Hearth Tax Registers of the Łuków Land 1775–1794
Łuków
In the card index under the name Łuków (miasto). Parish of Łuków, łukowski county.
Dear reader, remember that this is an AI study, that it may contain errors; treat it as indicative and verify it for yourself.
Town or village — what the card index says
The card index calls Łuków a TOWN outright: „Łuków, a town” [V48], „a castle-district and land-court town” [O83], „MP – a town – seat of the Łuków starosty”. The revision of 1792 lists a town hall. It is the only settlement in this collection called a town rather than a small town.
Incorporated: Wójtostwo Łukowskie. The Łuków wójtostwo was not a separate settlement but a unit of tenure beside the town — the bailiwick of the starosty, which the register counts as an entry of its own. It lay within Łuków and was formally incorporated into it in 1954. Its extracts therefore stand here, and their hearths go into the town’s total.
Offices: Dłuski (starost of Zwoleń (starosta zwoliński); Dłuski Sebastian (starost of Łuków (starosta łukowski); Szaniawski Konstanty (bishop of Kraków (biskup krakowski)
More than five hearths in one hand: Dłuski Sebastian (115); Dłuski (9)
Extracts from outside the registers
Records under sigla which the card index does not expand. They give no hearths, so they enter no total.
note: The siglum „MP” from outside the list of sources — it does not enter the reckoning of hearths, just as at Zbuczyn (card 2): „MP – miasteczko - siedziba starostwa;”) and Trzebieszów (card ad1): „MP - miasteczko - siedziba dzierżawy;”). The reading is certain, the line short and clean. THE SIGNIFICANCE: this is the only place in the card index of Łuków where the settlement is called outright a TOWN (miasto) — and not a „miasteczko”, a little town, as Zbuczyn and Trzebieszów are — and at the same time the SEAT OF A STAROSTY. This agrees with „Łuków, miasto” from my V48 on card 6, with „miasto grodowe i ziemskie”, a castle and land town, from O83 on the same card 6, and with the „ratuszem miejskim”, the town hall, which the revision of 1792 names on card 11. The gradation „miasto” / „miasteczko” is consistent in this card index and worth recording: Łuków is the only „miasto”.
note: The siglum „St.89” from outside the list of sources — it does not enter the reckoning of hearths, just as at Zbuczyn (card 3) and Rowce. The extract gives no hearths (the hearths figure null) and is not a statistic of the population, like the St.89 of Zbuczyn, but a note on the COMPOSITION OF THE STAROSTY: to the starosty of Łuków belong, besides the town, the village of Sienciaszka, Poważe and the wójtostwo of Łuków. THE READING OF THE NAME „Sienciaszka”: so it stands on this card, with an „n” after „Sie-”; on card 1, in T90, the same village is written „Sieciaszka”, without the „n”. The two forms I do NOT unify — I record the one which stands here, and I note the difference. THE POSSESSOR: Sebastyan Dłuski, castle starost of Łuków („star. grod. Łukow.”) — the forename and the surname legible, the ending of the surname („-iego”) being on the card heavily corrected and overwritten, „Dłusk-” itself certain. It is the same person whom T90 on card 1 calls „Sebastjana Dłuskiego starosty łukowskiego”, and O83 on card 6 „Sebastyana Dłuskiego, starosty łukowskiego”; here there is added the designation GRODOWY, of the castle, which those extracts do not have. I do not merge the years — I record the person as this extract names him. The surname „Dłuski” is attested in this neighbourhood; the form „Otuski”, which the first impression from the cut of the letters suggests, I confirm on none of the three cards.
note: The siglum „Ls” from outside the list of sources — it does not enter the reckoning of hearths (the same was done at Kot Wiśniowski, Baranek and Trzebieszów). The extract gives neither hearths nor any person: the hearths figure null, the list of persons empty, I add no one. UNCERTAIN READINGS, set out one by one: (1) THE NAME OF THE VILLAGE in point 2) — „Łobzawem” IS NO MORE THAN AN ATTEMPT AT A READING; the name I have not established. I examined this word under fivefold magnification, in the native resolution of strip b (so as to avoid the seam between the frames, which passes through the ending of the word). Certain are: a capital letter with a loop and a crossbar (that is „Ł”, as in „Łuków” and „Lasy” of the same hand), then a closed „o”, then a letter with a tall loop (b / l / ł / k / h), then a letter descending below the line with a hook (z / g / y / p), then an „a” or an „o”, and a distinct „-wem”. This record corresponds to no village of the starosty of Łuków named in T90 on card 1 (Sieciaszka, Zdżary, Poważe, Krynka). I DO NOT STRETCH it to any known name — I report it to the owner for resolution. (2) „na browarkę” — the last word ends in a loop descending below the line; I read „browarkę”, but „browarki” or „browarnię” are equally possible [reading uncertain]. The sense: pine fit for the needs of a brewery; the brewery itself the extract neither locates nor counts. I record the word separately, because in the town there are many breweries. (3) „krzakowata” — the reading certain as to the letters (k-r-z-a-k-o-w-a-t-a), checked under magnification; the sentence means that in the town scrub the young pine is bushy, that is, unfit for building timber. The turn of phrase agrees with the vocabulary of the lustration from Trzebieszów (card 3): „choina młode jeszcze na drzewo do budowli niezdatna”). (4) „(sosna młode, dąb)” — so it stands, with a disagreement of gender; I do not correct it. (5) „⟨dł. 1½ mili⟩” — an addition superscribed above the line, in brackets, referring to the forest of point 2). The name of the forest „Zapowiednik” is UNDERLINED on the card and set in quotation marks; the same name returns in the lustration of Trzebieszów (card 3), which confirms the reading. THE LAST SENTENCE — „miasto z powodu pożarów kilku podupadłe”, the town fallen into decay on account of several fires — does not speak of the forests, but of the state of the town; the author of the card index added it below the enumeration of the forests, in the same extract and in the same hand. It is the only testimony in my extracts to the decline of Łuków and a matter worth the owner's attention.
