Hearth Tax Registers of the Łuków Land 1775–1794

Żdżary

Parish of Łuków, łukowski county.

Dear reader, remember that this is an AI study, that it may contain errors; treat it as indicative and verify it for yourself.

Extracts from outside the registers

Records under sigla which the card index does not expand. They give no hearths, so they enter no total.

P.card 1)P. Zdżary, czyli Zdziary,
note: The siglum „P.” — a single letter with a full stop, FROM OUTSIDE THE LIST of the eight sigla, so it does not enter the reckoning of hearths. It stands in the same line as „Held.” and together with it forms a note on the form of the name on the maps: „P. Zdżary, czyli Zdziary, Held. Zdżary.”. The expansion „P.” = Perthées (the map of Karol de Perthées) is probable, since in the card index the same map is at times marked „Per.” and „Perth.”, but THE CARD ITSELF DOES NOT EXPAND IT and I do not expand it — I record the siglum as it stands. The extract gives neither hearths nor any person. THE SIGNIFICANCE: the note preserves two forms of the village's name side by side — „Zdżary” and „Zdziary”; the second form is repeated by MP on the same card and by the heading line of card 2 (card 2).
Held.card 1)Held. Zdżary.
note: The siglum „Held.” — FROM OUTSIDE THE LIST of the eight sigla, it does not enter the reckoning of hearths. The reading of the siglum is certain (checked at a fourfold magnification: H-e-l-d with a full stop). The note closes the same line which begins with „P.”; it gives the form of the name alone — „Zdżary” — without hearths and without persons. The expansion („Heldensfeld”, the topographic map of Anton Mayer von Heldensfeld) is probable in this card index, but the card does not give it and I do not supply it.
MPcard 1)MP- Zdżary czyli Zdziary - starostwo Łukowskie;
note: The siglum „MP” FROM OUTSIDE THE LIST of sources — it does not enter the reckoning of hearths, just as at Trzebieszów (card ad1), Zbuczyn (card 2), Łuków (card 8) and Gręzówka (card 2). The reading is certain, the line short and cleanly written. The note gives two forms of the name („Zdżary czyli Zdziary”) and the belonging of the village to the STAROSTY OF ŁUKÓW — in agreement with T90, T89, V48 and O83 on the same card. Without hearths and without persons. It is the LAST line written on this card; below it the card is empty.
Ls.89card 3)Ls.89. To wś. Zdżar, do star. łukowskiego, grunta piaszczyste - wś. ma spór z Jedlanką dominikańską o grunt w miejscu zwanym „nad Wawkoserem”.
note: The siglum „Ls.89” (the lustration of 1789) FROM OUTSIDE THE LIST of the eight sigla — it does not enter the reckoning of hearths; the same siglum stands at Kot Wiśniowski (card) and Gręzówka (cards 2)–657). The extract gives NOT ONE HEARTH and NOT ONE SURNAME: the hearths figure null, the list of persons empty. Three lines, the hand clean. THE CONTENT: it repeats the belonging of the village to the starosty of Łuków (in agreement with T90, T89, O83 and MP from card 1), characterises the land as SANDY and records a BOUNDARY DISPUTE of the village with „Jedlanką dominikańską” over ground in a place called — here the card quotes in inverted commas — „nad Wawkoserem”. THE READINGS: (1) „To wś. Zdżar” — the opening word, the „T” with a crossbar as in the sigla T89/T90, the reading certain. (2) „z Jedlanką dominikańską” — both forms checked at three- and fourfold magnification, the reading certain; Jedlanka is a village of the same neighbourhood, present in the card index, and the attribute „dominikańska” ties it to the Dominicans — the same to whom the neighbouring Zofibór belongs (cards 1)–761). This conclusion, however, the card does not draw, and I do not add it to the data; I note it only here. (3) THE NAME OF THE PLACE IN INVERTED COMMAS — „nad Wawkoserem” — viewed at an eightfold magnification and EVEN SO LEFT UNRESOLVED: certain are the ending „-koserem” and the word „nad”, whereas the first two–three letters run together into one tall loop and can be read also as „Kraw-”, „Kręw-” or „Hew-”; the candidates which I do not confirm: „Krawkoserem”, „Hewkoserem”. [reading uncertain] — I DO NOT GUESS and I report it for the owner's decision. The card takes this name into inverted commas, so it is a quotation from the lustration and not a formulation of the editor of the card index.

Without an extract for 1775 and 1794 — no card of this village carries that tariff. It is a missing extract in the card index, not a gap in the numbering of the cards.

Caveats on the years' registers (1)

What the compiler noted beside the entry itself, and what the table above does not show:

  • T89 — THE CONTINUATION OF T89 from card 1 (card 1), marked on the card with the abbreviation „c.d.”. This is not a register of hearths, but a TABLE OF THE POPULATION of a royal village — for that reason all the entries have the hearths figure null and the list of persons empty: the card names not a single surname, it gives solely the numbers of persons in groups. the total from the card is null, because the total which the card gives („69 głów”) is a total of PEOPLE, not of hearths, and enters into no reckoning of hearths. The name of the village is written here „Zdziary” — a variant of the spelling, left literally. THE COMPARISON WITH THE 1787 CENSUS: S87 on card 1 gives 97 l. + 16 ż. = 113 l., while this table of 1789 gives 62 + 7 = 69 głów. THE DIFFERENCE IS ENORMOUS (113 against 69) and I DO NOT SMOOTH IT OVER: these are two different sources, two years apart, counting most probably different things (the diocesan census of 1787 covers all the parishioners of a given village, the register table of 1789 — the population taken in by the hearths of a royal village). Both readings are confirmed by the cards' own totals, so neither of the figures do I correct. The discrepancy I report as a matter for the decision of the owner of the work.
