„Persons (different given names)” means: different combinations of a given name with a byname, not persons proved to have existed. Two namesakes from one family merge here into a single item, and the acts give nothing to tell them apart. An entry naming several families stands beside each of them — because the record names them together, and they must not be separated.

This item certainly merges several persons: under this given name the acts name 2 different parents of the same degree, and one person has one father and one mother. The card file gives nothing to tell them apart — for that one must go to the entries below.

Family trees

Fragments of families assembled from the kinships the acts state outright. One fragment is as much as a single entry, or a group of entries, allows to be joined without guessing — not a whole family tree, only a certain piece of one.

The Jasieński family of Krasusy Łęcznowola — Paweł, Stefan and Marianna

confidence B — 5 acts

Three generations of one family from the village of Krasusy Łęcznowola, made up of two entries from the 1743 volume and three from 1744. Stefan Jasieński, son of the late Paweł, appears on 18 March 1743 (entry 232), when he gives Franciszek Krasuski a quittance for 40 złp and cancels a mortgage inscription, and on 29 March 1743 (entry 302), when Wojciech Krasuski cedes to him 24 złp inscribed by that same Franciszek Krasuski — the same village, the same debtor, eleven days apart. A year later, on 27 April 1744, Marianna, daughter of Stefan, wife of Aleksander Krasuski Zychowicz, gives her father a quittance for her dowry and trousseau and renounces her paternal and maternal estates (entry 1415); her husband settles 150 złp of dower upon her (1416), after which the two make a mutual life estate (1417). A dowry quittance with a renunciation is a formula addressed to a living father — Stefan sees his daughter off and accepts her renunciation.

The Jasiński family — the judge of Czersk and his sons, the regents

confidence B — 13 acts

A family from the staff of the court office, plainly different from the petty nobility who fill these registers. The filiation is supplied by the chancery itself, and twice over. Entry 1364 (20 April 1744, scan 57-052, folio 50v) names the parties thus: “…Et Joseph[us] Lucoviensis ac Baltasar Terrestris et Castrensis Cernen[sis] Regentes Jasienscy ol[im] G. Joannis Jasienski Judicis Cernen[sis] filij…” — Józef and Baltazar, brothers, sons of the late Jan Jasieński, judge of Czersk. This is repeated by entry 1989 (19 October 1744): Józef is “ol. G. Joannis Jasienski Judicis Cernens filio”. Jan Jasiński — judge of Czersk is still alive on 3 July 1743 (entry 703) and dead by 20 April 1744. Józef Jasiński — regent of the Łuków castle court records, that is the head of the castle chancery (entries 703, 934, 935, 1562, 19891992, 2047), married to Elżbieta Modrzewska (entry 1074); he buys land from the petty nobility systematically — in Jasionka (703), in Dziewule (1989) — which is a phenomenon worth recording in its own right: the castle chancery as a purchaser of estates in the district whose records it keeps. Baltazar Jasiński — land and castle regent of Czersk (entries 1041, 1042, 1364, 1365) acts on his brother’s side and pays out the sums through his own hands.

Caveat. The node “Jan Jasiński” also takes in entry 1041, in which the source does not call him anyone’s father — a namesake of his may have appeared there. This does not undermine the filiation, but the source does not confirm that these acts belong to him. The filiation of the two brothers is now attested by the source — an earlier version of this edition drew Baltazar with a broken line, as a hypothesis; entries 1364 and 1365, overlooked when the tree was first assembled, settle the matter outright, and the hypothesis has been withdrawn. The father’s office reads in the manuscript “Judicis Cernensis”, without the adjective “terrestris”; it has been recorded in abridged form as judge of Czersk, without prejudging whether the land judge of Czersk is meant. Unresolved: entries 1041 and 1042 (10 December 1743) feature Jan Jasiński, instigator of the Łuków castle court — alive, with the same sigil Gen., and it is Baltazar who pays out the sum on his behalf. Whether this is the same Jan the source does not say, the offices being incommensurable (judge of the Czersk land and instigator of the Łuków castle court); both entries have been left in the case, but the identification is the researcher’s decision, not the chancery’s record. The spelling of the surname fluctuates in the source: the manuscript of entries 13641365 has Jasienscy, entries 703, 1041 and 1989Jasiński, and entry 1989 also a majuscule resembling Ł. The PTG tags for scan 57-052 give “Baltazar Jasiński”, “Jan Jasiński” and “Józef Jasiński”, and the form Jasiński has been adopted after them in the indexes; in the translations the wording of the manuscript is kept. Beware of two other men named Jan Jasiński: entry 358 (8 April 1743) features Jan Jasiński, son of the late Stanisław, of whom the clerk noted “ignarus litterarum” — unlettered, and therefore he can be neither the judge nor the instigator; a third Jan, husband of Marianna née Dziewulska and father of Franciszka, Helena and Marcjanna, was already dead in January 1743 (entries 22, 412, 1556). Neither of them has been placed on the tree. Elżbieta Modrzewska is the sister of Wojciech Modrzewski (entry 1074); the source does not give her parents in these acts.

