Notarial records — Łuków and Siedlce, first half of the 19th century

Deeds of the notaries (pisarze aktowi) of Łuków and Siedlce, first half of the 19th century — further notaries will be added. At present the deeds of Józef Kalasanty Szaniawski, notary of the Łuków district, 1810–1825: the Jasiński family, families from around Jasionka, wills, inventories and auctions. The Jasińskis of Jasionka used the Siedlce notaries far more often than those of Łuków. The deeds themselves are given in Polish.

The manuscripts were read by Claude AI models and the family relations were checked a second time against every deed. Doubtful places carry [?] or “?” — please consult the manuscript of the entry before drawing conclusions.

DeedDateSubject (repertory, Polish)Jasińskis in the deedReading

Family trees assembled from the relations recorded in the deeds. The same person in different deeds is joined only when, besides first name and surname, an anchor agrees: father, mother, spouse, nickname, children or siblings (for a frequent name, together with the place or a neighbouring deed); a different father, mother or nickname rules a join out. A person found in several deeds shows the basis of the join. Where spellings differ, the full reading prevails, then the first-page reading. The trees cover only what the deeds read say. Names are in Polish; the number of a deed opens it.

Caution: high risk of error. The trees were assembled automatically from the relations in the deeds, and the same person in different deeds was recognised by anchors — despite cautious rules, two different people may have been joined, or one person left split. Treat as a lead and check every relation in the deeds (deed numbers at each person).

An overview of the deeds

Two different sets: the kinds of deeds and the fees come from the notary’s repertory, i.e. all his deeds of 1810–1825 (7 699 deeds). Persons, estates, offices, families, places and sums come only from the deeds selected for reading (3 281 deeds of families around Jasionka, mostly petty gentry) — they describe that milieu, not the whole district.

How to use

  • The search above the tabs works on all of them at once; the number at each tab shows how many items match. Case and Polish diacritics do not matter, and “Jasieński” also finds “Jasiński”. With several words, all must occur in the row.
  • The search also covers the full readings: a deed found only there is marked “found in the full reading”.
  • The year buttons narrow all tabs to the deeds of one year.
  • The number of a deed opens its window: the repertory entry, a summary, the persons, the full reading, the manuscript of the entry (with page turning and zoom) and a link to Szukaj w Archiwach. The address changes to #akt-szan-NO-YEAR (with the notary’s mark), which opens that deed.
  • Esc closes the deed window and the manuscript; long lists grow with the “Show next” button.

How to read

  • Tables give modernised first names, standardised surnames and present-day place names, with the wording of the deed beneath; “?” marks a probable identification. The search finds both forms of a person’s name.
  • Modern spelling: deed subjects, relations and full transcriptions are given in present-day Polish spelling — i for the conjunction y, j for the former y and i (Wojciech, niżej), -cja for -cya (Rezygnacja), missing diacritics restored (Świadek, Józef). Vocabulary, inflection, capitals and punctuation stay as in the deed. The scans of the deeds keep the original spelling.
  • Scribal abbreviations expanded in the text: złp, Zło Poll, Złt Polt — złotych polskich (Polish złoty); mp, mpp at a signature — własnoręcznie (manu propria). Others stay: JW — Jaśnie Wielmożny (Right Honourable), JMć — Jegomość (His Grace), Wny — Wielmożny, Ur. — Urodzony (well-born, i.e. noble), X. — priest. In the table columns: pow. — district, par. — parish, zm. — deceased, zw. — called.
  • “Relations” are the family relations in the words of the deed (Polish). “?” marks a relation the deed does not state outright; [?] marks an illegible letter or word.
  • “Niegdy” in a deed means that the person was no longer alive.
  • Nicknames (przydomki) have a column of their own.
  • “Subject” is the wording of the notary’s repertory; where it differs from the deed, the deed prevails.

What is missing

  • Deeds Szan. 267/1812 and Szan. 566/1818 were not found in the volumes — the repertory lists them, but the volumes hold the neighbouring deeds at their places.
  • Of deed Szan. 142/1813 only the end survives (an attached leaf and the last two pages).
  • The repertory sometimes differs from the deed (e.g. Szan. 225/1812, Szan. 313/1820, Szan. 25/1821, Szan. 128/1825); the deed prevails.
