Caveats on the years' registers (7)

What the compiler noted beside the entry itself, and what the table above does not show:

  • T75 — The register of 1775 spread over two cards: entries 1-10 on card 1 (card 1), entries 11-15 and the summing-up on card 2 (card 2), where the siglum is repeated with the addition „T75 c.d.”. The heading of the register is the bare siglum in the left margin, „T75 —”; the name of the village and the word „dymy:” beside the siglum ARE NOT THERE (unlike, for instance, at Gołaszyn) — the rest of the line is empty, checked at the join of strips `b` and `c` of card 1). THE ARITHMETICAL CHECK: card 1 gives 16+9+2+5+1+3+1+1+1+2 = 41, card 2 gives 2+1+1+1+1 = 6, together 47 — exactly what the summing-up „Razem dymów 47” gives. The reading of all fifteen figures is confirmed by the reckoning. THE BUILDINGS AND PROPINATION: T75 does not break the holdings down into buildings and does not once use the words „browar”, „karczma” or „propinacja”. The only designations of buildings are the general „budynek” (entry 14) and the craftsmen at the mill — „młynarz” (entry 12) and „kowal” (entry 13). This agrees with the rest of the Łazy card index: breweries and inns are named only by T89 (card 4, card 4), and propination by T₀89 (cards 5 and 6, cards 5)-677). THE TOTAL OF 47 returns afterwards in T90 (card 3) and T89 (card 4) — three years give the same number of hearths for Łazy, and only T94 (card 2) has 46.
  • T89 — The whole extract fits on card 4 and ends with the summing-up „Razem 47 d.”; the entries add up exactly. Beside the summing-up stands a separate note: „T89 – zob. Łuków;” — a cross-reference to the town of Łuków, where the further part of the estate is in all probability recorded; the total of 47 is the total of the holdings entered under Łazy alone. THE BUILDINGS: T89 names at Łazy 1 mill, 2 breweries (entries 1 and 2 — „brow.”, entry 3 — „brow.”, 3 breweries in all) and 5 inns; the words „karczma”/„browar” are abbreviated in the text („karcz.”, „brow.”), but the reading is certain — the same abbreviations recur in three entries. PROPINATION T89 does not name once.
  • T₀89 — The list of possessors of 1789 begins on card 5 (entries 1–7) and ends on card 6 (entries 8–10, under the heading „T₀89 – p. d.”, that is ciąg dalszy, continued). Line 1 carries the word „części”, and the lines below it have a repetition mark („) in its place, rendered here as „ at the beginning of the text of the extract. The annotation „nie wysiewa 10 korcy” stands written out beside entries 2 and 3, while entries 4–7 have „podobnież” in that place — a reference back to the line above; all these entries receive the annotation. A GREAT BRACE with the vertical inscription „nie wysiewają 10 korcy”, taking in a dozen or more entries at once, IS NOT THERE in this list — neither on card 5 nor on card 6: on card 5 the repetition is dealt with by the word „podobnież”, and on card 6 the last three entries have no addition about korce at all, only the addition „propinacja”. The list gives no hearths, and so the hearths figure and the total from the card are empty by design. PROPINATION: it occurs solely in entries 8, 9 and 10 (card 6), beside the three largest holdings — those of Jan Łaski, Andrzej Szaniawski and Antoni Łaski, standard-bearer of Łuków (chorąży łukowski). The word is written each time in full, „propinacja”, without abbreviation; the reading is certain. The words „karczma” and „browar” T₀89 does not use once.
  • T90 — the summing-up on the card: „Razem dymów: 47” — the units figure corrected (7 written over 8); the entries add up to 47, and so the correction is right
  • T94 — the summing-up on the card: „Razem — 46 dymów”; the entries add up exactly
  • S87 — The 1787 census in a single line, at the very top of card 1 (card 1), to the left of the cartographic note V48. The siglum is written as an „S” with the subscript „87”. After the siglum the name of the village is NOT repeated — the figures follow at once: „247 l. + 39 ż. razem 286 l.”, with „286 l.” underlined. THE ARITHMETICAL CHECK: 247 + 39 = 286, and the card itself gives „razem 286 l.” — it agrees to a single person, the reading confirmed by the reckoning. Dissenters the card does not name, and so the number of dissenters remains empty. Łazy belongs to the parish of ŁUKÓW, while the transcribed printed edition of Fr. B. Kumor (ABMK 39/1979, the file `kumor1787.json`) covers the parish of TRZEBIESZÓW — a second, independent check of this figure IS NOT TO BE HAD and must not be feigned. The figures have been carried over to the the 1787 census field of the village record.
  • V48 — The cartographic lines of the village of Łazy on the cards covered by my extract: ONE note — „V48 - Łazy.” on card 1 (card 1). On cards 1) and 673 there is no second cartographic note whatever (neither „MP”, nor „Ls”, „St.89”, „Per.”/„Perth.”, „Held.”, „Top.”). Checked on all five strips of cards 1) and 673.