note: The siglum „Rew. m. Łuk. 92” is from outside the list of the eight sources (S87, V48, T75, T90, O83, T89, T94, T089) — it does not enter the reckoning of hearths; for that reason this card is not in the reckoning of hearths at all. On the card the siglum runs more fully: „Rew. m. Łukowa 92”. The extract gives no hearths (the hearths figure null) and no person whatever (the list of persons empty) — it is a topographical description of the town. UNCERTAIN READINGS: (1) „piarów” — so it stands (p-i-a-r-ó-w, with an accent over the „o”), and NOT „pijarów”; in V48 on card 6 the same hand writes „XX. Pijarów”, and so the difference of spelling is in the card index itself. I do not stretch a decision, I record the form from this card [reading uncertain between „piarów” and „pijarów”]. (2) „czyli rzeką” — the word after „za mostem” I read „czyli”; the letters c-z-y-l-i are legible, but the sense („za mostem czyli rzeką”, beyond the bridge, that is the river) is singular, and so I record it. (3) the last, broken-off line at the lower edge — NOT READ. A DISCREPANCY IN THE NAMES OF THE ORDER, which I do not smooth away: the revision of 1792 calls the monastery in Radzyńska Street a BERNARDINE one („kościół Bernardynów”), just as O83 on card 6 does, whereas V48 on that same card 6 writes „Klasztor Franciszkanów”. The Bernardines are the Observant branch of the Franciscans, and so these may be two names for one house, but the card index does not resolve it. THE TOPOGRAPHY from this card (the names of the streets literally): ulica Lubelska (beside it the parish church and, in the field, the chapel of St Leonard), ulica Radzyńska (at its end, beyond the bridge/river, the church of the Bernardines), ulica Nowa miejska (beyond the ditch, beside it the little church of the Holy Spirit). BREWERY, INN, PROPINATION, AUSTERIA, DISTILLERY: on this card NOT ONE of these words OCCURS. THE ENDOWMENT: the little church of the Holy Spirit is „funduszu miejskiego”, that is on the upkeep of the town — the only mention of property on this card.
note: The siglum „Rew. m. Łuk. 92” from outside the list — it does not enter the reckoning of hearths. The extract gives no hearths in the sense of the registers, but HOUSES (the hearths figure null; the figures of the houses I leave in the text of the extract and here), and it names not a single person (the list of persons empty) — the owners it gives solely collectively, by estates: „mieszczan”, „żydów”, „szlachty”. THE CARD'S RECKONING CLOSES TWICE: (1) the market square — 29 houses = 14 of the townsmen + 15 of the Jews; (2) ul. Warszawska — 17 wooden houses = 8 of the nobility + 9 of the townsmen. Both totals checked on the card and agreeing to the single house. Ul. Lubelska: 5 wooden houses of the townsmen, without a breakdown. Together from this card: 29 + 5 + 17 = 51 houses, and besides them 3 plots in the market square, 2 plots of the townsmen in ul. Warszawska, a burnt plot entered to the church (ul. Lubelska) and a plot confiscated from the townsmen called „Oleszczyzna” (ul. Warszawska). THE NAMES LITERALLY: „rynek”, „ul. Lubelska”, „ul. Warszawska”, „Nowe Miasto”, „droga węgrowska”, the plot „Oleszczyzna”. PUBLIC BUILDINGS: the wooden town hall of the town (in the market square); the vicarage to the parish church and the parish hospital (ul. Lubelska); the brick Piarist church, fenced at the side with timber, in Nowe Miasto above the Węgrów road (the completion of the sentence from card 10 — „z frontu z filarami murowanymi”). BREWERY, INN, PROPINATION, AUSTERIA, DISTILLERY: on this card NOT ONE of these words OCCURS — although the market square and three streets are spoken of. UNCERTAIN READINGS: (1) „ciągnąca się do mostu rzeki” — the word „mostu” legible (m-o-s-t-u, the „t” crossed), the line breaks after it and the next begins „rzeki”; the combination „do mostu rzeki” I leave as it stands [reading uncertain as to the punctuation, not as to the letters]. (2) „4 mur.” — an abbreviation of „murowane”, of brick. (3) „Oleszczyzna” — the name of a plot, the capital letter and the ending „-yzna” certain. THE CONFISCATED PLOT: „plac skonfiskowany od mieszczan zwany Oleszczyzna” — a record of the confiscation of the property of the townsmen, a matter worth the owner's attention; the card index does not say who confiscated it.
note: The siglum „Rew. m. Łuk. 92” from outside the list — it does not enter the reckoning of hearths. Without hearths and without a single person; the owners solely by estates („mieszczan”, „szlachty”, „żyd.”, „duch.”). THE CARD'S RECKONINGS CLOSE THREE TIMES: (1) ul. Nowo-Miejska — 15 wooden houses = 2 of the clergy + 10 of the townsmen + 3 of the nobility; (2) ul. Węgrowska — 6 wooden houses = 4 houses of the townsmen + 2 of the nobility (besides them 1 brick house, counted separately); (3) ul. Kozia — 24 wooden houses = 4 houses of the nobility + 12 houses of the townsmen + 8 houses of the Jews. All three checked on the card and agreeing to the single house. From this card together: 15 + 6 + 1 of brick + 24 = 46 houses, and besides them two plots (one each in ul. Nowo-Miejska and in ul. Kozia). THE NAMES LITERALLY: „ul. Nowo-Miejska”, „ulica Węgrowska”, the street „zwana Kozia”, „rynek Kozi” (on the card in the genitive: „do rynku Koziego”), „rów”, the ditch (from it two streets begin), „ul. Warszawska”. NAMED BUILDINGS: the presbytery of the Holy Spirit (one of the two houses of the clergy in ul. Nowo-Miejska) and the only brick house on this card, in ul. Węgrowska, „gdzie konwikt”. THE READING OF „KONWIKT”: the word written with a sweep, I read k-o-n-w-i-k-t (the last letter with a distinct crossbar) [reading uncertain — I considered „kominki”/„komniki” as well, but neither the one nor the other gives a sense, whereas „konwikt”, that is a school boarding house, agrees with the Piarist college which V48 on card 6 describes with the words „klasztor XX. Pijarów (blisko 400 uczniów)”, and with the position of the Piarist church „na Nowym Mieście nad drogą węgrowską” from card 11]. BREWERY, INN, PROPINATION, AUSTERIA, DISTILLERY: on this card NOT ONE of these words OCCURS. OTHER UNCERTAIN READINGS: (1) „i /2 duch.” — between „drew.” and „2 duch.” stands the letter „i” with a comma and a long oblique stroke; the oblique serves in this card index for a bracket (likewise „/4 d. szlach. … /” lower down), and so I read it as the opening of an enumeration, but I leave the record literal. (2) „z prawą ul. Warszawskiej” — so it stands, with a disagreement of cases; I do not correct it. (3) the last word of the card I read „plac”; over the final letter stands a small mark which might be an accent — I do not resolve it.