localities in the entry the village of Tchórzew Plewki

The noble (Nob.) Wawrzyniec Jasiński, son of the late noble (Nob.) Kazimierz, and brother german and natural successor of the late noble (Nob.) Paweł Jasiński, who died without issue – alongside the other co-successors – being of sound mind and body, deposed that in his own name and in the name of the nobles (Nob.) Franciszka, wife of Stanisław Ługowski, and Marcjanna and Helena, maidens, the said Jasińskie, **his stepdaughters**, for whom he stands surety, he gives a quittance to the noble (Nob.) Piotr Jastrzębski called Piasecki and to his successors for the sum of thirty Polish złoty – inscribed by the late noble (Nob.) Andrzej Ługowski to the said late noble (Nob.) Paweł Jasiński, the deponent's brother, by way of mortgage upon certain estates lying in the hereditary estate of the village of Tchórzew Plewki, before the present records on the Monday before the feast of St Andrew the Apostle in the Year of Our Lord 170… [the reading of the year incomplete] – and now in fact and effectively paid out to him, the deponent, by that party quitted as the perpetual acquirer of those estates. He gives a quittance and cancels that inscription.

notes and marginalia **Revision of the reading (scan 021, f. 17v, the fourth paragraph from the top of the left-hand column).** The manuscript: „N. Laurentius Jasinski **olim** N. Casimiri filius, olim vero N. Pauli Jasinski **steriliter vita functi** frater germanus et Successor naturalis, erga alios Consuccessores… Quia Ipse Suo et G. **Franciscae** Stanislai Ługowski Consortis, **Marcjannae** et **Helenae** Virginum, p[rae]f[a]t[arum] Jasinskich **filiastrarum suarum** nomine…”. Three things have been corrected: 1. **The given name of Ługowski's wife: Franciszka, not Marianna.** This agrees with entries 412–414 (22 April 1743), where the same woman appears as **Franciszka Jasińska, daughter of the late Jan Jasiński, wife of Stanisław Ługowski**. The discrepancy noted earlier, „Marianna czy Franciszka”, **disappears** — it was an error of reading, not a contradiction in the source. 2. **The third of the maidens is Marcjanna, not a second Marianna.** The manuscript has „Marcianne”; so do the PTG tags for scan 021 („Marcjanna Jasińska”) and entry 413. 3. **„filiastrae” means stepdaughters, not brother's daughters.** Wawrzyniec is their **stepfather**, not their paternal uncle. Nor are they Paweł's daughters — Paweł died **without issue** („steriliter vita functi”), as the same line states outright. Their father was, according to entries 412–414, **the late Jan Jasiński**; the present entry does not give his name, and for that reason no father has been recorded for them in the person records. The sisters' uterine brother, Ludwik Osmulski (entry 412), attests to a further marriage of their mother.

