localities in the entry the village of Tchórzew Plewki
The noble (Nob.) Wawrzyniec Jasiński, son of the late noble (Nob.) Kazimierz, and brother german and natural successor of the late noble (Nob.) Paweł Jasiński, who died without issue – alongside the other co-successors – being of sound mind and body, deposed that in his own name and in the name of the nobles (Nob.) Franciszka, wife of Stanisław Ługowski, and Marcjanna and Helena, maidens, the said Jasińskie, **his stepdaughters**, for whom he stands surety, he gives a quittance to the noble (Nob.) Piotr Jastrzębski called Piasecki and to his successors for the sum of thirty Polish złoty – inscribed by the late noble (Nob.) Andrzej Ługowski to the said late noble (Nob.) Paweł Jasiński, the deponent's brother, by way of mortgage upon certain estates lying in the hereditary estate of the village of Tchórzew Plewki, before the present records on the Monday before the feast of St Andrew the Apostle in the Year of Our Lord 170… [the reading of the year incomplete] – and now in fact and effectively paid out to him, the deponent, by that party quitted as the perpetual acquirer of those estates. He gives a quittance and cancels that inscription.
notes and marginalia **Revision of the reading (scan 021, f. 17v, the fourth paragraph from the top of the left-hand column).** The manuscript: „N. Laurentius Jasinski **olim** N. Casimiri filius, olim vero N. Pauli Jasinski **steriliter vita functi** frater germanus et Successor naturalis, erga alios Consuccessores… Quia Ipse Suo et G. **Franciscae** Stanislai Ługowski Consortis, **Marcjannae** et **Helenae** Virginum, p[rae]f[a]t[arum] Jasinskich **filiastrarum suarum** nomine…”. Three things have been corrected:
1. **The given name of Ługowski's wife: Franciszka, not Marianna.** This agrees with entries 412–414 (22 April 1743), where the same woman appears as **Franciszka Jasińska, daughter of the late Jan Jasiński, wife of Stanisław Ługowski**. The discrepancy noted earlier, „Marianna czy Franciszka”, **disappears** — it was an error of reading, not a contradiction in the source.
2. **The third of the maidens is Marcjanna, not a second Marianna.** The manuscript has „Marcianne”; so do the PTG tags for scan 021 („Marcjanna Jasińska”) and entry 413.
3. **„filiastrae” means stepdaughters, not brother's daughters.** Wawrzyniec is their **stepfather**, not their paternal uncle. Nor are they Paweł's daughters — Paweł died **without issue** („steriliter vita functi”), as the same line states outright. Their father was, according to entries 412–414, **the late Jan Jasiński**; the present entry does not give his name, and for that reason no father has been recorded for them in the person records. The sisters' uterine brother, Ludwik Osmulski (entry 412), attests to a further marriage of their mother.

localities in the entry the estate of Tchórzew Plewki
The noble (Nob.) Wawrzyniec Jasiński, being of sound mind and body, deposed that he gives a quittance to the nobles (Nob.) Maciej and Anna Borkowski, husband and wife, and likewise to Piotr Jastrzębski, and to their successors, for the suit and official action brought and lodged with the present office on account of the insult done to him, of sundry charges, of an assault and of the damages inflicted; further, for the protestations, the relations, the first decrees and the decree of condescension issued by the present office on the ground of the estate of Tchórzew Plewki and lodged with the records of the present office on the Monday after Reminiscere Sunday in Lent of the current year by way of oblation; as also for the penalties adjudged by that same decree together with a sum of six Polish złoty for damages – and this because they were in fact paid out to him by the parties quitted according to the tenor of that same decree of condescension. Those decrees, the protestations and the relations he cancels.
notes and marginalia A note by the clerk: „Ignarus personae litterarum” – the deponent cannot write. The reading has been verified afresh against the original and against the corrected tags for scan 038: the text plainly has „tum Petrum Jastrzębski”, that is Piotr JASTRZĘBSKI (earlier read wrongly as Jasiński – the deponent is Wawrzyniec Jasiński, which was the source of the mistake). The decree of condescension was lodged by oblation on the Monday after Reminiscere Sunday 1743 = 11 March 1743.