note: The siglum „Rew. m. Łuk. 92” is from outside the list of the eight sources (S87, V48, T75, T90, O83, T89, T94, T089) — it does not enter the reckoning of hearths; for that reason this card is not in the reckoning of hearths at all. Without hearths in the sense of the registers (the hearths figure null — the card counts HOUSES) and without a single person (the list of persons empty): the owners it gives solely by estates („żyd.”, „żydowskie”). THE NAMES LITERALLY: „ulica w środku Brzeska”, the street „zwana Kościelna”, the street „zwana Trzebieska”; the points of orientation: „wał”, the rampart (from it ul. Kościelna begins, to it ul. Brzeska runs up), „rynek”, the market square (from the left-hand side of the market square ul. Trzebieska leads out), „łaźnia żydowska”, the Jewish bath-house, „bożnica”, the synagogue. THE FIGURES OF THE HOUSES, literally and faithfully: ul. Brzeska — 15 dom. drew. żyd., 5 plots; ul. Kościelna — 15 dom. drew., 1 plot, all of them /domy żydowskie/; ul. Trzebieska — 17 dom. drew. + 1 dom mur. /wszystkie żydowskie/ and 7 plots, „na których bd. były domy, ale pogorzały”. THE RECKONING: the card DOES NOT GIVE here either a total of the section or a total of the whole — there is no „razem” whatever on this card, and so there is nothing to check by reckoning; from the entries there come 15 + 15 + 17 + 1 of brick = 48 houses and 5 + 1 + 7 = 13 plots (a total of my own, NOT from the card). Neither does the card break the houses of ul. Brzeska and ul. Kościelna down by estates, and so the internal control reckonings which were on cards 11 and 12 are here wanting. NAMED BUILDINGS: „szkoła drew.” and „łaźnia drew.” in ul. Trzebieska (both Jewish, in the neighbourhood of the synagogue) and the only brick house on this card, in ul. Trzebieska. THIS WHOLE CARD IS THE JEWISH QUARTER OF ŁUKÓW — in all three streets the houses are indicated as Jewish. BREWERY, INN, PROPINATION, AUSTERIA, DISTILLERY: on this card NOT ONE of these words OCCURS. UNCERTAIN READINGS: (1) „ku łaźni żydowskiej” — the word after „ku” has in this hand a shape close to „tarui/tamie”; the comparison with the last line of the same card decides it, where the same sequence of letters stands as an obvious word: „i łaźnia drew.”. I read therefore „łaźni” [reading uncertain, but supported by a comparison within the card]. (2) „z prawą stroną” — so I read the words after „od wału”; „z prawej strony” is possible as well (so the analogous turn of phrase runs on card 11: „z prawej strony rynku”), and on card 12 the same hand writes just as clumsily „z prawą ul. Warszawskiej” [reading uncertain as to the endings, not as to the sense]. (3) „aż do wału” / „od wału” — the same word in both places; I read „wał”, which card 14 confirms, where „ulica nadwalna” and „od wału aż w pole” stand. (4) „17 dom.” in ul. Trzebieska — the second figure has a distinct upper crossbar and an oblique, that is a 7 and not a 1; settled by magnification. (5) „bd.” in the turn of phrase „na których bd. były domy” — the abbreviation I transcribe literally, I do not expand it. (6) „ciągnąca się” breaks on the card into „ciągną=/ca się”; I join it without marking the break.
note: The siglum „Rew. m. Łuk. 92” from outside the list — it does not enter the reckoning of hearths. Without hearths (the hearths figure null — the card counts HOUSES) and without a single person (the list of persons empty); the owners solely by estates („miesz.”/„mieszcz.”, „żyd.”). THE CARD'S RECKONING CLOSES ONCE: ul. Podzamcze — 22 wooden houses = 11 houses of the townsmen + 11 of the Jews; checked by reckoning and agreeing to the single house. The remaining three streets are given without a breakdown by estates, and so there is nothing there to check. THE CARD GIVES NEITHER A TOTAL OF THE SECTION NOR A TOTAL OF THE WHOLE. From the entries of this card there come 22 + 6 + 8 + 13 = 49 houses (a total of my own, NOT from the card), all of them wooden — not a single brick house. THE NAMES LITERALLY: „ulica nadwalna”, called „Podzamcze”; the street „tylna nazwana Browarna”; „ulica wójtowska”; „ulica wójtostwo dworskie szlacheczyzna czyli królewszczyzna”. The points of orientation: „rów”, the ditch (above it runs the ulica nadwalna), „zamek”, the castle (the ulica Podzamcze goes „z zamkiem”), „most rzeki”, the bridge of the river (from it the ulica Browarna), „wał” and „pole”, the rampart and the field (from the rampart out into the field runs the ulica wójtowska). A WORD FROM THE CONTROL TRIAD — „BROWAR”: on this card it DOES OCCUR, and that in the name of a street: „ulica od mostu rzeki tylna nazwana BROWARNA” (6 wooden houses of the Jews). The reading is CERTAIN, confirmed by magnification: a capital B, then -r-o-w-a-r-n-a. The name is an adjective from „browar” and indicates that by the river, beyond the bridge, the town breweries stood — but the word „browar” itself, and the number of the breweries, the revision in this place DOES NOT GIVE; I therefore add no building, I record only the name of the street as it stands. INN, PROPINATION, AUSTERIA, DISTILLERY: on this card NOT ONE of these words OCCURS. UNCERTAIN READINGS: (1) „szlacheczyzna” — the word after „wójtostwo dworskie”, before „czyli królewszczyzna”; the letters sweeping, I read s-z-l-a-c-h-e-c-z-y-z-n-a [reading uncertain]. The combination „szlacheczyzna czyli królewszczyzna” is internally contradictory in the common understanding, but in a royal town a wójtostwo could be a royal holding in noble hands, and so the sense holds; I do not stretch a decision. I considered as well the reading „Oleszczyzna” (the name of the plot from card 11), but the shape of the word does not point to it. (2) „11 d. miesz.” — an abbreviation of „mieszczan”, written more briefly than „mieszcz.” in the line about the ulica wójtowska; the reckoning 11 + 11 = 22 confirms both figures. (3) „ponad rowem” — so it stands; the same „rów” as on card 12 („ul. Nowo-Miejska od rowu”). (4) „Podzamcze” breaks on the card into „Pod=/zamcze”; I join it. (5) „wójtostwo dworskie” — the reading „wójtowstwo” is possible as well; I record the form which I see.
