It is worth setting beside the gradation which MP uses elsewhere: Łuków „miasto”, Zbuczyn and Trzebieszów „miasteczko”, Klimki (card 1) „do dzierżawy gręzowskiej”, and Kownatki simply „królewszczyzna”, a royal holding — without any indication of the estate complex (klucz) to which it belongs, although T90 and O83 of the same card say that Kownatki IS a separate lease („należą do niej tylko Kownatki”).

note: The siglum „Ls.89” is outside the list of sources — it does not enter the reckoning of hearths; and so this card is not in the reckoning of hearths at all. The extract gives not a single hearth. A WORD FROM THE WATCHED THREE — „karczma”: the reading is CERTAIN, the word written out IN FULL (not abbreviated), in a clean place in the line; checked with one magnification. It served me as the model by which I recognized the abbreviation „karcz.” in the Ls.89 of Klimki on card 1). There is here neither a brewery nor propination — a brewery is named only by T89 on card 1). ADDITIONS AND DELETIONS, rendered in the text with angle brackets: (a) above „Kajetana Jackowskiego” there is added between the lines „podczaszego kijowskiego” — in agreement with O83 on card 1); (b) the addition „obecnie trzyma to wś. Antoni Sobolewski”, taken in on the card by a brace; (c) above the word „sapowaty” an interlinear addition which I read as „piaszczysty” [READING UNCERTAIN — it can just as well be read „piaszczysta”/„pastwiska”; the addition is partly struck out]; (d) in the line about the meadows the word „łąki” is written a second time and STRUCK OUT, and after it „małe”. UNCERTAIN READINGS of this extract, listed separately: (1) „iure communicati[vo]” — the ending of the Latin formula runs onto the right-hand margin of the frame, the formula itself is legible; (2) „żwirkowaty” [reading uncertain — a word describing the land; „-owaty” and the opening „ż/z” are legible]; (3) the beginning of the line after „małe” is lost in the seam between strips c and d of the frame, hence the ellipsis before „w lasach”; the stitching of the two strips showed only that this line ends with the words „pod Stryjowem”; (4) THE PLACE NAMES — „Stryjowem”, „stryjewskiego”, „Piawka”, „Tołko”, „Żakowola”, „Zakrzew”, „Domanin” — ALL OF THEM [reading uncertain]; I have checked them in `SLOWNIK-OKOLICY.md` and none of them is there, so I have nothing to set them against and I record them as they stand on the card, without straining them towards present-day names (for example towards Kąkolewnica or Żakowola near Radzyń). Certain is only the adjective „kąkolewnickiego” beside the starosty. (5) „ciągną się” [reading uncertain — possibly „sięgają się”].

note: The continuation of the Ls.89 extract from card 2), taken up in the middle of a sentence: „…a tylko z jednej” (card 2) + „strony ⟨…⟩, w drugiej bór sosnowy” (card 3). It is this seam, and no number, that sets the two cards in order. READING UNCERTAIN: the word standing after „strony” I have NOT read, and I do not put a conjecture in its place. After one magnification six–seven signs are visible, with two clear rising loops towards the end and a termination in „-e”; „ocalałe” and „osiadłe” suggest themselves, but neither of them can I confirm from the frame, and so I leave a gap. The rest of the line („w drugiej bór sosnowy przy nim dość choiny młodej”) is legible; the word „choina” occurs by the same hand and in the same sense in the Ls of Łuków on card 9), which confirms the reading.

note: The siglum „St.89” is outside the list of sources (as on card 8) at Łuków) — it does not enter the reckoning of hearths, although it gives figures of population. the hearths figure null: this is a census of souls, not a hearth register. THE ARITHMETICAL CHECK COMES OUT TO A SINGLE PERSON AND CONFIRMS THE WHOLE READING OF THE FIGURES, and so I did not look at them a second time: householders 16 + 18 + 18 + 23 = 75, lodgers and servants 5 + 5 + 5 + 4 = 19, beggars 2 + 1 = 3; together 75 + 19 + 3 = 97, exactly what the total „97 l.” gives; independently the division by sex agrees as well: 46 m. + 51 k. = 97. In the line about the lodgers the last figure is reworked on the card (beneath „4 cór.” an earlier, struck-out writing is visible) — THE RECKONING DECIDES: with 4 the total comes out at exactly 97, with any other figure it does not, and so „4” holds. A NOTE FOR THE COMPARISON: St.89 gives 97 people, and S87 from card 1) — 138 (127 + 11 ż.). This is NOT a discrepancy to be smoothed over: these are two different sources and two different years, and St.89 most probably does not count Jews and counts otherwise than the parish census of 1787. Both figures I leave as they stand.

THE ARITHMETICAL CHECK COMES OUT AND CONFIRMS THE WHOLE READING OF THE LINE, so I did not look at it a second time: 1 dwór + 1 browar + 1 karczma + 13 chat o 1 gosp. + 3 chaty puste + 4 chaty o 1 gosp. = 23 = the figure given on the card („= 23 dymy”, underlined with a wavy stroke) and the same that T90 of the same card gives. In the field the breakdown of buildings both batches of cottages with one householder (13 + 4) are summed to 17, because the keys must add up to the hearths; the breakdown into 13 and 4 remains literally in the text of the extract. EMPTY COTTAGES COUNT TOWARDS THE HEARTHS — the card index proceeds in the same way at Izdebki; that is why the three empty cottages are in the breakdown of buildings, and not passed over. THE WORDS FROM THE WATCHED THREE — „brow.” = browar, a brewery, and „karcz.” = karczma, an inn: BOTH READINGS CERTAIN. They stand next to each other, in black ink, at the join of strips d and e of the frame; I read them from the stitching of both strips under magnification and in it both words are separated by commas, without running into their neighbours. The card does not name propination — neither here nor anywhere else in Kownatki. AN ADDITION: the forename „Kajetana” entered between the lines above the word „dożywotnia”; I render it with an angle bracket. READING UNCERTAIN: the last word before „= 23 dymy” I DID NOT READ and I supply no conjecture — after one fivefold magnification about eight characters are visible with the long crossbar of a „t” and the ending „-pie”; „na ostępie” and „następnie” suggest themselves, I can confirm neither. On the number of hearths this word has no bearing: the reckoning closes without it. The word „tamże” before „4 chat.” I read with certainty — the same hand uses it in the same sense at Izdebki („tamże chałupa pusta do mieszkania zdatna”).

The register of 1790 does not break the village into holdings: the whole village is one lease in the possession of Kajetan Jackowski. The figure „23” on the card is UNDERLINED; the reading is confirmed by the reckoning, for T89 of the same card arrives at the same 23 hearths, setting them out building by building. The interjection „należą do niej tylko Kownatki” is important: the Kownatki lease did not take in other villages, unlike the neighbouring Gręzówka lease, to which the card index assigns Klimki (card 1).

A description of the village from O83, section (IX). Without hearths. The line runs across the seam between strips c and d of the frame; it is visible in full on strip d. The office „podczaszy kijowski” recurs as an interlinear addition in Ls.89 on card 2), which confirms the reading.
In this extract the card gives the surname and the office alone, without the forename; the forename „Kajetan” is carried by T90 and T89 of the same card and by both extracts on cards 2) and 667, but here I do not add it — I leave as much as this line says.