notes and marginalia Beneath the entry an autograph signature: „Jozef Jastrzebski”.
**Revision of the reading („olim” instead of „et”).** The original translation read the word before the father's given name as „et” and so made Andrzej the **son** of Kazimierz. In this chancery the abbreviation **„ol.” (olim)** is written as an „o” with a stroke through the stem and closely resembles „et”; the grammatical case decides the matter — the genitive with „filio” means **„to the son [of someone]”**, not „and to the son”. The direction of the filiation is confirmed by as many as eight entries (4, 643, 644, 645, 839, 1168, 1366, 1564), in which Andrzej Radomyski Sędek is the **son of the late Kazimierz**. The pattern has been checked against the manuscript: entry 246 (scan 56-043, „Antonio Domaszowski … **Casimiri filio**”) and entry 302 (scan 56-051, „Stephano Jasienski **ol. N. Pauli filio**”).

A rare clause: the donation covers estates encumbered with a mortgage, and the redemption falls upon the donor.

Kazimierz [Okniński], the sons, and to their successors he gives and donates his hereditary estate falling to him, that is the whole and entire inheritance share formerly called Gotaszczyzna [uncertain reading], in the waste homestead, the gardens, orchards, arable, fields, meadows, woods, forests, groves, thickets, brushwood and in everything else that is adjacent to that same inheritance share, lying in the hereditary village of Jastrzębie Dadzibogi [uncertain reading], and standing in mortgage — out of which mortgage the present donees shall themselves be bound to redeem it — with everything he gives and donates. He consented to intromission, governing himself by the common law, and this under the land-law damages, for which he appoints the present court.
[The deponent] unlettered.
notes and marginalia In the margin of this entry an addition concerning the right to the inheritance share as against a brother has been written in a small hand [uncertain reading – the note is written above the line and partly smudged]. The name of the inheritance share „Gotaszczyzna” and the name of the village „Jastrzębie Dadzibogi” have been read with uncertainty – the majuscule of the name of the share is ambiguous (G/S). The nobles (Nob.) Jakub, son of the late noble (Nob.) Zofia née Borkowska, daughter of the noble (Nob.) [Jan] Borkowski and lawful wife of the noble (Nob.) Antoni Jastrzębski, their sister german, and to her successors they give and donate their estates – the wife her paternal hereditary estates, and the husband those which he holds towards the noble (Nob.) Marianna, the daughter begotten with that same wife, as to her portion, and for whose ratification he stands surety – all and each of them: in the homesteads, in the newly erected building, the gardens, the arable, the meadows, the woods, the forests, the thickets, the rivers, the streams and in all other appurtenances and appendages of those same estates, keeping back and excepting nothing for themselves, situated and lying in the hereditary village of Borki Kosy, with everything. They consented to intromission forthwith, governing themselves by the law of this court. Moreover the father, the noble (Nob.) Jakub Chromiński, binds himself by a statutory letter to confirm the present inscription as to the portion of the daughter named above, when she shall come to the dowry due to her – and this under the land-law damages. The present court.
notes and marginalia **A discrepancy set down openly:** the manuscript calls Zofia both the donor (the wife of Jakub Chromiński) and the donee sister (the wife of Antoni Jastrzębski); the PTG tags for scan 57-035 note only one „Zofia Borkowska Chromińska”, and one of the Borkowski siblings figures in them as „? Borkowski” (the given name was not read by the indexer). The repetition of the given name has not been „poprawiano” – it has not been corrected away. The mention of a **newly erected building** (aedificium noviter exstructum) is rare in this register. The father's undertaking to confirm the inscription later „listem statutowym”, when the daughter comes to her dowry, secures her rights – a typical protective construction.

