigla which the card index does not expand. They give no hearths, so they enter no total.

MPcard 1)MP - Stok Wiśniowski - do starostwa [skreślone: kąkolewnickiego] wiśniowskiego;
note: A one-line note of appurtenance, without hearths and without persons — the same type of record as „MP - Ciosna - do starostwa wiszniowskiego” (card 1), „MP - Myrcha v. Myrsze - do starostwa wiśniowskiego” (card), „MP. - Karcze - do starostwa zbuczyńskiego” (card 1) and „MP - Ruska wola - do starostwa kąkolewnickiego” (card 2). The siglum is known to the card index from a dozen or so other cards, there is no expansion and I add none. Here without a full stop after the siglum („MP-”). It does not enter the reckoning of hearths, in keeping with the practice of the village files so far. ¶ THE LINE IS CORRECTED: after the words „do starostwa” stands a word scored over with a dense, repeated pull of the pen, and ABOVE it, in the same black ink and with the same pen, „wiśniowskiego;” has been added. The addition stands exactly above the struck-out word, across its width, so I read it as a correction, not as a separate mention. ¶ THE STRUCK-OUT WORD I READ AS „kąkolewnickiego” [READING UNCERTAIN — read from under the deletion]. In favour of this reading: the beginning „ką-” (the tail under the second letter is visible), the ending „-ckiego” and the length of the word, which agrees to a single letter. Against: the middle of the word is covered by three horizontal pulls and single letters in it cannot be told apart. If the reading is right, then the editor of the card index first assigned Stok to the starosty of Kąkolewnica — the same beside which Ruska Wola, Brzozowica, Dębowierzchy and Lipniaki stand in this card index — and then corrected it to that of Wiśniów. A matter to be resolved by the owner. ¶ The name of the village in this line: „Stok Wiśniowski” (with „ś”, without a descender), as in the S87 and the O83 of the same card, and otherwise than in the heading („Stok Wiszniewski”). The added adjective of the starosty likewise has „ś”: above the word three dots are visible and not a single letter descending below the line of writing.
Ls.89card 2)Ls.89. ws. Stok, do star. wiszniewskiego.- | grunta średnie, nadto wydmy i piaski | łąki grondowe i błotne, las do opału | i g[…]dry, chrósty brzozowe i olszowe,
note: An extract under a siglum outside the list of sources, without a single figure of hearths, without a single establishment and without a single person — it does not enter the reckoning of hearths. Four lines; the breaks of the lines I mark with a vertical stroke in the text of the extract. The siglum is written „Ls.89.”, with a full stop after the „s” and after the „89” (on cards 2), 361 and 420 „Ls.89”, on card 2) „Ls89.”, on card 2) „Ls. 89”, on card 3) „Ls.79”). ¶ THE ABBREVIATION FOR THE VILLAGE [READING UNCERTAIN AS TO ONE LETTER]: after the „w” stands a short pull descending below the line of writing, after it a full stop. I read „ws.”; taken by itself it could also be read „w.” (as on cards 3), 211, 222 and 361) or „wś.” (as on card 2) and as in the St.89 one line lower on the same card, where the abbreviation is beyond doubt). The sense is the same. ¶ THE NAME OF THE STAROSTY [READING UNCERTAIN AS TO THE SPELLING]: I read „wiszniewskiego”. For „sz”: after „wi” stands a letter descending plainly below the line of writing, that is a „z”, and not the diacritical dot which this hand sets over the „ś” in the word „wiśniowskie” on card 1). For „-ewskiego”: the vowel before „-skiego” has the shape of a closed loop with a crossbar, that is an „e”, and not of an oval without a crossbar. Against: the minims in the middle of the word are fewer than a full „-szni-” requires, and under tenfold magnification they can also be read as „-śni-”, that is „wiśniewskiego”. I do not decide between these two spellings; in both cases the same starosty (leasehold) is meant, which the St.89 one line lower writes without any doubt „wiszniowskiego”, and T90 on card 1) — „Wiśniów.”. ¶ „wydmy” — A READING SETTLED BY COMPARING THE LETTERS: the second and the fifth letter of the word have an identical shape (a loop descending below the line of writing), so both are the same character, and since the last of them is closed by the ending of the plural, it is a „y”; before it stand three arcs, that is an „m”. Hence w-y-d-m-y. The word checked under elevenfold magnification and after local binarisation. ¶ AN UNREAD WORD in the fourth line, between „las do opału i” and „chrósty brzozowe i olszowe”: six or seven characters, the first a „g” with a loop below the line of writing, the fifth with a tall stem („d” or „b”), the last but one with a shoulder („r”), the last a „y”; above the third or fourth character a small oblique acute. Roughly „gr…dry”/„grudry”. Checked under fourteenfold magnification, in three different adjustments of the contrast and after local binarisation — no sensible Polish word comes of it and I DO NOT GUESS it. I report it. ¶ The form „grondowe” (not „grądowe”) as with Ciosna and Myrcha; „chrósty” with an acute over the „o”, as with Baranek and Kąkolewnica. The name of the village in this extract is shortened to „Stok” alone, with a comma after it.