The card-index entries

Every extract for this locality in the wording of the cards, year by year. One block is one occurrence: this person, in this year. At a collective item the same card text stands beside every person named — because the card names them together and they must not be separated. The hearths given at a collective item are an equal division among those named, not a reading.

T759 hearths2) cz. Jan (?) Łaskiego dymów 9card 1)
the forename stands on the card in the nominative („Jan”), although the surname is in the genitive, and the compiler of the card index himself furnished it with a question mark: „Jan (?)”. The doubt comes therefore FROM THE CARD, not from the reading — the writing itself is legible. That it is Jan Łaski, master of the hunt of Czerniechów, is confirmed by T90 (card 3) entry 2), T94 (card 2) entry 2), T89 (card 4) entry 3) and O83 (card 5).
Mysłowski
T752 hearths3) cz. Mysłowskich dymów 2card 1)
the card gives the surname alone in the plural („Mysłowskich”), without forenames — the holdings of several Mysłowscy counted together, 2 hearths. The reading is certain; the form „Mysłowski” (beside „Mystowski”) is attested in `SLOWNIK-OKOLICY.md`. This family does NOT return in any of the later years of Łazy (T89, T90, T94, T₀89) — in 1775 it is still here, afterwards it disappears.

between „cz.” and the forename stands a single sign in the shape of „&”, struck through with an oblique stroke; I do not resolve it and I do not guess [reading uncertain as to the meaning — the shape of the sign itself clearly visible]. It is not the abbreviation „sukc.”: in T75 Józef Rozwadowski appears without any designation of a deceased man, and only T90 (card 3) entry 4) and T94 (card 2) entry 6) say „sukces. Józefa Rozwadowskiego”.

the same entry also names: Łaski Krzysztof †2 persons on 2 hearths

A WOMAN: the second person of the entry is a widow whom the card names neither by forename nor separately by surname — there stands only „i wdowy”, and the surname only at the end, collectively („Łaskich”). Therefore the recorded form of the name = „wdowy”, and the surname is recorded as it stands on the card, in the masculine plural. The card does not say whose widow she is — I do not expand that. A CORRECTION ON THE CARD: after „i wdowy,” the compiler of the card index wrote one more word, „kowal” (with a flourish for the „Ł”), struck it out and carried it lower, into a separate entry 13 („tamże kowal Łaskiego dym 1”); that is why in this entry only two persons with a hearth each are counted.

Łaski
T751 hearth13) tamże kowal Łaskiego dym 1card 2)
„tamże” refers to the place of entry 12, that is to the mill. The hearth is the hearth of the SMITH, whom the card does not name by forename; „Łaskiego” is the owner of the holding, likewise without a forename. The same word „kowal” the compiler of the card index first wrote in entry 11 and struck it out there.
Łaski
T751 hearth14) tamże budynek Łaskiego Ł. O. dym 1card 2)
„tamże” as in entry 13. After the surname stand two letters with dots — „Ł. O.” — clearly written (the first has a shape identical with the „Ł” in „Łaskiego” of the same line), but UNRESOLVED: it is not known whether these are the initials of a second person or an abbreviation of a designation of the building [the reading of the letters certain, the meaning uncertain]. The card gives no forename of the owner. The word „budynek” is here the only designation of the buildings, too general to be set out in the breakdown of buildings.
Bziepowska
T751 hearth15) Bziepowskiej dym 1card 2)
A WOMAN and READING UNCERTAIN — the entry requires a decision from the owner. The surname stands in the genitive in the feminine form („-skiej”), without a forename and without the word „cz.” — the very last entry of the register. The ending „-powskiej” is legible beyond doubt; disputed are the first two letters: written as a tall ascender loop + a sign with a loop below the line, which read most literally gives „Bz-” („Bziepowskiej”), but such a form is not a known surname. A 6× magnification did not settle it [reading uncertain]. Related forms attested in `SLOWNIK-OKOLICY.md`: „Krzypowski”, „Szempowski”, „Stempowski”/„Stępowski” — none of them do I stretch onto this writing, I note them only as a lead. The surname is entered as it stands on the card, in the feminine form. The person does not return in any other year of Łazy.

„(chorąży ziemi łuk.)” is an addition written above the surname. The reading of the word „młyn” is confirmed by O83 from card 5 („młyn spustoszały, spalony”) and by T90 entry 8 and T94 entry 8 („przy młynie”). THE OFFICE: here and in T90 Antoni Łaski is standard-bearer of the Łuków Land, while O83 calls him land judge of Łuków — a discrepancy of the sources, not an error of reading