The noble (Nob.) Marcjanna née Dzierżanowska, by her first marriage the wife of the late well-born (Gen.) Franciszek Rudnicki, by her second and present marriage the wife of the noble (Nob.) Jakub Jastrzębski — by reason of the absence of her husband, who lies laid low by sickness, with the assistance of the well-born (Gen.) Franciszek Borkowski, and freely — being of sound mind and body, deposed that she gives a quittance to the nobles (Nob.) Stanisław and Kazimierz Pogonowski — sons of the late noble (Nob.) Michał Pogonowski, and he [was] the son of the noble (Nob.) **Mateusz Pogonowski** [in the manuscript „quondam Mathiae”; see the notes] — and to their successors, for the suit and official action brought and lodged with the present office on account of the committing of acts of violence against the late noble (Nob.) Adam Dzierżanowski, her paternal cousin [uncertain reading: „sui Fratris Patruelis”, and possibly also „Parentis” — see the notes], by the said persons and by **that same noble (Nob.) Mateusz Pogonowski, their grandfather**, as the present parties quitted; further for the condemnation obtained in that matter, as also for all and each of the claims lasting up to this day and arisen upon that occasion — and this by reason of the settlement concluded between them and of the satisfaction rendered; and the protestation against those same parties quitted and the condemnation she cancels.
notes and marginalia The entry passes from scan 57-036 (f. 35r) to 57-037 (f. 35v); it is joined into one item. The second entry of that day made by the same Marcjanna Jastrzębska, deposing under a substitute assistance by reason of her husband's sickness (cf. 1265, 1268). **The filiation and the given name have been checked three times on scan 57-036 (enlargements of single words).** The manuscript reads: „N.N. Stanislaum et Casimirum Pogonowskie, **ol. N. Michaelis quondam Mathiae Pogonowski filij, filios**”, and further on: „per praefatos et **N. Mathaeum Pogonowski**, modernos Quietatos”.
**The reading adopted: Maciej and Mateusz are ONE person — Mateusz Pogonowski, the father of Michał and the grandfather of both quitted brothers.** Four independent reasons speak for it:
1. **The arithmetic of the entry.** The formula „per praefatos **et** N. Mathaeum Pogonowski, **modernos Quietatos**” presupposes **three** offenders and three parties quitted, whereas the heading names by name two brothers. The third is precisely that Mateusz — and not a fourth Pogonowski nowhere introduced.
2. **The want of „olim” at the second mention.** Beside „N. Mathaeum Pogonowski” there is no sign of death, and so that person **is alive** and could have committed an act of violence in 1744.
3. **„Quondam” in this chancery does not prove death, but marks the generation of the grandfather.** The pattern „ol. [ojciec] quondam [dziad] filii filios” recurs three times in a single enumeration of entry no. 1575 („ol. Joannis quondam Alberti filij; ol. Gregorij quondam Nicolai; ol. Joannis quondam Laurentij **filij filij**”), where „quondam” is solely a link in the chain of the generations. It is the context that means death there, and not the word itself. The formula in entry 1284 is of the same build, and so **it does not settle that the father of Michał is not alive**.
4. **The grammatical case decides.** The genitive **„Mathiae”** is ambiguous (the genitive of *Matthias* is Mathiae, that of *Matthaeus* — Mathaei, and the two clusters are alike in this hand), but **the accusative „Mathaeum” is diagnostic**: the accusative of *Matthaeus* is Mathaeum, the accusative of *Matthias* is Mathiam. Since the manuscript has **Mathaeum**, the name is **Mateusz**, and the writing of the genitive „Mathiae” is an ordinary simplification of the clerk.