note: The siglum „Rew. m. Łuk. 92” from outside the list — it does not enter the reckoning of hearths. Without hearths (the hearths figure null — the card counts HOUSES) and without a single person (the list of persons empty); the holders are given by estates and institutions („duch.”, „mieszcz.”, „szlach.”, „dworskie”, „żydzi”). THE NAMES LITERALLY: „jurydyka piarska”, the Piarist jurydyka (a jurisdiction separate from the town's own), „ul. Gumienna” (on the card in the genitive: „z ul. Gumiennej”), „jurydyka starościńska nazwana Ciężkowizna”, the starost's jurydyka, „Drogoszewszczyzna”, „jurydyka w ul. Radzyńskiej szlachecka”, the noble jurydyka in ul. Radzyńska; the point of orientation: „most rzeki”, the bridge of the river (on the left-hand side beyond it lies Ciężkowizna). THE FIGURES OF THE HOUSES: the Piarist jurydyka — 3 wooden houses of the clergy; Ciężkowizna — 4 wooden houses of the townsmen and, separately, 3 wooden inns of the manor; the jurydyka in ul. Radzyńska — 11 wooden houses of the nobility. THE CARD GIVES NEITHER A TOTAL OF THE SECTION NOR OF THE WHOLE; from the entries there come 3 + 4 + 11 = 18 houses and over and above them 3 inns (a total of my own, NOT from the card). The reckoning is confirmed, however, by the final total of the revision on card 15: the „17 duch.” there agrees to the one with the 2 houses of the clergy from card 12 + 3 from this card + 12 from card 15, and the „4 karcz.” there — with the 3 inns of this card + 1 inn from card 15. THE WORDS FROM THE CONTROL TRIAD: „KARCZMA” — it DOES OCCUR, the reading CERTAIN, confirmed by magnification: „3 karcz. drew. dworskie w nich żydzi” at the starost's jurydyka of Ciężkowizna. These are inns OF THE MANOR (of the starost), held by Jews. „BROWAR” — it DOES OCCUR, but the reading IS NOT CERTAIN: the sentence „jedna z browarem nazwana Drogoszewszczyzna” — the word after „jedna z” I read „browarem” (b-ro-w-a-r-e-m; under a 4× magnification the sequence „ro” runs together into a single oval, and the „w” looks like a narrow „v”, so that at first glance the word looks like „haverem”). For the reading „browarem” speaks the sense: one of the three inns of the manor had a brewery. Not having certainty, I mark it [reading uncertain] and report it in the report, in accordance with the rule on the words browar/karczma/propinacja. PROPINATION, AUSTERIA, DISTILLERY: on this card NOT ONE of these words OCCURS. THE REMAINING UNCERTAIN READINGS: (1) „Drogoszewszczyzna” — the name breaks on the card into „Drogoszew=/szczyzna”; the reading „Drogoszowszczyzna” is possible as well [reading uncertain as to the vowel in the part „-szew-”]. (2) „Ciężkowizna” — the reading certain, the letters C-i-ę-ż-k-o-w-i-z-n-a legible under magnification. (3) Strikings out: before „jurydyka” in the line with „VI” and at the beginning of the line about the starost's jurydyka — neither of the struck-out places do I read, and I do not guess them. A MATTER FOR THE OWNER: this card shows that outside the municipal jurisdiction there stood in Łuków three separate jurydyki — the Piarist (of the clergy), the starost's (Ciężkowizna, with inns and a brewery) and the noble one in ul. Radzyńska — together 18 houses and 3 inns.
note: The siglum „Rew. m. Łuk. 92” from outside the list — it does not enter the reckoning of hearths. Without hearths (the hearths figure null — the card counts HOUSES) and without a single person named by forename (the list of persons empty); the only mention of a man is collective and nameless: „w niej żyd szynkarz”. THE WORDS FROM THE CONTROL TRIAD: „KARCZMA” — it DOES OCCUR, the reading CERTAIN, confirmed by magnification: „karcz. duch. w niej żyd szynkarz” — an inn OF THE CLERGY at the clerical jurydyka beyond the bridge, with a Jewish tapster; and over and above that, in the final total of the revision stands „4 karcz.”. PROPINATION, BREWERY, AUSTERIA, DISTILLERY: on this card NOT ONE of these words OCCURS (the word „szynkarz” I record, but it does not belong to the control vocabulary). THE TOTAL OF THE WHOLE, literally from the card: „Razem 222 domów. w tym 6 mur. /95 dom mieszczan. 81 żyd, 23 szlach. 17 duch. 4 karcz. 1 konwikt/ = 222 domów”. THE RECKONING CHECKED — AND IT DOES NOT COME OUT: 95 + 81 + 23 + 17 + 4 + 1 = 221, while the card in both places writes 222. THE DIFFERENCE OF ONE HOUSE IS IN THE CARD ITSELF, not in the reading: all six components I checked under a separate magnification (95, 81, 23, 17, 4, 1 — every figure legible), and the „222” itself is in the second record underlined twice and written cleanly; in the first record („Razem 222”) the last figure is corrected, which looks like the trace of that very correction. I do not stretch either side and I do not correct the total. A CROSS-CHECK WITH THE ENTRIES OF THE STREETS (cards 11–14 and 14-bis): three components of the total agree TO THE ONE: the „6 mur.” = 4 of brick in the market square (card 11) + 1 in ul. Węgrowska, where the konwikt is (card 12) + 1 in ul. Trzebieska (card 13); the „17 duch.” = 2 in ul. Nowo-Miejska (card 12) + 3 of the Piarist jurydyka (card 14-bis) + 12 from this card; the „4 karcz.” = 3 at Ciężkowizna (card 14-bis) + 1 from this card; the „1 konwikt” = the brick house in ul. Węgrowska (card 12). These four agreements confirm the reading of the streets. THE THREE REMAINING COMPONENTS, HOWEVER, PART COMPANY with the sum of the entries of the streets: from cards 11–15 there come 90 houses of the townsmen (the card: 95), 88 of the Jews (the card: 81) and 28 of the nobility (the card: 23), and of all the houses 224 besides the 4 inns, that is 228 with them (the card: 222). The discrepancies I DO NOT SMOOTH AWAY — the readings of the several streets are certain and supported by the reckonings of those cards themselves (29 = 14 + 15, 17 = 8 + 9, 15 = 2 + 10 + 3, 6 = 4 + 2, 24 = 4 + 12 + 8, 22 = 11 + 11), and so this is a discrepancy within the source: the collective total of the revision cannot be reconstructed from its own description street by street. This is a matter for the decision of the owner of the work. MOREOVER: „i 22 placów niezabudowanych”, the number of the empty plots, given separately, outside the total of the houses (from cards 11–13 I have reckoned 3 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 5 + 1 + 7 = 20 plots named at the streets, and so here too the card gives two more than come out from the entries). UNCERTAIN READINGS AND WORDS NOT READ: (1) THE NAME OF THE CLERICAL JURYDYKA OF SECTION VII — the two words between „jurydyka duchow.” and „nazwana”, and the name itself after „nazwana”, are for me NOT READ despite a 5× magnification. The first word has the shape „k?ią/ksią-d-r-a” (I considered „księdza”), the second „o-p/f-i-e-j-s-t-a” (I considered „oficjała” and „ofiarska”), the proper name begins with a capital letter and of it I read only „Pros…”. None of these readings do I record as a reading — in accordance with the rule I prefer a gap to a guess; the words are marked in the text of the extract as not read and reported in the report for a second inspection on the original. (2) The clause after „= 222 domów”: I read „wedle” (w-e-d-l-e, two distinct loops, a „d” and an „l”), then a six-letter word of the shape „ratusz”, then „drew.”, and in the next line, thrown out into the left-hand margin, a five-letter word beginning with a letter with a crossbar („ł” or „f”), of the shape „łaźni”/„formi”. The sense of this clause I have not established, and so neither word do I record as a reading [reading not established]; if the reading „ratusz … łaźnia” were confirmed, it would mean that the town hall and the bath-house stand outside the total of the 222 houses. (3) „95 dom mieszczan” — „dom” is an addition superscribed above „mieszczan”, an abbreviation of „domów”; I record it literally.
