Hearth Tax Registers of the Łuków Land 1775–1794
Gręzówka
Parish of Łuków, łukowski county.
Dear reader, remember that this is an AI study, that it may contain errors; treat it as indicative and verify it for yourself.
Offices: Potocki Kajetan (starost of Dymir (starosta dymierski) · starost of Dymir (starosta dymirski))
Propination, inns, breweries: Potocki Kajetan (brewery, inn)
More than five hearths in one hand: Potocki Kajetan (31)
Extracts from outside the registers
Records under sigla which the card index does not expand. They give no hearths, so they enter no total.
note: The siglum „MP” from outside the list of sources — it does not enter the reckoning of hearths, just as at Trzebieszów (card ad1): „MP - miasteczko - siedziba dzierżawy;”), Zbuczyn (card 2) and Łuków (card 8). The reading is certain, the line short. THE MEANING: Gręzówka is here called the SEAT OF THE LEASEHOLD — this agrees with T90 („dzierżawa Gręzowska”), with T89 („dzierżawa gręzowska”), with T75 („Starostwo gręzowskie”) and with Ls.89 („star. Gręzowskie”), which call the same unit now a leasehold, now a starosty. The name of the village is written „Gręzowka”, the word itself struck through and written again by the same hand (a correction of the spelling, not a deletion of the content).
note: The siglum „Ls.89” (the lustration of 1789) from outside the list of sources — it does not enter the reckoning of hearths; the same siglum stands at Kot Wiśniowski (card). The extract gives not a single hearth: the hearths figure null. THREE UNCERTAIN PLACES, which I set out one by one: (1) A WORD WRITTEN ABOVE — above the line, in a small hand and with an opening bracket, „(gręzowskiego” has been added, and from the addition a stroke runs down inserting it into the line immediately after the word „starosty”, before „przedtem”; the reading of the addition itself is certain. (2) „przedtem urzędowskiego” — a former title; the letters „-owskiego” are certain, the beginning of the word („urzęd-”) runs together into one loop and the reading is UNCERTAIN; I also considered „uszpolskiego”. I draw attention to the fact that card 1 (card 1) calls the same man TWICE differently: T90 „starosty dymierskiego”, O83 „starosty dymirskiego”. These are, then, three different titles of the same person in three extracts; I harmonise none of them. (3) THE KIND OF POSSESSION — the word after „a w possessyi”, defining the possession of Walenty Rychki, is ILLEGIBLE: it begins with „a-”, has a tall loop in the middle and ends with „-ney”; I looked at it at a sevenfold magnification. The candidates: „arendowney”, „zastawney”, „aktualney” — I confirm none of them and I DO NOT GUESS. (4) THE SURNAME OF THE POSSESSOR — „Rychkiego”, that is Rychki, the genitive „Walentego Rychkiego”; the letters „Rych-” are certain, the ending runs together and the forms „Rychckiego” / „Rychlickiego” are possible too [reading uncertain]. This surname has not hitherto been attested in this neighbourhood — I report it. (5) After „grodu warsz.” stands a short word (3–4 letters), THICKLY SCORED OVER, not to be read; I mark it as struck out. The extract breaks off at „Klimki” and has its continuation on card 3).
note: The continuation of the Ls.89 extract from card 2) — the card itself marks this with the abbreviation „c.d.” and an ellipsis in the place of the broken-off sentence. The extract gives neither hearths nor any surname: the hearths figure null, the list of persons empty. THE COMPOSITION OF THE LEASEHOLD closes here: to Gręzówka, Biardy and Klimki, named on card 2, are added Wólka Świątkowa, Dąbie and Jagodne — six villages in all, in agreement with T89 on card 2. UNCERTAIN READINGS: (1) „w sapowaciźnie” — a term of the soil (grunt sapowaty, boggy ground); the letters „sapowac-” are certain, the ending „-iźnie” [reading uncertain]. (2) „kawał. folw.” — so it stands, with two full stops of abbreviation; the expansion („kawał folwarku”? „kawałami folwark”?) I leave unexpanded. (3) „nowiny” — the last word of the sentence about the fields; the letters „no-” and the final „-y” are certain, the middle runs together; „nawozny” is possible too [reading uncertain]. (4) The second paragraph is preceded by a repetition mark in the shape of a compact „ʒ” with a colon, the third by an ordinary lower quotation mark „; both stand for a repetition of the siglum Ls.89 and so I record them. THE LABOUR DUES: the sentence about the village headmen is taken on the card into quotation marks, that is, transcribed literally from the lustration — it speaks of a headmanship on two włóki and of eight householders settled in Gręzówka. THESE ARE NOT HEARTHS, but settlement and a due; it enters no total.
