Jan Martynowski – brother and sister german to one another, and the sister with the assistance of her brother, present on the other side, being of sound mind and body, deposed that mutually and reciprocally they give a quittance to one another for the suits and actions brought and begun before the present office in respect of whatsoever claims, further for the penal decrees, the protestations, the relations and for all and each of the claims arising up to this day – by reason of the agreement concluded between them and of the satisfaction rendered to one another; and the protestations, the relations, the decrees and all the executions pending in whatever degree they annul and cancel.

The noble (Nob.) Anna Olszewska, daughter of the late noble (Nob.) Wawrzyniec Olszewski and wife of the noble (Nob.) Jan Martynowski – by reason of the absence of her husband, with the assistance of the noble (Nob.) Michał Olszewski, her brother – being of sound mind and body, deposed that to the noble (Nob.) Jan Szaniawski, son of the late noble (Nob.) Walery, and to his successors she mortgages her hereditary estate, that is: three strips of arable, beginning at the Żurnica road [the name – uncertain reading] and running towards the Zarzecz boundaries, between the baulks of the noble (Nob.) Stanisław Olszewski called Abramik on the one side and of the noble (Nob.) Maciej Olszewski on the other; further three strips of arable, beginning at Żurnica and running towards the road [the name read with uncertainty], between the baulks of the noble (Nob.) Jakub Olszewski on the one side and of the noble (Nob.) Stanisław Olszewski on the other – situated and lying in the hereditary estate of the village of Olszewnica, vacant, with everything – for the sum of twenty-four Polish złoty, from now for three years, with the term falling at the feast of St Luke the Evangelist in the year 1746; and thereafter from year to year. She consented to intromission forthwith and promised warranty, and this under a penalty of twenty-four Polish złoty and the forum of the present office.

The deponent unlettered (in the source: „Ignara scire litteras”) – the entry bears no signature.

notes and marginalia Another example of substitute assistance: in the absence of her husband the married woman is assisted by her brother german. The persons, the cognomen „Abramik” and the village of Olszewnica agree with the PTG tags for scan 155. **Revision of the reading („olim” instead of „et”).** The original translation read the word before the father's given name as „et” and made Jan the **son** of Walery. In this chancery hand the abbreviation **„ol.” (olim)** is written as an „o” with a stroke through the shaft and is deceptively like „et”; the grammatical case decides the matter — the genitive with „filio” means **„to the son [of someone]”**, not „and to the son”. The direction of the filiation is confirmed by entry 954 — **from the same day and concerning the same parties** („Jan Szaniawski, syn zm. Walerego”) — and by entry 419, in which Katarzyna Karwowska is the widow left by the late Walery Szaniawski. The pattern was checked against the manuscript: entry 246 (scan 56-043, „Antonio Domaszowski … **Casimiri filio**”) and entry 302 (scan 56-051, „Stephano Jasienski **ol. N. Pauli filio**”).