forms on the cards: Łuków, M-to: Łuków, M. Łuków, miasto Ł., Łuków., m-to Łuków, Woytostwo Łukowskie, woytowstwo Łukowskie, wóytostwo łukowskie, Wójtostwo

Without an extract for 1794 — no card of this village carries that tariff. It is a missing extract in the card index, not a gap in the numbering of the cards.
Caveats on the years' registers (7)
What the compiler noted beside the entry itself, and what the table above does not show:
- T89 — THE FIRST OF THE TWO PARTS OF T89 FOR ŁUKÓW — the TOWN part, closed on this one card by a total of its own, „Razem: 122 d.”. The second part, under a repeated siglum T89 („T89 - starostwo Łukowskie Dłuskiego dożywotnie”), begins on card 3) and runs through cards 4) and 589 with the additions „c.d. T89”; I have recorded it as a second T89 extract in this file, because it has tables of its own and partial totals of its own, while the card index gives no common total for the two parts. THE RECKONING OF THIS CARD CLOSES TO THE SINGLE HEARTH: a) the town 14 + 7 + 7 + 46 + 15 + 15 + 4 + 7 = 115; b) the parsonage 1; c) the Szaniawski boarding school of the Piarist Fathers 6; in all 115 + 1 + 6 = 122, in agreement with the total given at the foot of the card, „Razem: 122 d.”. This agreement is at the same time proof of the reading of all eight figures of entry a) and settles the correction in entry b) (see the note there). The extract is written in blue ink, in the same hand as the end of T90 standing above.
- T89 — THE SECOND PART OF T89 FOR ŁUKÓW — the STAROSTY AND ECCLESIASTICAL part, written in black ink across three cards: card 3) (the heading, the table of the Piarist chimneys, the beginning of the table of the parish benefice), card 4) („c.d. T89” — the rest of the table of the parish benefice, its total and the wójtostwo, the advocacy estate) and card 5) („c.d. T89” — the population table of the parish benefice). I record it as a separate T89 extract, because the siglum stands repeated on card 3), without the addition „c.d.”, while the town part on card 2) is already closed by a total of its own of 122 d. THIS EXTRACT GIVES NO GENERAL TOTAL — the total from the card is therefore empty. It gives three partial totals and all three close to the unit: (1) the Piarist chimneys 1 + 3 = 4, the card writes „suma - 4.”; (2) the table of the parish benefice 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 7 + 2 + 2 + 1 = 16, the card writes „Razem 16 dymów.”; (3) the wójtostwo 8 + 1 = 9, the card writes „= 9 d.”. Hearths in all in this part: 4 + 16 + 9 = 29 (the figure 29 the card index does not give, it is calculated). Together with the town part (122 d. on card 2) T89 gives 151 for Łuków — but THE CARD INDEX SETS THIS TOTAL NOWHERE and I do not enter it in any field. A DISCREPANCY WHICH I DO NOT SMOOTH OVER: the town part (card 2) counts the parsonage at 1 hearth, while the table of the parish benefice (cards 3)–588) sets out the settlement of the benefice a second time, at 16 hearths; likewise the Piarist college stands once in the town part as „konwikt Szaniawskich XX. Pijarów: 6 d. dworskich”, and once here as „Tabela kominów XX. Piarów Łukowskich w mieście Łukowie: suma - 4”. Whether these figures complete one another or overlap, the card index does not explain, and I do not settle it. THE POPULATION TABLE from card 5) has the hearths figure = empty, because it counts souls, not hearths.
- T₀89 — A LIST OF THE POSSESSORS OF HOLDINGS FROM 1789 — WITHOUT HEARTHS (the hearths figure everywhere empty, the total from the card empty); the card gives no total and can give none, because this is not a register. THE EXTENT: the extract begins NOT on card 17), but already at the foot of card 16) (card 16), below the end of a foreign extract „Rew. m. Łuk. 92”, and runs through cards 17) (17), 603 (18), 604 (19), 606 (20) to 605 (21). MIND THE ORDER OF THE CARDS: the numbers in the headings run 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, but the numbers of the CARDS IN THE CARD INDEX run 601, 602, 603, 604, 606, 605 — cards 21) and 606 lie in the card index in the reverse order. I have set the entries according to the number in the heading, not according to the number of the card in the card index. THE LAYOUT ON THE CARDS: every card is written in TWO COLUMNS („cz. …” on the left and „cz. …” on the right). The card index does not number the entries and does not say whether in the original register one read by columns or by lines; I transcribe by lines (first the left-hand cell, then the right-hand one of the same line) and mark this in the the column field of every entry, so that the layout can be reconstructed. The the entry number numbering is therefore EDITORIAL. Card 21) (card 21) has only the left-hand column — the right half of the card is empty; there the extract ends. THE CLOSE: after the last person come three lines of church benefices without surnames (the parsonage with the lease of the inn, 3 curates, a sacristan and an organist; the hospital benefice of the Holy Spirit; the college of the Piarist Fathers) — just as in the T₀89 of Zbuczyn. THE BRACE „NIE WYSIEWAJĄ 10 KORCY”: THERE IS NONE. I have gone over all six cards of the extract under magnification, both margins and all the spaces between the columns — nowhere is there a brace, nor a vertical inscription, nor the abbreviation „nie wys. 10 kor.”. This is a result, not an oversight: the formula about the sowing qualification concerns village possessors, and here we have the burghers of Łuków. No entry, therefore, receives the annotation „nie wysiewa 10 korcy”. PROPINATION / BREWERY / INN / MILL: in the whole extract ONE such word falls — „arenda karcz.” beside the parsonage (card 21). The word „propinacja” the card index did not write here, so I do not set the `propinacja` marker; of a brewery, a mill and a lay inn this extract knows nothing at all. THE ESTATES: beside almost every burgher stands „sław.” (sławetny, honourable); once „uczciwego” (Jan Ambrozik, card 17) and three times „pracowitego” (the last three entries, card 21). I record them in the the status field. THE AUTHOR'S QUESTION MARKS: on card 20) three entries have before „ssrów” a distinct question mark set there by the hand of the author of the card index — it is his doubt, I transcribe it, I do not settle it.