localities in the entry the estate of Tchórzew Plewki

The noble (Nob.) Wawrzyniec Jasiński, being of sound mind and body, deposed that he gives a quittance to the nobles (Nob.) Maciej and Anna Borkowski, husband and wife, and likewise to Piotr Jastrzębski, and to their successors, for the suit and official action brought and lodged with the present office on account of the insult done to him, of sundry charges, of an assault and of the damages inflicted; further, for the protestations, the relations, the first decrees and the decree of condescension issued by the present office on the ground of the estate of Tchórzew Plewki and lodged with the records of the present office on the Monday after Reminiscere Sunday in Lent of the current year by way of oblation; as also for the penalties adjudged by that same decree together with a sum of six Polish złoty for damages – and this because they were in fact paid out to him by the parties quitted according to the tenor of that same decree of condescension. Those decrees, the protestations and the relations he cancels.

notes and marginalia A note by the clerk: „Ignarus personae litterarum” – the deponent cannot write. The reading has been verified afresh against the original and against the corrected tags for scan 038: the text plainly has „tum Petrum Jastrzębski”, that is Piotr JASTRZĘBSKI (earlier read wrongly as Jasiński – the deponent is Wawrzyniec Jasiński, which was the source of the mistake). The decree of condescension was lodged by oblation on the Monday after Reminiscere Sunday 1743 = 11 March 1743.

notes and marginalia **A revision of the reading (at the User's remark).** The manuscript (scan 56-051, f. 47v, line 2 of the paragraph) has: „Ipse D. Stephano Jasienski **ol. N. Pauli filio** ejusq[ue] Successoribus de Summa Viginti Quatuor Flor. Polon.”. The earlier translation read that abbreviation as „et” and made Paweł the **son** of Stefan. The matter is decided by the genitive **„Pauli”** (with a son it would be „Paulo filio ejus”) and by the shape of the abbreviation: **the clerk writes „ol.” here as an „o” with a stroked shaft**, which is deceptively like „et”. The same abbreviation stands a line above in „Albertus Krasuski **ol.** G. Basilij filius”. **The genealogical consequence:** entries 232 and 302 speak of **one and the same person** — Stefan Jasieński, son of the late Paweł — and of the same village, **Krasuse Łęcznowola**, and even of the same debtor (Franciszek Krasuski). See the tree „Jasieńscy z Krasus Łęcznowoli”.

The persons agree with the PTG tags for scan 167. **A correction of the siglum (a revision on scan 167, the left column, the line „…sanaq[ue] agens Quia Ipsa G. Joannem | Jasienski Instigatorem Castr. Lucovien. illiusq[ue] Successores…”):** Jan Jasiński bears here the siglum **G. (Generosus)**, not Nob., just as Baltazar does; the earlier translation wrongly gave „(Nob.)”. The Ryszkowski and the Gołaski in the same entry are **N. (Nobiles)** — the chancery consistently keeps the two circles apart. **The question of Jan's identity:** the father of Józef and Baltazar, known from entries 1364, 1365 and 1989, is **Jan Jasieński, judge of Czersk, who died before 20 April 1744**. The Jan of the present entry is alive on 10 December 1743 and holds the office of **instigator of the Łuków castle court**. For identifying the two speak the same siglum Gen., the surname rare in these registers, and the fact that the sum on Jan's behalf is paid out **through the hands of Baltazar** — an attested son of the judge; against it speaks the difference of the offices (a judge of the Czersk land and an instigator of the Łuków castle are ranks not to be compared). **The source gives the kinship of Jan the instigator with no one at all**, and the matter has not been decided here.

Jan Jasieński, judge of Czersk, on the other side, being of sound mind and body, deposed and acknowledged that mutually and reciprocally they give a quittance to one another and to their successors, and namely:

the nobles (Nob.) Ryszkowski to the well-born (Gen.) regents – for the sum of two hundred and three Polish złoty and twenty-two groszy, first and originally contracted by the late magnificent (Magn.) […] upon a certain hand-written bond, of the act and the date expressed in it, with the late magnificent (Magn.) Michał Karwowski, judge of […] [uncertain reading]; and thereafter yielded up to the nobles (Nob.) Ryszkowski by the very reverend (Adm. Rev.) (Perillustris et Adm. Rev.) Kazimierz Karwowski, parish priest at Drążgowo [uncertain reading], son of the late magnificent (Magn.) Ludwik – in his own name and in the name of [Andrzej] Karwowski, his brother german;

and the well-born (Gen.) regents to the nobles (Nob.) Ryszkowski – for the suit and official action, brought first before the present office by a summons, and thereafter by way of appeal before the tribunal court of the Kingdom at Lublin, likewise for the suit over the surrender of a fugitive subject;

and moreover for the whole and entire process and course of the suit, by reason of the satisfaction rendered on both sides; the bond mentioned above, the deed of cession, or rather the whole course of the suit and the process, they cancel.

