Łuków extracts in the records of the Crown Tribunal of Lublin

Official extracts from the castle and land court books of Łuków, which the parties submitted as evidence in cases before the Crown Tribunal in Lublin. For each entry: the text in the original language with abbreviations expanded, a full Polish translation, a summary, the persons with their role, standing and office, the manuscript pages and a link to the archival unit in Szukaj w Archiwach. Type a surname, first name, place or office in the box below. The glossary below explains old words; what was read and how — in the Guide (last tab).

The manuscripts were read and translated with Claude AI models: the text of every entry was transcribed in the original language and translated sentence by sentence, without shortening or additions. Doubtful places are marked [?] — before drawing conclusions it is worth checking the manuscript of the entry.

Whom to search for

Adding: a plus before a word — the word must occur in the same entry but need not belong to the person searched for, e.g. Michał Jasiński +Jasionka. Excluding: a minus before a word leaves out results containing it, e.g. Jasiński -Chromiński. Surnames: the masculine form also finds the feminine and inflected ones (Jasiński → Jasińska, z Jasińskich), and a surname also its older spellings (Jasieński).

All entries — by archival unit (reference, consecutive images), by date or alphabetically (by the first person in the entry; uncertain surnames at the end). “Subject” gives the kind of entry in the words of its heading. The number of an entry opens it: summary, persons, transcription, translation and manuscript pages.

Every person in every entry has a row of their own — the number at the tab counts appearances in the entries, not different people: an official who signed many extracts has as many rows as entries. “Standing and office” and “Relations” are given in the words of the translation (Polish). Under the name — where else on the site the surname or the place occurs.

Persons for whom the entry gives an office, dignity or title — officers of the castle and the land court (vicegerent, burgrave, clerk, corrector of the extract, bailiff), judges, starosts, dignitaries. “Wielmożny” is a courtesy title, not a function — such persons are listed separately under the last button. The office is given in the words of the Polish translation, in the nominative.

Family trees built from the relations recorded in the entries. The same person in different entries is joined only when, besides the first name and surname, an anchor agrees: father, mother, spouse, children or siblings. The trees contain only what the entries read so far say. The number of an entry opens it.

The trees are built from the relations stated in the entries themselves. Even so, mistakes are possible: two different people taken for one, or one person split in two. Treat a tree as a lead and check every relation in the entry — the entry numbers are given at each person.

A link stands at a person when the surname or the place also occurs in the notarial deeds, the Siedlce mortgage registers or the surname entries of the Łuków castle court records 1743–1744. The link opens a search in that source — it does not join persons: the same name in another century is usually someone else.

What this edition is

The Crown Tribunal, the highest court of the nobility of the Polish Crown, heard cases from Lesser Poland at its sessions in Lublin. The parties brought extracts to it as evidence — official copies from the books of the castle court and the land court, issued at their request and certified by an official (“Ex actis castrensibus Lucoviensibus extractum”, “correxit …”). The Łuków extracts in the Tribunal records are held by the State Archive in Lublin: fonds 35/16/0 Trybunał Koronny Lubelski, series 3.10 “Lublin voivodeship”. This page covers units 35/16/0/3.10/461 (Extracts from the records of the Łuków castle courts, 1687–1728), 35/16/0/3.10/462 (Extract from the records of the Łuków castle courts, 1730–1793), 35/16/0/3.10/465 (Extracts from the records of the Łuków land courts, 1673–1792).

The extracts carry the content of entries of the Łuków books: declarations and protests of the nobility, bailiffs’ reports on the service of summonses, copies of documents, decrees, powers of attorney, receipts and records of sums. They give first names, surnames, offices, estates and places, and often family relations — which makes them a source for the families of the Łuków land, including those from around Jasionka.