- T90 — The whole T90 extract for this unit fits into one entry: the card does not break the wójtostwo down into holdings and names no part-holding possessors.
- T90 — The extract runs across TWO cards: it begins on card 1) („1)”) and ends on card 2) („2)”), where above it stands the addition „c.d. T90.-”. It is built in two tiers, just as at Zbuczyn: entry 1) is the heading of the royal estates with the possessor, broken into five sub-entries a)–e) closed by the total „Razem 184 dymów król.”; entry 2) is „dobra duchowne w mieście”, broken into three sub-entries a)–c) closed by the total „Razem 18 dymów duch.”; below both, after a long stroke, the final total „Razem w mieście 202 dymów miejskich.” (the figure doubly underlined). THE RECKONING CLOSES TO THE SINGLE HEARTH ON BOTH TIERS: 1 + 119 + 50 + 8 + 6 = 184, in agreement with the intermediate total; 14 + 1 + 3 = 18, in agreement with the second intermediate total; 184 + 18 = 202, in agreement with the final total. THE QUALIFICATION OF THE HEARTHS: everywhere „dymy miejskie”, town hearths, not once „wiejskie 2giej klasy” — Łuków in this register is a town and nothing but a town. The formula is written out in words beside the first entry of each group („1 dym miejski”, „14 dymów miejskich”), beside the following ones replaced by repetition marks (commas at the top of the line), which I expand in the text of the extract as repetition quotes. BETWEEN ENTRY e) AND THE TOTAL stands the cross-reference „— zob. Wójtostwo. —”: the wójtostwo of Łuków (the advocacy estate), although it belongs to the same starosty, has a card of its own in T90 (card, 9 town hearths) and does NOT enter these 202 hearths. Below the total of 184 one more line is added about the composition of the starosty; I record it beside entry 1e, because that is where it stands on the card.
- O83 — The fullest characterisation of a locality in this unit: THREE cards (cards 6), 591 and 592), some twenty-odd lines in black ink, without totals and without a single figure of hearths. It begins on card 6), below the V48 extract, and runs without the addition „c.d.” through the two following cards — on cards 7) and 592 the siglum „O83 (IX)” is each time repeated afresh, in the left-hand margin. The number in brackets I read as the Roman „IX”, just as at Zbuczyn, Rowce and Tarcze. THE BUILD: the first card (card 6) gives the proper constitutional and ecclesiastical characterisation of the town (a castle town and a town of the Land, its church affiliation, the title of possession, the churches and the monasteries); the two following are already an ENUMERATION OF THE CURIOSITIES AND OBJECTS scattered about the town, separated by semicolons, without numbering. I divide the extract into three entries solely by the cards (1 = card 6), 2 = card 7), 3 = card 8); the numbering is editorial, the card does not set it. THE PERSONS: the whole extract names TWO persons — Sebastyan Dłuski, starost of Łuków, the lessee for life (card 6), and Fr. Konstanty Szaniawski, bishop of Kraków, the founder of the boarding school (card 8). The starost returns three times more after that, but namelessly („tutejszego starostę”, „cegielni starościńskiej”, „łąk starościńskich”). THIS EXTRACT NAMES NEITHER PROPINATION NOR A BREWERY. There is one mill and it is a HORSE mill (worked by a horse gin), one inn and it is named by name („Wielki Dom”); the the annotations vocabulary knows no marker „młyn” or „karczma”, so they remain in the text of the extract and in the notes of the entry.
- V48 — THE V48 EXTRACT IS HERE QUITE UNLIKE THAT IN AN ORDINARY VILLAGE. In the part-held villages of this card index V48 is one line with the name of the village alone (for example Tarcze card 1), Rowce card 1); in the small town of Zbuczyn it grows to three lines about the church; here, in a parish and monastic town, it has five lines and enumerates the whole ecclesiastical, monastic and charitable network of Łuków. The extract gives neither hearths nor persons.
The card-index entries
Every extract for this locality in the wording of the cards, year by year. One block is one occurrence: this person, in this year. At a collective item the same card text stands beside every person named — because the card names them together and they must not be separated. The hearths given at a collective item are an equal division among those named, not a reading.
1789 T89Hearth tax register 1789
THE HEADING OF THIS WHOLE PART OF THE EXTRACT — it lists the composition of the Łuków starosty and its possessor, but IT GIVES NO HEARTHS OF ITS OWN, and therefore the hearths figure = empty; the hearths are carried only by the tables standing below. The numbering „1” is editorial, the card does not number the entries. THIS LINE GIVES NO FORENAME OF THE POSSESSOR — only „Dłuskiego”; the forename Sebastjan stands in the town part of T89 on card 2) („poses. Sebastjan Dłuski star. łukowski”) and there I recorded it, here I do not repeat it. THE LEASE IS FOR LIFE („dożywotnie”). THE COMPOSITION OF THE STAROSTY: the manor house in Łuków, the Łuków advocacy (wójtostwo łukowskie) and four villages — Sieciaszka, Poważe, Zdżary, Krynka. The same composition is given by T90 on card 1) („do starostwa należą Łuków, Sieciaszka, Zdżary, Poważe i Krynka”), there additionally with Łuków itself. The ending of the name „Zdżary” is in this hand a flat, horizontal stroke [the reading of the ending uncertain — I read „Zdżary” after the concordant writing in T90 on card 1)].
1789 T₀89List of possessors of holdings of 1789
The first entry of the list of the town. „na mieście tymże” — checked at sixfold magnification, I read „mieście” (not „miejscu”). The words „Alexego Jastrzębskiego” are written twice: once cleanly, once lower and struck through with a horizontal stroke — a scribal correction, not two persons.
the forename written with an „x”: „Alexego” (Aleksy)
The surname undeclined („Wojciecha Tys”), so the nominative „Tys” is certain.
A WOMAN — a forename of her own given, the surname in the feminine form. „wdowy sław.” = wdowa sławetna, a burgher widow; the writing itself makes no one deceased by name (the husband is not named), so I set the mark for a deceased person for no one.
The surname „Rola” (gen. „Roli”) — a form attested in `nazwiska.json`.
A WOMAN — a forename of her own and the surname in the feminine form. The same family as „ssrów Józefa Rudnickiego” on card 21).
[reading uncertain] The end of the surname corrected on the card (letters written over), checked at sixfold magnification — certain is „Musia…”, further „-towcza”. This surname is not in `nazwiska.json`.
