Hearth Tax Registers of the Łuków Land 1775–1794

Zalesie

Parish of Łuków, łukowski county.

Dear reader, remember that this is an AI study, that it may contain errors; treat it as indicative and verify it for yourself.

Card 4 is missing from the card index (numbering within the village). CARD NO. 4 IS MISSING. Eight cards (747–754) carry the cards numbered 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 — after card 3 (card 3) there comes at once card 5 (card 5). The number of the card and the number within the village run in agreement and without transposition (747→1, 748→2, 749→3, 750→5, 751→6, 752→7, 753→8, 754→9), the cards follow one another in the card index without a break, and there are no duplicates in this village. The gap is therefore in the card index itself, not in the going through of it. ¶ WHAT STOOD ON CARD 4 — from the context of the neighbouring cards: card 3 (card 3) carries T90 entries 1–5 and BREAKS OFF AT ENTRY 5 WITHOUT A TOTAL (there is neither a „Razem dymów” nor the addition „c.d.” — the card simply ends with entry 5 at the lower edge of the card stock). Card 5 (card 5) begins with a new siglum „T94.” with entry 1. The lost card 4 contained therefore THE CONTINUATION OF THE REGISTER OF 1790 (T90) — the entries from 6 upwards — TOGETHER WITH ITS CLOSING TOTAL. ¶ THE CONSEQUENCE FOR THE RECKONING: the total of T90 for Zalesie is INCOMPLETE. The recorded entries 1–5 give 28 hearths, whereas the register of 1775 (T75) counts 45 hearths in this village, and the register of 1794 (T94) 46 hearths. There are missing therefore in T90 some 17–18 hearths, which stood on card 4. 28 must not be given as the number of the hearths of Zalesie in the year 1790. ¶ THE CONSEQUENCE FOR THE PERSONS: from T90 all the possessors of holdings from entry 6 onwards have been lost — among them most probably the holding of Baltazar Jasiński, which for this village is attested by T75 (entry 6, „cz. Jasinskiego – dymów 4”) and T94 (entry 4, „cz. Baltazara Jasińskiego – 5 dymów”), and which in the surviving part of T90 IS NOT THERE. ¶ Apart from this one gap the series of the village is unbroken: card 1 — S87 and T75 entries 1–9; card 2 — T75 cont. entries 10–19 with the total „Razem dymów 45”; card 3 — T90 entries 1–5 (broken off); [card 4 — MISSING]; card 5 — T94 entries 1–14 with the total „Razem – 46 dymów” and V48; card 6 — O83 (IX) and T89; card 7 — T89 cont.; card 8 — T₀89 entries 1–12; card 9 — T₀89 cont. entries 13–27.

Offices: Jasiński Baltazar (land and castle scribe of Czersk (pisarz ziemski i grodzki czerski); Zalewski Kazimierz (castle scribe of Łuków (pisarz grodzki łukowski) · castle scribe of Łuków and civil-military commissioner (pisarz grodzki łukowski i komisarz cywilno-wojskowy)

Propination, inns, breweries: Krasuski Dominik (inn, propination); Zalewski Kazimierz (brewery, inn, propination); Zdanowski Krzysztof (inn, propination)

Caveats on the years' registers (3)

What the compiler noted beside the entry itself, and what the table above does not show:

  • T75 — The hearth tax register of 1775 for Zalesie, set out on two cards: entries 1–9 on card 1 (card 1), entries 10–19 on card 2 (card 2) under the heading „T75 c.d.”. ¶ THE RECKONING CLOSES TO A SINGLE HEARTH: card 1 gives 13+1+2+2+2+4+2+3+4 = 33, card 2 gives 1+2+1+2+1+1+1+1+1+1 = 12, together 45 — and card 2 itself gives „Razem dymów 45” and underlines that figure twice. The reading of all nineteen figures is therefore confirmed by the reckoning. ¶ NOT ONE OF THE THREE WORDS `propinacja`, `browar`, `karczma` DOES THIS REGISTER CONTAIN — it gives solely the numbers of hearths, without a breakdown of the buildings, beside none of the nineteen entries. Checked on all five strips of both cards. ¶ Zalesie has in the year 1775 forty-five hearths divided among nineteen holdings and about thirty-five persons — it is a petty-noble village of very much fragmented ownership, with one larger nest (the thirteen hearths of the Zalescy in entry 1).
  • T90 — The hearth tax register of 1790 for Zalesie — PRESERVED IN PART. Card 3 (card 3) carries entries 1–5 and breaks off at entry 5 at the lower edge of the card stock. ¶ THE CARD GIVES NO TOTAL, and for that reason the total from the card remains empty, while the field the total written on the card I do NOT fill — the card declares no figure which the recorded entries fail to reach; it simply ends in the middle of the register. The recorded entries give 9+1+14+1+3 = 28 hearths. ¶ THIS FIGURE IS NOT THE NUMBER OF THE HEARTHS OF ZALESIE IN THE YEAR 1790 and it must not be so used. The continuation of the register together with its total stood on card no. 4, which is missing from the card index (see the list of missing cards of the village). For comparison: T75 counts 45 hearths in this village, T94 — 46; there are missing therefore in T90 some seventeen to eighteen hearths. ¶ WHAT WAS LOST TOGETHER WITH CARD 4: not only the figures, but the surnames as well. In the surviving part of T90 there is NEITHER Jasiński (whose holdings in Zalesie are attested by T75 entry 6 and T94 entry 4), NOR Zdanowski, Krasuski, the Karwowscy, Michowiecki, Królikowski, Chromiński, Dębowski, Moszczybrodzki and Karaś — all those whom T75, and in part T94, records. They stood in all likelihood on card 4. ¶ I HAVE CHECKED THAT T90 DOES NOT RETURN FURTHER ON: on cards 5)–754 there is nowhere a heading „T90 c.d.” (the left-hand margins of all the strips of these five cards, where the siglum stands, have been gone through). Card 5 begins anew, with the siglum T94. ¶ NOT ONE OF THE THREE WORDS `propinacja`, `browar`, `karczma` does this register contain — it gives solely the numbers of hearths. ¶ THE MARKERS: in this village two of the three forms occur — „/pł. of./” and „/n. pł. of./”; the form „/p. of./” does not occur even once. Copied literally into the field the marker, without expansion.
  • S87 — One line at the very top of card 1 (card 1), above the heading line of the register T75. Unlike in most villages of this card index it is NOT accompanied on the right-hand side by the cartographic note V48 — that stands only on card 5 (card 5).

The card-index entries

Every extract for this locality in the wording of the cards, year by year. One block is one occurrence: this person, in this year. At a collective item the same card text stands beside every person named — because the card names them together and they must not be separated. The hearths given at a collective item are an equal division among those named, not a reading.

The figure 13 is underlined and itself looks corrected (a trace of the pen is visible beneath the digit of the units), but THE RECKONING OF THE WHOLE REGISTER CONFIRMS IT: entries 1–9 of this card plus 10–19 of the next give exactly 45, that is the total which card 2 itself gives. ¶ A DELETION: after the forename „Macieja” the author struck out two words with a horizontal stroke and went on from „Antoniego”. Checked with one twofold magnification: the first deleted word is illegible (the stroke runs through the middle of the letters, only a tall initial letter is visible), the second reads as „Bracią” — the author probably began to write the formula „z Bracią”, such as in entry 7 of the same card („cz. Fabiana Zalewskiego z Bracią”), and then changed his mind and listed the brothers by forename. The deletion I do not count towards the hearths — and it need not be counted, because the total closes without it. ¶ This is the largest entry of the register of 1775 in this village: thirteen of the forty-five hearths of Zalesie in one nest of the Zaleskis.
A WOMAN. The card gives no forename of her own, but a form derived from the husband's name: „cz. Jakóbowej wdowy … Zaleskich”. I record this form literally in the recorded form of the name and DO NOT EXPAND it — the card does not say exactly whose widow she was, and „Jakóbowa” is as much as the source says. The surname stands at the end of the collective entry, in the masculine plural („Zaleskich”), and in that form I enter it, in accordance with the rule for collective entries. She stands first in the whole register.

A BYNAME [READING UNCERTAIN]. The card writes in the genitive „Kazimierza Dziudzinka” — the word passes from the end of one line to the beginning of the next. Checked under a single twofold magnification: the first four letters „Dziu” are legible beyond doubt, the ending „-inka” likewise, whereas the middle group of letters is run together and can be read both as „dz” and as „b” or „bz” — hence the possible forms „Dziudzinek”, „Dziubinek”, „Dziubzinek”. I adopt „Dziudzinek” as the nearest to the shape of the letters, BUT I DO NOT REGARD THE READING AS RESOLVED and report it. A byname in this form is neither in `SLOWNIK-OKOLICY.md` nor among the bynames attested hitherto in the card index — it is a NEW byname.

