Searching for one person in the source editions
The search boxes of the editions of the notarial deeds, the hearth tax and the poll tax, and the search box of the Armorials, have a drop-down “Search options” next to them. The most important is “One person”: the given name and surname — or any two other words — must then belong to the same person, in any order, also when inflected. A query for Michał Jasiński therefore does not return every record that names some Michał and some Jasiński. Putting the words in quotation marks does the same.
A plus before a word adds a condition: the word must occur in the same record but need not belong to the person searched for, for example Michał Jasiński +Jasionka. A minus before a word leaves out the results in which that word stands, for example Jasiński -Chromiński. The masculine form of a surname also finds the feminine and inflected ones (Jasińska, z Jasińskich), and a surname also its older spellings (Jasieński).
In the notarial deeds the search by default leaves out persons who were present at the deed only as witnesses, appraisers, interpreters or officials, and the neighbours of the land — witnesses were often neighbours and acquaintances of the same surname, frequently from a family other than the one sought. The option “All persons, witnesses included” gives more results, but together with that noise.
