The well-born (Gen.) Jan Szaniawski, son of the well-born (Gen.) Tomasz Szaniawski, being of sound mind and body, deposed that he gives a quittance to the magnificent (Magn.) Jerzy Szaniawski, deputy cup-bearer of Lublin, cavalry captain of a light-horse banner, and likewise to the well-born (Gen.) Paweł Jastrzębski and Franciszek Gołaski, companions of that same banner, and to their successors – for the suit and official action before the present office, brought on account of certain claims, and likewise for the protestation made by himself before the castle court records against that same magnificent (Magn.) Szaniawski, deputy cup-bearer of Lublin, and against the said well-born (Gen.) Jastrzębski and Gołaski, as also for the other protestations, relations and summonses – by reason of the sufficient satisfaction of all and each of the claims arising up to this day, and this on account of the amicable settlement and the satisfaction rendered to him; and the said protestation, the relations and any others whatsoever [lodged] against them, and any terms whatsoever, he cancels.
[Autograph signature:] Jan Szaniawski
notes and marginalia A discrepancy with the PTG tag resolved: the tag for scan 130 gives „Grzegorz Szaniawski”, but the manuscript writes „Georgium” (Jerzy), and the tag for scan 148 – where the same person appears as deputy cup-bearer of Lublin – already gives „Jerzy Szaniawski”. The reading adopted: Jerzy. The remaining persons agree with the tags. The offices: „Pincerna Lublinensis” – deputy cup-bearer of Lublin; „Praefectus Cohortis levis armaturae” – cavalry captain of a light-horse banner.

notes and marginalia A rare entry of dealing in human beings within the land law: the object of the donation is the fugitive subject himself, together with his „prosapia” (offspring) and the right of searching for him. **Revision of the reading („olim” instead of „et”).** The original translation read the word before the father's given name as „et” and made Jan the **son** of Walery. In this chancery hand the abbreviation **„ol.” (olim)** is written as an „o” with a stroke through the shaft and is deceptively like „et”; the grammatical case decides the matter — the genitive with „filio” means **„to the son [of someone]”**, not „and to the son”. The direction of the filiation is confirmed by entry 954 — **from the same day and concerning the same parties** („Jan Szaniawski, syn zm. Walerego”) — and by entry 419, in which Katarzyna Karwowska is the widow left by the late Walery Szaniawski. The pattern was checked against the manuscript: entry 246 (scan 56-043, „Antonio Domaszowski … **Casimiri filio**”) and entry 302 (scan 56-051, „Stephano Jasienski **ol. N. Pauli filio**”).

they give a quittance, and the enforcement clause, as far as the remitted marks and the tower confinement are concerned, they cancel.
[The deponents] unlettered.
notes and marginalia An interesting onomastic record: the manuscript names „Albertum et alterum Albertum Szaniawskie”, that is two namesakes – Wojciech and the second Wojciech Szaniawski; the PTG tag for scan 166 notes only one „Wojciecha Szaniawskiego”. Both dates verified (16 August 1743 – a Friday; 5 December 1743 – a Thursday, the vigil of St Nicholas). notes and marginalia The first entry of the 1744 volume (shelf mark 57). The new register begins with the formula „In Nomine Domini Amen” and the title „Protocollon Inscriptionum Annum 1744”. The date verified: the Circumcision of Our Lord, 1 January 1744, fell on a Wednesday, and the morrow was Thursday 2 January 1744. The decree comes from the session of the courts of the office's suits of 4 February 1743 – the same from which quittances were given in the preceding volumes (entries 995, 1000, 1002, 1005, 1016).