The byname „Kłysa” in the genitive, beside the forename; the family surname only at the end of the entry („Zaleskich”). The same byname returns in T90 on card 3 („Kazimierza i Adama Kłysów … po Zaleskich”), which confirms that Kłys is a byname of the Zaleskis and not a separate surname.

The deletion I do not count towards the hearths — and it need not be counted, because the total closes without it. ¶ This is the largest entry of the register of 1775 in this village: thirteen of the forty-five hearths of Zalesie in one nest of the Zaleskis.
The card writes „2 Stanisławów” — two namesakes without any distinction; I enter them as two separate persons. The reading of the figure „2” before the forename has been checked under twofold magnification and confirmed by the reckoning (without the second Stanisław the entry comes to twelve persons instead of thirteen hearths).

A WOMAN. The card gives no forename of her own, but a form derived from the husband's name: „cz. Wojciechowej Domanskiej”. I record this form literally in the recorded form of the name and DO NOT EXPAND it — the card says nothing beyond that. T754 hearths6) cz. Jasinskiego – dymów 4card 1)
THIS ENTRY IS THE KEY TO THE RECKONING WITH ŁAWKI. Four hearths of Jasiński's holding in Zalesie in 1775; in 1794 the register T94 counts five of them. The same holdings enter into the thirty-two hearths at which the card of Ławki (f. 670) reckons in T89 the estate of Baltazar Jasiński „z częściami na wsiach Gołaszynie i Zalesiu”, and into the grange which the T₀89 of Ławki describes by the same formula. IN SUMMING UP, THESE HEARTHS MUST NOT BE COUNTED TWICE — either one counts the 32 hearths of the Ławki estate complex as a whole, or Ławki separately (18 hearths according to T90 and T94) and Jasiński's holdings in Zalesie and Gołaszyn separately. ¶ In the surviving part of the T90 of Zalesie (card 3) Jasiński DOES NOT APPEAR — his entry stood in all probability on the lost card 4.
THE CARD GIVES NO FORENAME — there stands only „cz. Jasinskiego”, without a forename and without an office, so the field the given name remains empty (this is not a form derived from a husband's name, but simply the absence of a forename). The card writes „Jasinskiego”, without the diacritic; I record the unified form „Jasiński” in accordance with the rule (Jasiński = Jasieński). ¶ That BALTAZAR Jasiński is meant, land and castle scribe of Czersk (pisarz ziemski i grodzki czerski), is attested by the register of 1794 on card 5) („4) cz. Baltazara Jasińskiego – 5 dymów”) and by the cards of Ławki (card 1), T89 and T₀89: „z częściami na wsiach Gołaszynie i Zalesiu”) — but THE REGISTER OF 1775 DOES NOT SAY SO, and I do not add the forename in its stead.
ZalewskiFabian
T752 hearths7) cz. Fabiana Zalewskiego z Bracią – dymów 2card 1)
The card writes „z Bracią”, WITHOUT NAMING the brothers by forename — I therefore enter only Fabian and leave the brother (or brothers) unnamed, because the source does not name them. Two hearths for this community. ¶ The same formula „z Bracią” stands in entry 1 of this card in a struck-out form — the author began to use it there, and then listed the brothers by forename. ¶ THE SURNAME: in this village the card writes two forms side by side — „Zaleski” (entry 1, and all the occurrences in T90) and „Zalewski” (entries 3, 7 and 8 of this card). I record each as it stands in the given line, and I do not unify them on my own authority: this may be one surname in two spellings, but it may also be two different families in one village. FOR THE OWNER TO DECIDE.
Zalewska
T753 hearthswidow8) cz. Zalewskiej wdowy – dymów 3card 1)

Three hearths in a woman's hands — in this register more is held only by the collective entry of the Zaleskis (13), Jasiński's holding (4) and the Domańskis' holding (4). The widow Zalewska is one of the three women in the whole of my part of the Zalesie extracts.

