Hearth Tax Registers of the Łuków Land 1775–1794
Wólka Świątkowa
Parish of Łuków, łukowski county.
Dear reader, remember that this is an AI study, that it may contain errors; treat it as indicative and verify it for yourself.
Offices: Potocki Kajetan (starost of Dymir (starosta dymiński) [reading uncertain])
Extracts from outside the registers
Records under sigla which the card index does not expand. They give no hearths, so they enter no total.
note: The siglum of Perthées, standing at the beginning of the second line of the card, was HEAVILY STRUCK OUT by the compiler with a single horizontal stroke across the whole sign. The letter itself is legible despite the striking out — the same loop „P.” as in the cartographic line of Wólka Domaszewska on card 1). No form of the name stands beside it: after the striking out the line runs on already under the siglum „Held.”. THE STRIKING OUT I DO NOT RESOLVE: it may mean that Perthées does not record this village (as „P. niema” at Cieszkowizna, card), and it may mean that the compiler mistook the siglum and corrected it to „Held.”. A siglum from outside the list of eight, so it does not enter the reckoning of hearths.
note: The cartographic line: Heldensfeld's map records the village as „Wulka Świątkowa” — with „u” in the first part, unlike the heading of the card („Wólka Świątkowa”). The siglum and the name are clean, without corrections; they stand in the same line as the struck-out „P.”, immediately after it. A siglum from outside the list of eight, so it does not enter the reckoning of hearths. The extract gives no hearths and no person.
note: The third line of the card, a separate siglum „Top.” (as at Cieszkowizna, card) — from outside the list of eight, so it does not enter the reckoning of hearths. It gives the name alone in the form „Wulka Świątkowa”, identical with Heldensfeld's form from the line above, and — unlike the „Top.” of Cieszkowizna — it adds NO description of the situation. The extract gives no hearths and no person. The line stands on the seam between strips b and c of the frame; read on both strips, in agreement.
note: The last line of the card, below T89; the siglum „MP” from outside the list of eight, so it does not enter the reckoning of hearths — just as at Łuków (card 8): „MP - miasto - siedziba starostwa łukowskiego.”), Zbuczyn and Trzebieszów. THE CONTENT: one qualifying word — „królewszczyzna”, that is a royal estate. It agrees with the „dobra król.” of T90, the „wieś królewska” of O83 and T89 and the „dymów król.” of T75; this is the fifth, independent confirmation of the royal character of the village. THE NAME IN THIS LINE runs „Świętkowa Wólka” — with „ę”, and not „ą” as in all the remaining lines of this card („Świątkowa”); the vowel, viewed in the native frame, has a distinct tail on the right-hand side of the closed loop, that is „ę”. The forms I DO NOT unify — I record it as it stands, and I note the difference [reading uncertain as to this one vowel]. The extract gives no hearths and no person.
note: The siglum „Ls.89” (the lustration of 1789) from outside the list of sources — it does not enter the reckoning of hearths, just as at Kot Wiśniowski (card „Ls.89”), Trzebieszów („Lsp 89”) and Łuków (card 9) „Ls”). The abbreviation „ws.” = wieś. After the name of the village there stand on the card TWO commas side by side — so in the source. The word „należąca” is broken between the lines („na-” / „leżąca”). UNCERTAIN READINGS, listed separately: (1) AN UNREAD WORD standing immediately after „leżąca.”, at the end of the second line. I examined it at five- and elevenfold magnification, in the native resolution of strip b. Only the outline is certain: a tall loop (h / k / l / b), then a small closed „e”, then a distinct „w”, then „e” again, at the end an „r” with a small hook and a full stop. That gives „hewer” or „kewer” — neither of them is a Polish word and neither do I stretch to anything known. I DO NOT GUESS: I record it as unread and report it to the owner of the work. It is neither the surname of a possessor (the extract names no one) nor a figure. (2) „do urodzenie żyta i gryki zdatne” — the ending of the word „urodzeni-” is contracted and I do not decide between „-nie” and „-nia”; correct Polish would be „do urodzenia”, but I do not bend the reading to correctness [reading uncertain — the ending alone]. (3) „zarośle” — so it stands, in the singular, not „zarośla”. THE CONTENT: the extract confirms the belonging of the village to the Gręzówka leasehold (just as T89 and T90 do) and describes the land — sandy, fit for rye and buckwheat, without forest, with scrub alone. Neither an inn nor a brewery nor propination does this extract mention.
spellings on the cards: Wólka Świątkowa, Wulka Świątkowa, Świątkowa Wólka, Świątkowa Wola, Świątkowa, Świętkowa Wólka
district of łukowski · parish of Łuków · cards 2
a royal village („królewszczyzna” [MP]), on a life lease to Potocki, starost of Dymir (starosta dymiński) [O83 (IX), card]; in the registers of 1789 and 1790 described as belonging to the Gręzówka leasehold (Gręzówka). Hearths: 11 in 1775 [T75, „dymów król.”], 15 in 1789 [T89] and 15 in 1790 [T90, with the addition that one of them came in after the year 1789]. The buildings in 1789: an inn and 14 cottages with 1 householder = 15 hearths — the inn is here the only building singled out by name, of a manor house there is in this village none at all. Population 1787: 105 persons, among them 8 Jews [S87]. The land sandy, fit for rye and buckwheat, there is no forest, only scrub [Ls.89, card 2)]. The name in Heldensfeld „Wulka Świątkowa”; the siglum of Perthées beside that line was struck out by the compiler.
| Year | Source | Entries | Hearths |
|---|---|---|---|
| T75 | Hearth tax register 1775 | 1 | 11 |
| T89 | Hearth tax register 1789 | 1 | 15 |
| T90 | Hearth tax register 1790 | 1 | 15 |
Without an extract for 1794 — no card of this village carries that tariff. It is a missing extract in the card index, not a gap in the numbering of the cards.
Caveats on the years' registers (3)
What the compiler noted beside the entry itself, and what the table above does not show:
- T75 — A one-line and single-entry extract: the register of 1775 gives the name alone, the qualification („król.” = królewska, royal) and one figure of hearths. The card's total is at the same time the only entry, so an arithmetical check settles nothing here — the reading of the figure is confirmed by a separate magnification (see the note to the entry). There is no breakdown of the buildings and no surname in this extract.
- T89 — One entry, and it is itself the total: the card gives „= 15 dymów;” (underlined) and sums nothing beyond that. The breakdown of the buildings agrees with the number of hearths: 1 inn + 14 cottages with 1 householder = 15. The figure agrees with T90 (15 there as well). In the whole T89 of this village there is neither a manor house, nor a brewery, nor a mill, nor a grange — an inn and cottages alone; this is a village without a lordly seat, which agrees with its royal character.
- T90 — A two-line extract, written in blue ink, of a single entry — the register does not break the royal village up into holdings. The card writes no separate line „Razem”: the figure 15 given (underlined) is at once the total and the only entry. There is no breakdown of the buildings in T90. The words „propinacja”, „browar”, „karczma” do not occur in this extract.
The card-index entries
Every extract for this locality in the wording of the cards, year by year. One block is one occurrence: this person, in this year. At a collective item the same card text stands beside every person named — because the card names them together and they must not be separated. The hearths given at a collective item are an equal division among those named, not a reading.
