About the data
The figures come from the PESEL register kept by the Minister of Digital Affairs and describe the state as of 20 January 2026. They cover living people, by their current surname. Surnames borne by a single person in the whole country are not given.
The breakdown by voivodeship covers people with a registered permanent residence. People without such registration, including those living abroad, are not in it — which is why the sum of the voivodeships is lower than the figure for the whole register. Where a single person in a voivodeship bears the surname, the list gives no number: the table then shows “0–1”, and the sums count only the numbers given.
“Per 100,000” is the number of people with the surname per 100,000 people of the same sex (or of both sexes together) included in the list for the voivodeship — the same register and the same day, so the voivodeships can be compared. The shades on the map follow the natural breaks between the values of the sixteen voivodeships (the Jenks method), separately for each surname; in the “number of people” view the area of a circle is proportional to the number of people.
In the register the masculine and feminine forms are two separate surnames. The page pairs them by a rule: -ski, -cki, -dzki and -y ↔ -ska, -cka, -dzka and -a; surnames that do not change (Nowak, Pióro) have one form for both sexes. Other spellings of the same surname, for example without Polish letters, are listed separately — the register counts them apart.
There are no lists of surnames by district or commune among the PESEL resources on dane.gov.pl, so the area around Łuków and Siedlce is shown through the two voivodeships in which it lies today. The present distribution does not prove where a family comes from: the migrations of the twentieth century spread surnames across the whole country.