St.89card 2)St89 - wś Stok - do star. wiszniowskiego 69 l. (38 m., 31 k.); | w tym gosp. (12 m., 12 k., 20 syn. do l. 15; 1 syn od l. 15; 15 cór.) | luźni 2 m.; żebraki (3 m., 4 k.); | 3 l. żyd. (2 m., 1 k.); = szynkarz;
note: An extract under a siglum outside the list of sources — a census of the population from 1789, without a single figure of hearths and without a single person named by forename; it does not enter the reckoning of hearths, just as the St.89 with Karcze (card 2) and Myrcha (card 2). Four lines; the breaks I mark with a vertical stroke in the text of the extract. ¶ THE CARD'S RECKONING CLOSES TO A SINGLE PERSON and thereby confirms the reading of the figures: householders 12 m. + 12 f. + 20 sons under 15 + 1 son over 15 + 15 daughters = 60, the landless 2 m. = 2, beggars 3 m. + 4 f. = 7; 60 + 2 + 7 = 69, and the card itself gives „69 l.” and breaks it down into „38 m., 31 k.” (38 + 31 = 69). The Jewish population is counted separately: „3 l. żyd. (2 m., 1 k.)”, 2 + 1 = 3. ¶ THE FIGURE „20” BESIDE THE SONS WAS CHECKED SEPARATELY, because only with it does the reckoning close: with the reading „2 syn.” the sum would give 51, not 69. Under threefold magnification two characters are visible, „2” and „0”, written without a space, and after them the abbreviation „syn.”. ¶ THE NAME OF THE STAROSTY IN THIS LINE IS UNAMBIGUOUS: „wiszniowskiego” — a separate „s” and a separate „z” with a descender below the line of writing, and before „-skiego” the oval of an „o”. It is the cleanest writing of this name on the two cards and differs both from the „wiśniowskie” of card 1) and from the „wiszniewskiego” of the Ls.89 one line above. The forms I do not unify. ¶ SZYNKARZ: the word read letter by letter (s-z-y-n-k-a-r-z), preceded by the sign „=”, closed with a semicolon; it stands after the figure of the Jewish population and characterises it. It is the only witness in this village to who kept the inn named in T89 on card 1) — but the card says NEITHER „propinacja”, NOR „karczma”, nor does it give a forename; I infer nothing from it beyond what stands there. ¶ The abbreviation for the village is here beyond doubt: „wś” with a diacritical stroke over the „s”, without a full stop. ¶ THE FIGURE OF THE POPULATION FROM THIS EXTRACT (69 + 3 = 72 persons in 1789) IS NOT THE SAME AS THE S87 OF CARD 515 (64 people + 4 Jews = 68 persons in 1787). These are two sources and two years; I do not merge them and do not smooth over the difference.

Without an extract for 1775 and 1794 — no card of this village carries that tariff. It is a missing extract in the card index, not a gap in the numbering of the cards.