Who runs this edition and how it is made

The site is run by a genealogy enthusiast from the Jasiński family of Jasionka. He chooses the sources, sets the rules of reading and transcription, compares the results with the manuscripts and makes corrections; his remarks enter the data as settled decisions. The readings, tables and analyses are prepared with Claude AI models, and every stage is checked by scripts and by a blind control reading. Uncertain places are marked, and every statement in the analyses and summaries refers to a specific deed or entry.

What was read

As of 16 October 2026. Units 462 and 465 were read in full, page by page; from unit 461 — 98 pages of 385 images of the unit. Every entry was transcribed in the original language and translated into Polish in full; with a summary, the persons and notes on uncertain places. Leaves without text (technical leaves of the archive, blank versos, repeated takes of the same leaf — 115 pages) were left out. A verso with the title of the case stands at its entry (108), and when its entry is not on the pages read — separately (19).

How to use

  • The search above the tabs works on all of them at once; the number at each tab shows how many items match. Case and Polish diacritics do not matter, and “Jasieński” also finds “Jasiński”. It searches the persons, headings and summaries, and after a moment also the transcription and the translation. The search options (one person, plus, minus, bailiffs and officials) work as on the notarial deeds page.
  • While searching, a line “In the notarial deeds of Łuków and Siedlce” also appears: how many persons with the first name, surname or place searched for are in the 19th-century notarial deeds, with a link to them.
  • The year buttons narrow the tabs to the entries of the chosen years, and the unit buttons — to the extracts from the castle court or the land court records.
  • The number of an entry opens its window: the kind, summary, date as worded, persons, notes on the reading, a link to Szukaj w Archiwach — to the fonds and the unit, with the image number — and below, the transcription and the full translation. The “Show the manuscript pages” button opens the pages of the entry; “Enlarge” shows them at full size. The address changes to #akt-tr462-0398-1 (unit, image, number of the entry on the page); the full address is also shown in the window, with a “Copy the address” button.
  • Esc closes the entry window; long lists grow with the “Show next” button.

How to read

  • The entry number is the unit and the image on which the entry begins: “462/398” — unit 462, image 398; L and P are the left and right page of an opening; “nr 2” — the second entry beginning on the same page. In the transcription the sign [s. 399L] opens the next page.
  • The transcription gives the text in the original language — usually chancery Latin with Polish passages — with abbreviations expanded; spelling of letters and names follows the manuscript. [pieczęć] (seal), [stempel] (stamp), [parafa] (initials) and the like describe what stands on the leaf apart from the text.
  • The translation (Polish) is faithful and full: sentence by sentence, in the order of the original, without shortening or additions; offices are rendered strictly after the Latin title. The summary is not a translation, only a short abstract.
  • Persons: the first name in its Polish form, at first occurrence with the Latin wording in brackets; the surname in the nominative after the manuscript. “Relations” are family relations stated in the text — none are added for witnesses and bailiffs.
  • Dates: a church date (“feria secunda post festum …”) was converted to a calendar date only when the conversion is certain; the wording of the date is given in the entry window.
  • [?] — an illegible letter or word, or one read as probable; the notes on the reading say what is in doubt.
  • Links at a person (“in the notarial deeds: …”, “in the Siedlce mortgage registers: …”, “in the Łuków castle court records 1743–1744: …”) say that the same surname or place also stands in that source and open a search in it — they do not mean it is the same person.

Where the manuscript pages come from

The manuscript pages at an entry come from the units published in Szukaj w Archiwach, in a version improved for legibility: evened lighting, higher contrast, sharpened writing, the opening split into pages. The original is in Szukaj w Archiwach — the link to the unit and the image number stand at every entry.

What is missing

  • Further pages of unit 461 — 98 of 385 images read; entries will follow with further readings.
  • The other units with Łuków extracts in the Tribunal fonds (3.10/457–460, 463, 464, 466, 467) — not read yet.
  • Dates of some entries (37) — when the beginning of an entry stands on an earlier leaf, outside the pages read, or the date is illegible.