A WOMAN. The card stops at the surname in the feminine form and at the condition: „cz. Zalewskiej wdowy”. It gives no forename, and it gives no form derived from a husband's name either, so the given name and the recorded form of the name remain empty — this is not a „Jakóbowa” or a „Wojciechowa”, but simply the absence of a forename. The surname in the feminine form, just as it stands on the card.

The first entry of card 2 (f. 748), under the heading „T75 c.d.”. The figure „1” is underlined. The third and last woman in my part of the Zalesie extracts.

A WOMAN, THE SURNAME [READING UNCERTAIN]. The card writes „…urzowskiey wdowy”; the ending „-urzowskiey wdowy” is legible beyond doubt, whereas THE INITIAL CAPITAL OF THE SURNAME remains unsettled. Checked with one twofold magnification: the glyph has a vertical stem with a hook at the top and a sharp ending in the shape of a „V”, so that it can be read as a „T” (→ Turzowska), as a „V” (→ Vurzowska, a non-Polish form), or as a „J” (→ Jurzowska). The shape does not agree exactly with any of these majuscules elsewhere in the same hand („Tomasza” in the line below has a „T” with a horizontal bar, „Jana” has a „J” with a lower loop). I enter the form „Turzowska” as the closest to the shape of the letters, but I DO NOT REGARD THE READING AS SETTLED — I report it FOR THE OWNER TO DECIDE. The surname in none of the three forms is in `SLOWNIK-OKOLICY.md`. ¶ The card gives no forename of her own and gives no form derived from a husband's name — the given name and the recorded form of the name are empty. ¶ Before the surname stands one more blurred sign, which I read as the abbreviation „cz.” (as in the remaining eighteen entries of this register), though its shape more resembles the letter „a”.

T₀891) części Baltazara Jasieńskiego, pisarza ziem. i grodz. czerskiego; zob. Ławki.card 8)
A CROSS-REFERENCE, NOT A SEPARATE LIST. „zob. Ławki” points to cards 1)–671 of the village of ŁAWKI, where T89 reckons „Baltazara Jasińskiego pisarza ziemi czerskiey z częściami na wsiach Gołaszynie i Zalesiu … = 32 d.”, and T₀89 writes „folw. Baltazara Jasieńskiego … z częściami na Gołaszynie i Zalesiu; propinacja”. I NOTE THIS OPENLY, SO THAT THE HEARTHS ARE NOT COUNTED TWICE: the 32 hearths of Ławki INCLUDE Jasiński's Zalesie holding, and so in summing up Zalesie they must not be added in. In agreement with this is the fact that the T89 of Zalesie (cards 6)–752) has no entry for Jasiński at all and closes with the note „Razem 42 dymów. zob. Ławki”. Separate from it stands T94 (card 5), entry 4), which counts the same holding in Zalesie as 5 hearths — that is another year and another treatment, not a duplicate.

THE SURNAME ON THE CARD IS „Jasińskiego” (T94) / „Jasieńskiego” (T₀89) — I record the unified form „Jasiński” in accordance with the rule (Jasiński = Jasieński).

On that reading the holdings are fourteen — Antoni Józwik, Marcin Józwik, Wawrzyniec Żakowicz, Antoni Żakowicz, Józef Żakowicz, Kazimierz Kłys, Adam Kłys, Maciej Tobiasz, Kazimierz Tobiasz, Rafał Brych, the successors of Kazimierz, the successors of Jan Dzieciak (Stanisław and Jan), Marcin Jachimiak, Wojciech Jachimiak — and the reckoning closes to a single hearth. ¶ I record nonetheless ALL SIXTEEN PERSONS, because all of them are named in the source; two of them (Stanisław and Jan) share a hearth with Jan Dzieciak. ¶ The alternative reading — that Stanisław and Jan are separate possessors and that two hearths were lost somewhere in the entry — does not close the reckoning, and for that reason I reject it, NOTING that the card does not settle this expressly by its punctuation: [an interpretation, not the literal wording of the card]. ¶ This is the richest nest of bynames in the whole village: Józwik, Żakowicz, Kłys, Tobiasz, Brych, Dzieciak, Jachimiak — seven bynames of the Zaleskis in one entry, all of them NEW to this card index. ¶ THE MARKERS „/pł. of./” and „/n. pł. of./” are copied literally into the marker, beside those persons beside whom they stand; where the card does not set them, the field remains empty.
The card writes „sukces. Kazimierza” — Kazimierz himself is deceased, and the holdings are held by his successors, whom the card DOES NOT NAME. I enter him, because it is he who is named in the source. There is no byname beside him, so I do not guess which of the Kazimierzes of this entry (Kłys or Tobiasz) he might be.