[Autograph signatures:] Paweł Ryszkowski (the second unlettered) — Josephus Jasieński, regent — Baltazar Jasieński

notes and marginalia The entry passes from scan 57-051 (f. 50r) to 57-052 (f. 50v); it is joined into one item. There appear here **two court regents** – Józef Jasieński (regent of Łuków) and Baltazar Jasieński (regent of the land and castle court records of Czersk) – and **the very reverend Kazimierz Karwowski, parish priest at Drążgowo** (the siglum Perillustris et Admodum Reverendus). The suit passed from the Łuków castle court **by way of appeal to the Crown Tribunal at Lublin** and comprised **the surrender of a fugitive subject** (extraditio subditi) – in the year 1744 this is the first mention of a dispute over a fugitive. The amount is given with groszy: 203 złp 22 gr. The surname of the original debtor and the office of judge held by Karwowski have been read with uncertainty. **A correction of the reading:** the word before „G. Adami Ryszkowski filij” (scan 57-051, the last line of the right-hand column) is **„ol.”**, not „et” — Adam Ryszkowski **was dead**. The comparison with a certain „et” in the same line („Paulus **et** Michael”) decides the matter: there a low „e” with a short „t” is to be seen, while here an „o” with a tall stroke crossed through. The grammar itself says the same — the genitive „Adami … filij” calls for „olim”, not „et”. **The spelling of the surname:** the manuscript has „Jasienscy”, the PTG tags for scan 57-052 — „Baltazar Jasiński”, „Jan Jasiński”, „Józef Jasiński”; in the indexes the form **Jasiński** has been adopted after the tags, while in the translation the form of the manuscript has been kept. **A revision made while compiling the genealogical trees (the reading checked on scan 57-052, f. 50v, the first four lines of the left-hand column):** „…filij fratres inter se germani ab una Et Joseph[us] Lucoviensis ac Baltasar Terrestris et Castrensis Cernen[sis] Regentes Jasienscy **ol[im] G. Joannis Jasienski Judicis Cernen[sis] filij** parte ab altera…”. The manuscript therefore gives two things which the earlier translation did not render: the father **was already dead** („olim”) on 20 April 1744, and he held the office of **judge of Czersk** („Judicis Cernensis”). This is **the only place in the whole corpus where the source calls Baltazar outright the son of Jan** — hitherto that filiation was treated as the researcher's hypothesis. The same office is confirmed independently by entry 1989 of 19 October 1744 (scan 57-186), where Józef is „ol. G. Joannis Jasienski **Judicis Cernens** filio”. The name of the office stands without the adjective „terrestris”; *iudex* alone with the adjective of a land denotes in this chancery a land judge, but since the source does not say so outright, in the study it has been written down concisely as **judge of Czersk**.

localities in the entry the town of Łuków (the place where the bond was drawn up)

Those same regents on both sides strengthen and confirm a certain hand-written bond – of the act and the date here, at Łuków, on the twenty-first day of April of the present year 1744, drawn up, subscribed with their own hands and strengthened by the penalty expressed in that same bond – in all its obligations and provisos contained in it.

notes and marginalia **A discrepancy of dating recorded openly:** the entry stands under the session of the Monday after Misericordia Sunday (20 April 1744), while the bond officially strengthened bears the date 21 April 1744 – a day later. Neither the date of the session nor the date of the bond was „poprawiano” (corrected); it is possible that the entry was added after the session, or that the bond was antedated to the following day. The official confirmation (roboratio) immediately after the quittance (entry 1364) closes the whole matter between the Jasieński and the Ryszkowski. The parties are the same as in entry 1364, where the chancery names them with their filiation: **Józef and Baltazar, sons of the late Jan Jasieński, judge of Czersk**.
