Hearth Tax Registers of the Łuków Land 1775–1794
Szczygły Dolne
In the card index under the name Szczygły. Parish of Łuków, łukowski county.
Dear reader, remember that this is an AI study, that it may contain errors; treat it as indicative and verify it for yourself.
Card 3 is missing from the card index (numbering within the village). THE GAP IS CONFIRMED ON THE CARDS, it is not an error of reading: the numbers in the headings read without difficulty and run „1)” on card 1), „2)” on card 2), „4)” on card 4), „5)” on card 5), „6)” on card 6), „7)” on card 7). A card with the number „3)” is not in the card index, and the cards follow one another in the card index without a break, so it is not a card passed over in the going through of the card index, but the absence of the card itself. There are no duplicates (the same card noted twice in the card index) in this village; the shred of another card with the figure „4)”, visible at the top of cards 1) and 716, lies ABOVE the edge of our card, on a card from another place in the pile, and it has nothing to do with the numbering of Szczygły. ¶ WHAT IS MISSING. The set of extracts which the surviving cards give is complete as to the years: S87, V48 and T75 on card 1, T90 on card 2, the addition of T90 about the appurtenance of Sarnów and the whole of T94 on card 4, T89 on card 5, O83 (IX), the addition of T94 about the appurtenance of Sarnów and T₀89 on card 6, T₀89 cont. on card 7. No siglum is missing and no extract breaks off without a continuation. ¶ WHETHER THE TOTALS ARE THEREBY INCOMPLETE — THEY ARE NOT. Each of the four hearth years closes with a total of its own on a surviving card, and each of those totals agrees to a single hearth with the sum of the recorded entries: T75 „Razem dymów 14” (card 1), T90 „Razem 15 dymów” (card 2), T94 „Razem – 15 dymów” (card 4), T89 „Razem 15 d.” (card 5). Nothing indicates that any of these lists was continued on the missing card 3. ¶ The place of the gap in the order of the card index falls BETWEEN T90 (the end of card 2) and the addition of T90 about Sarnów and the register T94 (the beginning of card 4). Card 3 therefore carried most probably either extracts from outside this set (such as MP, Ls.89, St.89, Perth. or Rew. at other villages), or material which the surviving cards do not announce. The only trace which may remain of it is this, that the addition of T90 about the four hearths of the appurtenance of Sarnów stands already AFTER the total „Razem 15 dymów” — it cannot be ruled out that the beginning of that addition was on card 3; the text on card 4) is, however, a whole, closed sentence and gives no evidence of a breaking off.
Offices: Szlubowski Józef (surveyor and civil-military commissioner of the Krasnystaw district (miernik i komisarz cywilno-wojskowy powiatu krasnostawskiego) · deputy starost of Krasnystaw (podstarości krasnostawski)
Propination, inns, breweries: Szczygielski Józef (brewery, inn, propination); Szczygielski Maciej (propination); Szczygielski Wojciech (brewery, inn, propination)
Extracts from outside the registers
Records under sigla which the card index does not expand. They give no hearths, so they enter no total.
note: the note stands below the T₀89 c.d. extract, right at the left margin, but it HAS NO siglum beside it — I do not therefore enter it into the reckoning of hearths. In shape it answers to the `MP` notes of other villages (Łuków, card 8): „MP - miasto - siedziba starostwa łukowskiego.”), but the siglum „MP” is not on the card and I do not supply it. The abbreviation after „wś –” I read as „osiedz.” [reading uncertain]. The note gives the parish of TUCHOWICZ, whereas the headings of all six cards of the village and the addition above the siglum T₀89 on card 6) give the parish of ŁUKÓW — I leave the discrepancy, I do not smooth it away
spellings on the cards: Szczygły (Dolne i Górne), Szczygły
district of łukowski · parish of Łuków · cards 1), 2), 4), 5), 6), 7)
a noble village, the more considerable hereditary holding belongs to Krasiński, chamberlain of Różan (podkomorzy rożański) [O83 (IX), card 6)]; propination at the holding of the successors of Maciej Szczygielski [T₀89, card 6)], while in T89 (card 5) that same holding is set out as 1 manor house, 1 inn and 1 brewery = 3 hearths. Four hearths in the village belong to the appurtenance of the grange of Sarnów, the estate of Józef Szlubowski [T90, T89, T94]

Caveats on the years' registers (3)
What the compiler noted beside the entry itself, and what the table above does not show:
- T89 — T89 does not name the holding of the Rzymowskis, which both T90 and T94 have; it has instead one Sosnowski more. Before the list stands the cross-reference „str. 155.” to a page of the register
- T₀89 — the list is set out on the card in two columns: 3–6 on the left, 7–11 on the right. Beside each of them runs vertically, along the right-hand edge of the column, one common brace with the addition „nie wys. 10 kor.” — it covers therefore entries 3–6 and 7–11, and does not cover 1 and 2. Above the siglum „par. Łuków” is added above the line, and the word „T.” standing beside it has been struck out
- T94 — the column of figures on the right: the first line „3 dymy;”, the rest repeat the distributive sign „ i– ”; it is transcribed literally in the text of the extract. The T94 list repeats, person for person and in order, the T90 list from card 2), transposing only entries 1–4
The card-index entries
Every extract for this locality in the wording of the cards, year by year. One block is one occurrence: this person, in this year. At a collective item the same card text stands beside every person named — because the card names them together and they must not be separated. The hearths given at a collective item are an equal division among those named, not a reading.

The card names 2 persons and 3 hearths, without dividing how many fall to each — „po 1 dymie” does not stand beside this entry. The number of hearths is certain: the register's own total confirms it. We do not supply the division.

the surname „Mościckich” added above the line and underlined. The abbreviation „sukces.” stands once, before the first forename; that it concerns Wojciech alone is confirmed by T94 on card 4), where the same three stand in the order „Adama; Kazimierza i sukc. Wojciecha – Mościckich”

the forename „Mikołaja” is struck out on the card — I do not enter the person
on the card „Sebestjana”
the entry thoroughly corrected: „Adama” was struck out together with the surname („Rozwadowskich”), and so were the words „po 1 dymie”; the figure at the end has been reworked. After the deletion one person remains. Józef's surname is given by T94 on card 4) („8) cz. Józefa Rozwadowskiego — 1”), which repeats the whole list of T90 in the same order. I take the number of hearths to be 1: only so does the card's total „Razem 15 dymów” come out, and T94 too has 1 hearth here (the figure „2” as written is a remnant left after the correction)
the same entry also names: Zaleski Kazimierz2 persons on 1 hearth
two persons on one hearth — the card gives „dym 1” for the whole holding
the same entry also names: Zaleski Adam2 persons on 1 hearth
two persons on one hearth — the card gives „dym 1” for the whole holding
a separate addition of T90 on card 4, outside the list of ten holdings closed on card 2 with the total „Razem 15 dymów”; it concerns the hearths which in Szczygły belong to the estate complex (klucz) of the village of Sarnów
the surname corrected on the card, the letters after the „S” reworked — I read „Szlubowskiego” [reading uncertain]