[reading uncertain] on the card the genitive „Musiatowcza”; the nominative adopted as „Musiatowcz”, but „Musiatowicz” or „Musiatowiec” also possible
The only entry of the right-hand column of this card without a designation of status.
The surname written with an apostrophe before the ending („Smyk'a”) — thus the card index marks indeclinable surnames; the nominative „Smyk” certain. Cf. „ssrów sław. Franciszka Smyka” on card 18).
The genitive „Mozdżenia” → the nominative „Mozdżeń”. The same family as Antoni Mozdżeń (card 19) and Jakub Mozdżeń (card 20).
Before the forename stands a word STRUCK OUT, by its shape „sław” (sławetnego); since it is struck out, I assign no status to this person.
the same entry also names: Kosmalski Wojciech †2 persons on a holding without hearths
Two persons in one entry: the holding belongs to the SUCCESSORS of the deceased burgher (sławetny) Wojciech Kosmalski, and the „zaprzys.” (zaprzysiężony — the man who took the oath at the taking of the register) is the burgher (sławetny) Michał Kosmalski, named in the NOMINATIVE, not in the genitive. The same pattern returns on card 18) („zap. Jan Krasuski”) and card 20) („zap. Szymon Dybciak”).
the same entry also names: Kosmalski Michał2 persons on a holding without hearths
A WOMAN — the surname in the feminine form, as it stands on the card. The card adds no designation of status beside her.
„uczciwego” (honestus) — the only use of this designation in the whole list; the rest of the townsmen have „sław.” (sławetny), the last three „pracowity”.
A repetition mark („) in place of the „sław.” of the line above.
the same entry also names: Słowiński Anton[i] †2 persons on a holding without hearths
„zap.” = zaprzysiężony, sworn, in the nominative, in a separate line below the entry. THE ONLY KRASUSKI IN THE WHOLE LIST OF THE TOWN — a surname omnipresent in the villages of the parish of Trzebieszów, in Łuków it appears once only, and that not as the possessor of a holding but as the man taking the oath.
the same entry also names: Krasuski Jan2 persons on a holding without hearths
„zap.” = zaprzysiężony, sworn, in the nominative, in a separate line below the entry. THE ONLY KRASUSKI IN THE WHOLE LIST OF THE TOWN — a surname omnipresent in the villages of the parish of Trzebieszów, in Łuków it appears once only, and that not as the possessor of a holding but as the man taking the oath.
on the card „Słwińskiego” — without the „o” after the „Sł”; I read it as Słowiński after the certain writing „Jana Słowińskiego” on card 17)
[reading uncertain] The surname checked at sixfold magnification: certain is „Grz…owskiego”, the middle syllable is disputed. The surname is not in `nazwiska.json`.
[reading uncertain] the genitive read as „Grzyżowskiego”; „Grzeżowski”/„Grzozowski” also possible
The genitive „Chruścieła” → the nominative „Chruściel”.
The same Szymon Dybciak returns on card 20) twice: as the possessor of a holding and as „zap.” (zaprzysiężony, sworn) beside the holding of the successors of Wojciech Świerczowski.
The surname undeclined („Jakuba Staryss”), the nominative „Staryss” certain; the double „ss” checked at fivefold magnification.
[reading uncertain] The surname is unusual; checked at ninefold magnification and set against „Zaleskiego” (the same card) and „Leszczyńskiego” (the line below) — the shape of the capital letter agrees with a „Z”, not with an „L”.
[reading uncertain] the initial letter has the shape of the same „Z” as in the certain „Zaleskiego” from the same card; further „-wyssakowskiego”
An apostrophe before the ending („Sidor'a”) — the nominative „Sidor”.
An apostrophe before the ending — the nominative „Krauz”.
A WOMAN — a forename of her own given, the surname in the feminine form. The card does not say that she is a widow.
[reading uncertain as to the middle syllable] I read „Jasocińskiego”; not to be confused with „Zofii Jasieńskiej” from the same card — these are two different writings.
A repetition mark („) in place of „pracowitego”.
A repetition mark („) in place of „pracowitego”. The last entry with a name in the whole list.
Probably the husband of Zofia Rudnicka, the burgher widow from card 17) — but the card does not say so and I do not join the two.
[reading uncertain as to the forename] An apostrophe before the ending of the surname („Kostyan'a”) — the nominative „Kostyan” certain. The forename checked at fivefold magnification: „Ba-” is visible, a tall letter with a loop and „-era”.
[reading uncertain] the forename read as „Bakera” (nom. „Baker”); „Balcera” (= Baltazar) also possible, a form more natural for this neighbourhood
„pracowity” (laboriosus) — a peasant designation, not a burgher one; in the whole list of the town it appears only here and takes in the last three entries with names (Michał Cegiełka, Michał Piskorek, Paweł Zamecki).
[reading uncertain] The surname checked at sevenfold magnification: certain is „Prz-ą-…-kińskiego”, the letter after the „ą” is disputed.
[reading uncertain] I read „Prządkińskiego”; „Przędkiński” possible
on the card the genitive „Wereszki”; the nominative adopted as „Wereszko”, but „Wereszka” equally possible — the card index does not give the nominative
the same entry also names: Świerczowski Wojciech †2 persons on a holding without hearths
A QUESTION MARK ON THE CARD: between „cz.” and „ssrów” stands a clear, thickly set QUESTION MARK — a doubt of the author of the card index himself, not mine. The same question mark stands beside two entries of the right-hand column of this card (the successors of Fabian Osiński and the successors of Tomasz Zawiski); in the whole list of the town it occurs nowhere else and it always accompanies successors. The surname carried over to the second line („Swierczow-skiego”). „zap.” = zaprzysiężony, sworn, in the nominative.
the same entry also names: Dybciak Szymon2 persons on a holding without hearths

A question mark set by the author of the card index before „ssrów” — see the note at the entry with Wojciech Świerczowski.
The question mark of the author of the card index before „ssrów”. [reading uncertain] The surname read as „Zawiskiego”.
[reading uncertain] the capital letter has the shape of a „Z” (as in the certain „Zaleskiego”, card 18), not of an „Ł”
The same person who two lines above appears on this card as „zap.” (zaprzysiężony, sworn) beside the holding of the successors of Wojciech Świerczowski, and who has a holding of his own also in T₀89 on card 18).
A WOMAN — a forename of her own, the surname in the feminine form, called a widow outright. The line corrected on the card: the forename and the surname written twice, the lower writing („Łucji Daczkowskiej, wdowy”) is the final version.
The line corrected — the surname written twice, one above the other; both times legible as „Zbuckiego”.
the genitive „Wereszki”; the nominative adopted as „Wereszko” — as with Antoni on the same card
The genitive „Ciechonia” → the nominative „Ciechoń”.