The card writes directly after Jan Dzieciak: „Stanisława i Jana”. I read them as the SUCCESSORS of Jan Dzieciak, named by forename — it is the only reading under which the reckoning of the entry closes (see the note to the entry). I do not assign them a byname, because the card sets none beside them, and I do not mark them as deceased — they are the living heirs. | „sukcesorowie” means the heirs of a deceased person — we enter that person, with the mark for a deceased person.

Three persons with one hearth each, three in all — the reckoning closes. ¶ A CORRECTION BY THE AUTHOR: beside the forename of the second Wojciech the author struck out the member first written there (the stroke runs through the middle of the letters, the deleted word is illegible) and wrote above the line „Kilianiuka”; beside the deletion there also stands a marker superscribed in a small hand. The sense of the entry is the same in both cases and the total does not change on that account. ¶ THE LAST ENTRY OF CARD 3 — and the last surviving entry of the register of 1790 for Zalesie. The card breaks off here, right at the lower edge of the card stock, WITHOUT A TOTAL and without the note „c.d.”; the continuation stood on card no. 4, which is not in the card index.
A NEW BYNAME, IN THE FORM CORRECTED BY THE AUTHOR. The card first wrote the byname in one way, after which the author struck it out and WROTE ABOVE THE LINE the form „Kilianiuka” — and it is this superscribed form, as the copyist's last will, that I enter into the data. In the nominative „Kilianiuk”. ¶ In T75, entry 13, on card 2 the same person bears the form „Kilanik(?)”, there with a question mark set by the author himself. The two forms — „Kilanik” and „Kilianiuk” — I do NOT unify on my own authority; I report the matter for the owner to decide.

THE FIGURE BESIDE THIS ENTRY IS NOT LEGIBLE: the dotted leader runs right up to the summation rule and the figure in the right-hand column is lost in it. The figure 1 follows from the reckoning: the thirteen remaining entries give 45, and the card gives „Razem – 46 dymów”. In accordance with the rule („rachunek zastępuje oglądanie” — the reckoning takes the place of looking) I take it to be 1.

A CAUTION WHEN MERGING — THE RISK OF DOUBLE COUNTING. This is the same Baltazar Jasiński, land and castle scribe of Czersk (pisarz ziemski i grodzki czerski), whom T89 of 1789 reckons together at the village of ŁAWKI (card 1): „Baltazara Jasińskiego pisarza ziemi czerskiey Z CZĘŚCIAMI NA WSIACH GOŁASZYNIE I ZALESIU … = 32 d.”. These 5 hearths of the register of 1794 are his Zalesie holding counted SEPARATELY, within Zalesie, and they enter into the total „Razem – 46 dymów” of this card. It must not be added to the 32 hearths of Ławki — that would be to count the same substance twice. The card index itself separates these two treatments expressly: the T89 of Zalesie (cards 6)–752) HAS no entry for Jasiński and closes with the note „Razem 42 dymów. zob. Ławki”, while the T₀89 of Zalesie (card 8) gives him entry 1) with the cross-reference „zob. Ławki” and without any figure.

THE SURNAME ON THE CARD IS „Jasińskiego” (T94) / „Jasieńskiego” (T₀89) — I record the unified form „Jasiński” in accordance with the rule (Jasiński = Jasieński).

The byname „Bryka”: the end of the word is covered by a thick ink correction — [reading uncertain]. Checked under a single magnification; the shape „Bry-k-a” is legible, the last letters written over.

STRUCK OUT ON THE CARD, with a thick stroke, with the note „–1 dym–” written above him. I enter him, because he is named in the source, but in the total of 3 hearths he is not there.

After the forename stands a word with a heavy correction and a sign written over it; I read it as „Seniusza” [READING UNCERTAIN]. The same person in T90 on card 3) („Wojciecha Siemienia”) and in T89 on card 7) („Antoniego, Wojciecha Siemień”) bears the byname SIEMIEŃ, and that form I adopt here; the literal shape from this card I leave in the report as uncertain.