spellings on the cards: Gręzówka, Grezówka, Gręzowka, Grezowka
district of łukowski · parish of Łuków · cards 1), 2), 3)
a royal village (dobra król.), the seat of a lease also called the starosty of Gręzówka (starostwo gręzowskie), held for life by Kajetan Potocki, starost of Dymir (starosta dymirski); to the lease belong Gręzówka, Biardy, Klimki, Świątkowa Wólka, Dąbie and Jagodne; a grange, a chapel, a brewery, two inns, a village headmanship (sołtystwo) on two włóki [V48, T90, T89, O83 (IX), MP, Ls.89]
| Year | Source | Entries | Hearths |
|---|---|---|---|
| T75 | Hearth tax register 1775 | 1 | 77 |
| T89 | Hearth tax register 1789 | 1 | 31 |
| T90 | Hearth tax register 1790 | 2 | 34 |
Without an extract for 1794 — no card of this village carries that tariff. It is a missing extract in the card index, not a gap in the numbering of the cards.
These years count more here than the locality itself: 1775 — the whole starosty of Gręzówka. Such a figure must not be set beside the other years as two measurements of the same locality — these are different units of account, not a loss of hearths.
Caveats on the years' registers (2)
What the compiler noted beside the entry itself, and what the table above does not show:
- T89 — The extract lists SIX villages of the lease (Gręzowka, Biardy, Klimki, Świątkowa Wolka, Dąbie, Jagodne), while T90 on card 1 lists four. I do not smooth the discrepancy over. The hearths are written out for Gręzówka alone — the remaining five villages this card does not count.
- T90 — The card's total: „razem 34 dymów wiejskich 2giej klasy” — underlined twice; 2 + 32 = 34, the reckoning closes. The extract lists a FOUR-VILLAGE composition of the lease (Gręzówka, Biardy, Klimki and Wólka Świętkowa), while T89 on card 2 lists SIX villages (Dąbie and Jagodne are added), and Ls.89 on cards 2–3 six as well. This is a discrepancy between the sources of 1790 and 1789, not an error of reading — I do not smooth it over. The name is „Wólka Świętkowa” in T90, „Świątkowa Wolka” in T89, „Wólka Świątkowa” in Ls.89.
The card-index entries
Every extract for this locality in the wording of the cards, year by year. One block is one occurrence: this person, in this year. At a collective item the same card text stands beside every person named — because the card names them together and they must not be separated. The hearths given at a collective item are an equal division among those named, not a reading.

1790 T90Hearth tax register 1790
Kajetan Potocki I enter at THIS entry only because it is the first — the extract names him in the opening line as the possessor of the WHOLE Gręzówka lease, and not of the grange alone. I do not repeat him at the second entry, so as not to double the person in the index. The title is written here „dymierskiego”, and in O83 on the same card „dymirskiego” — I leave both forms as they stand. The card classes the hearths as „wiejskie 2giej klasy”.
O83 O83A description of 1783 [the expansion of the siglum to be confirmed]
A short description of the village; it gives neither figures nor a list of holdings, hence the hearths figure empty. The siglum is written „O83(IX)”, the Roman numeral in brackets underlined. The surname is carried over on this card onto the second line with a division („Po-” / „tockiego”) — it is one word, not an initial. THIS EXTRACT GIVES NO FORENAME (otherwise than T90 and T89, which call him Kajetan) — I leave the given name empty and do not merge the persons between the years. The title is written „dymirskiego”, where T90 on the same card has „dymierskiego”, and Ls.89 on card 2 „urzędowskiego” [reading uncertain]; I do not standardise the three forms.