**The skeleton of the kinship is withal certain:** *filios* (accusative plural) refers to Stanisław and Kazimierz, *Michaelis … filij* (genitive singular) to their father, and *Mathiae Pogonowski* to the father of Michał. The line of the generations runs **Mateusz → Michał → Stanisław and Kazimierz**, and the parties quitted are **the two brothers and their grandfather**. The earlier wording of the translation („urodzonego Michała, niegdyś Macieja Pogonowskiego, synów”) allowed of the wrong reading, as though the brothers were the sons of two different persons, and therefore the sentence has been recast.
**An alternative reading, noted and rejected:** were „quondam” to be read as a sign of death, the father of Michał would be a dead person, and „N. Mathaeum Pogonowski” — a fourth kinsman nowhere introduced. The PTG tag for scan 57-036 notes one of the persons as **„Maciej lub Mateusz Pogonowski”**, and so the indexer had the same doubt as to the given name; **the discrepancy has not been smoothed over**.
**The problem of the pair of names is of a systemic character** — see the note „Matthias czy Matthaeus (Maciej czy Mateusz)” in the sheet „O źródle i metodzie”.
**A revision after a fresh reading of scan 57-036 (at the User's request):** (1) **The filiation of the Pogonowski confirmed in full** — in the manuscript: „NN. Stanislaum et Casimirum Pogonowskie ol. N. Michaelis quondam Mathiae Pogonowski filij filios”, and below the accusative **„N. Mathaeum Pogonowski”** (an enlargement of the beginning of the 5th line); the reading **Mateusz → Michał → Stanisław and Kazimierz** and the identity of „Mathiae”/„Mathaeum” stand in force. (2) **Adam Dzierżanowski is dead in the manuscript**: „intentata **ol.** N. Adami Dzierżanoski” — the abbreviation „ol.” has the same build as in „ol. N. Michaelis” two lines above; it was previously overlooked. The manuscript does not say whether the death had any connection with the act of violence — **nothing has been presumed**. (3) **The degree of the kinship**: the earlier „jej krewnego” was a generalisation. The manuscript: „sui Fratris Pa[…]is”. The first word is *Fratris* (after the initial, two low letters before the tall „t”: F-ra-tris, not Pa-tris). The second word ends in a tall letter with a loop before „-is”, which answers to the „l” in **„Patruelis”** — *frater patruelis* = **paternal cousin**, a term used by this chancery many times (entries 1770, 1806, 1843, 1942, 1961, 2039). The alternative reading **„Parentis”** (the tall letter = „t”) would give the phrase „sui Fratris Parentis” — grammatically lame, but not to be excluded; **the reading has been marked as uncertain and both variants recorded**. (4) Franciszek Rudnicki, the first husband, likewise with the abbreviation „ol.” („primarum ol. N. Francisci Rudnicki”) — in accordance with entries 60, 61, 539 of the 1743 volume, where Marcjanna appears as his widow; „zmarłego” has been added. (5) The sigla: Marcjanna — **N.**; Franciszek Borkowski (the assistant) — **G.**; Stanisław and Kazimierz — **NN.**; the late Michał, Mateusz, the late Adam Dzierżanowski — **N.** The formula beside Borkowski: „in assistentia G. Francisci Borkowski et spontanee” — the assistance and the free will. (6) A fragment of the formula after „modernos Quietatos” that has not been read with certainty (the end of the 5th line: „Actione concep…” / the beginning of the 6th: „…nis violentiae attentationis instituta et intentata”) — it concerns the designation of the action, not the persons; it has been rendered generally, as hitherto.

The debt was paid off not by the original debtor but by the acquirer of his estate – the usual passing of the burden together with the ground. The persons agree with the PTG tags for scans 57-039 and 57-040.

[The deponents] unlettered.
notes and marginalia A clear distinction between **the double and the simple penalty** (poena duplex / simplex) of eleven marks apiece: the court held both parties guilty, but one of them in a double degree. The penalty of the tower was laid upon both parties – the sixth mention of it in the 1744 volume. The date of the decree: 19 August 1743 (a Monday) – the same session as in entries 1172, 1183, 1283, 1306.

notes and marginalia The given name of the elder of the Jastrzębski is cut off at the spine of the binding; the PTG tag for scan 57-041 gives him as „? Jastrzębski”, so that for the indexer too he remained unknown – the gap has not been supplied.