A WOMAN — a forename of her own, the surname in the feminine form. The same family as Michał Pilski and Jakób Pilski (card 18).
1790 T90Hearth tax register 1790
The number of hearths („9”) is underlined on the card. This line gives no forename for the possessor — it is given only by St.89 („Sebastyana Dłuskiego”). The office: the card writes here „starosty zwolińskiego”, whereas St.89 and both cards of Cieszkowizna call the same person starost of Łuków — I do not reconcile the discrepancy. The addition „w tem(?) 1 przybył po r. 1789” — the abbreviation „tem” written above the line, the question mark in brackets set there by the compiler, the word „przybył” broken between the lines and running up to the right-hand edge of the frame [reading uncertain]. The description „dymów miejskich”, town hearths, the card applies to the wójtostwo (the wójt's holding), although the wójtostwo itself lies outside the town.
A DISCREPANCY IN THE SOURCE, checked under magnification on 19 IX 2026 and NOT smoothed over: the card writes plainly „w poses. Dłuskiego starosty zwolińskiego” [starost of Zwoleń (starosta zwoliński)]. All the remaining extracts for the same person — T89, T90, T94 and T₀89 of Cieszkowizna, T89, T90 and O83 of the town of Łuków — call him starost of ŁUKÓW. The card index does not explain this difference; it may be a slip of the author of the transcript, it may be a second starosty. To be resolved outside the card index.
The person of the possessor stands in the heading of entry 1) and takes in all five sub-entries a)–e); I enter him ONLY HERE (and separately in 1d, where the card names him a second time and in another role), so as not to count Dłuski five times. THE FORENAME written „Sebastjana”, with a „j”. THE SURNAME: „Dłuskiego” — the initial „D” of this hand has a closed loop cut by the stem of the „ł” and at first glance looks like „Ot”; three unstruck occurrences of the same surname decide the matter, on cards („Dłuskiego starosty zwolińskiego”), 582 and 583 („Sebastjana Dłuskiego starosty łukowskiego”) and St.89 on card 8) („Sebastyana Dłuskiego star. grod. Łukow.”). THE OFFICE: „starosty łukowskiego” — at variance with card, where the same Dłuski is called in T90 „starostą zwolińskim”; I do not reconcile the discrepancy. THE GRANGE counted as ONE town hearth — it is the smallest entry of the extract.
THE SAME PERSON AS IN no. 1a, but in another role and therefore entered a second time: in 1a Dłuski is the POSSESSOR of royal estates (the starosty), here the HEREDITARY OWNER of the Bernadynka jurydyka, that is its owner by inheritance. The card names him in this line a second time, with forename and office, so this is not an editorial repetition but a second, independent occurrence. In merging the index of persons it must be remembered that this is one man. THE NAME OF THE JURYDYKA: „Bernadynka” — so on the card, with one „r” and without an „r” in the second syllable (not „Bernardynka”), although O83 on card 8) already writes „bernardynów” in the full form. I record the name literally. The Bernardine jurydyka with 8 hearths is the third largest territory of the town. „dziedz.” = dziedzictwa/dziedziczna — I expand the abbreviation only in this note, in the text of the extract it remains as on the card.
O83 O83A description of 1783 [the expansion of the siglum to be confirmed]
THE FIRST ENTRY OF THE EXTRACT, opening O83 for Łuków. „MIASTO GRODOWE I ZIEMSKIE” — two courts in one town: the castle court (that of the starost) and the land court; this is the strongest designation of the constitutional rank of a place in the whole card index and the counterpart of the note „MP – miasto - siedziba starostwa łukowskiego” from card 8). CHURCH AFFILIATION: the archdeaconry of Lublin, the deanery of Łuków. THE TITLE OF POSSESSION: „w dożywotniej dzierżawie” — the same formula as at Zbuczyn („w dożywotniej posesji Cieszkowskiego”). T90 on card 1) says only „w poses.”, without „dożywotniej”; this card is therefore the more precise. The forename is written here „Sebastyana” (with a „y”), and in T90 on card 1) „Sebastjana” (with a „j”) — both forms I leave as they stand and I do not standardise them. THE CHURCHES: the parish church (without a dedication — the dedication of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is given by V48 on the same card); a small WOODEN church of the Holy Spirit, a hospital church; the college and the BRICK church of the Piarist Fathers with WOODEN schools; the monastery of the Bernardine Fathers OF THE RUTHENIAN PROVINCE with a brick church, lying to the south. The belonging of the Bernardines to the Ruthenian province is a detail worth recording — nowhere else in the card index does it recur. The abbreviation beside the Piarists is written „X.X.” (with dots after both letters), whereas T90 on card 2) writes „XX”; I leave both shapes literally. The entry breaks off at the lower edge of the card, without a mark of carrying over; the continuation is on card 7).
the forename on this card with a „y”: „Sebastyana”
THE ONLY PERSON NAMED IN THE WHOLE O83 OF THIS UNIT: Fr. Konstanty Szaniawski, bishop of Kraków, the founder of the boarding college (konwikt). The title on the card reads „księcia” — the bishops of Kraków styled themselves princes of Siewierz, so I record the office as „biskup krakowski” and leave the word „księcia” in the text of the extract. The status „fundator” does not belong to the the annotations dictionary, so I set no annotation at this entry, and I keep the information in the person's the status field and here. THE BOARDING COLLEGE: of brick, of the name of the Szaniawscy, for ORPHANS and the impoverished, for 12 PERSONS, provided with revenues. It is the same boarding college that T90 on card 1) counts as 6 town hearths (no. 1e) — there without the founder and without a description. A WORD STRUCK OUT between „sierot i” and „podupadłych”: short, blotted out with several strokes, illegible; I do not guess [reading uncertain]. THE FIELD „Stoinszczyzna” — read letter by letter (S-t-o-i-n-s-z-c-z-y-z-n-a), in the compiler's quotation marks. THE RIVER: „rz. Wielka Krzna” — a two-part name, distinguishing it from the Krzna of card 7) (the „Kamienny” bridge). THE „FIGURA” near „Glinków”: a wayside figure (a pillar shrine) to the north of Łuków, in the direction of Gołaszyn; both names in the compiler's quotation marks. „Glinków” — the ending „-ów” certain. THE PIARIST BRICKYARD — the third brickyard outside the town (after that of the starost and that of the Bernardines from card 7), belonging to the college of the Piarist Fathers, which T90 counts as 3 hearths. This extract ends on this card; below stand already two sigla from outside the list — „MP” and „St.89” — described in the the note of card 8).
on the card „księcia Konstantego Szaniawskiego, biskupa krakowskiego”
