Hearth tables of the Drohiczyn land, 1790
Hearth tables of 1790: villages of the Drohiczyn land and Niwiska parish, holders of shares and numbers of houses. Type a surname, first name or place in the box below.
More about this edition
Hearth tables drawn up in 1790 in the villages of the Drohiczyn land and, from the Liw land, in Niwiska parish. Each table gives the place and the parish, and in its rows the holders of the successive shares, often with a predecessor (“po Janie” — after the late Jan) and the number of houses in the columns. Type a surname, first name, place or parish in the box below. The glossary below explains old words; what was read and how — in the Guide (last tab).
The manuscript was read with Claude AI models: every table was transcribed as worded in the manuscript and its persons listed with their role and relations. Doubtful places are marked [?] — before drawing conclusions it is worth checking the table in Skanoteka (link at every table).

Adding: a plus before a word — the word must occur in the same table but need not belong to the person searched for, e.g. Jasiński +Jasionka. Excluding: a minus before a word leaves out results containing it, e.g. Jasiński -Jastrzębski. Surnames: the masculine form also finds the feminine and inflected ones (Jasiński → Jasińska, Jasińskiego), and a surname also its older spellings (Jasieński). Years: e.g. Jan Jasiński 1820–1840 or od 1820 do 1840. Maiden name: z Jasińskich, z domu Jasińska. Old spelling: Woyciech = Wojciech. “One person” turns on by itself for a given name with a surname; while searching, results are ordered by relevance until you choose another order.

About this tab
Every person in every table has a row of their own — the number at the tab counts appearances, not different people: a holder with shares in several places has as many rows as tables. A late predecessor (“po Janie”) is listed as a person mentioned. Under the name — where else on the site the surname or the place occurs.

About this tab
Persons for whom the table gives an office, dignity or title: officials of the Drohiczyn land (judges, chamberlains, stewards, surveyors), the civil-military commissioners who signed the tables, dignitaries and clergy. “Wielmożny” is a courtesy title, not a function — such persons are listed separately under the last button.

By parish
The parish after the heading of the table, given as today’s name of the parish seat; when the heading does not give it — after the neighbouring tables of the same parish. The numbers of hearths stand at each table — the scribes totalled them in different ways, so they are not added up here.

The same surname and place in other sources of the site
A link stands at 4 727 persons because their surname or place also occurs in the notarial deeds, the Siedlce mortgage registers or the surname entries of the Łuków castle court records 1743–1744. The link opens a search in that source — it does not join persons.
What this source is
In 1789 the Four-Year Sejm passed a new tax on hearths and ordered the hearths of the whole country to be listed. The owners then filed declarations (“podanie”), and in 1790 the civil-military order commissions of each land checked them village by village. That is how the hearth tables came about: one for every place, with a heading (place, parish, land, often the owner), rows for the successive shares and houses, and columns — manor houses, inns, breweries, mills, peasant hearths, cottagers’ and craftsmen’s hearths, hearths hidden in or added since the 1789 declaration. Below the table stands a certificate of its truth, signed by the holder or a commissioner.
In the Drohiczyn land most villages were held by “różni Panowie” — several petty-gentry owners — and divided into many shares. The table then names the holder of each share and, for an inherited share, also the late predecessor (“po Janie” — after the late Jan) or his “heirs”. The tables are thus a list of the gentry families of the area in a single year, place by place.
The tables are in two units published in the Skanoteka of the Polish Genealogical Society: “Tabele dymów ziemi drohickiej 1790” (unit 305) and — from the Liw land — “Lustracja dymów ziemi liwskiej 1790” (unit 306), of which only Niwiska parish is on this page (unit 306, 37 tables). A link to the table’s page in Skanoteka stands at every table.
Who runs this edition and how it is made
The site is run by a genealogy enthusiast from the Jasiński family of Jasionka. He chooses the sources, sets the rules of reading and transcription, compares the results with the manuscripts and makes corrections; his remarks enter the data as settled decisions. The readings, tables and analyses are prepared with Claude AI models, and every stage is checked by scripts and by a blind control reading. Uncertain places are marked, and every statement in the analyses and summaries refers to a specific deed or entry.
What was read
All tables of both parts were read page by page: 324 tables on 335 manuscript pages, 264 places and 26 parishes. Every table was transcribed as worded in the manuscript — heading, column names, rows with hearth numbers, totals, certificate and signatures — and the persons were listed separately with their role and relations. Doubtful places were looked at a second and third time on enlargements and then compared with the rest of the volume and with the other sources of the site. What remained uncertain is marked [?].
How to use
- The search above the tabs works on all of them at once; the number at each tab shows how many items match. Case and Polish diacritics do not matter, and “Jasieński” also finds “Jasiński”. It searches the persons and headings, and after a moment also the wording of the tables.
- While searching, a line “In the notarial deeds of Łuków and Siedlce” also appears: how many persons with the name or place searched for are in the 19th-century notarial deeds.
- The parish buttons narrow the tabs to the tables of the chosen parishes; “Drohiczyn land” and “Liw land” select whole groups.
- The number of a table opens its window: place and parish, leaf of the volume, a link to the page in Skanoteka, the persons and the whole table as worded in the manuscript. The address changes to
#akt-dy305-144p; the full address is also shown in the window, with a “Copy the address” button. - The image (“image 144 (right)”) at a table and at a person links to that page of the manuscript in PTG Skanoteka; the link in the heading leads to the whole fonds.
- Esc closes the window; long lists grow with the “Show next” button.
How to read
- The table number is the unit and the page: “305/144P” — unit 305, image 144, right-hand page (L — left). A table continued on the next page (“Taż Wieś …” — the same village) is one table with two pages.
- The wording of a table follows the manuscript (Polish). In a row the figures stand as column number and number of hearths (“6: 30” — column 6, 30 hearths); the “Rubryki” line names the columns, with their meaning in square brackets.
- Persons: the first name in its present-day form, the surname in the nominative; where the manuscript differs, its wording stands in the table. “Po Janie” means that a share passed on after the late Jan — not always to a son; “sukcesorowie po …” are heirs entered together.
- The place is given as worded in the manuscript and, where it could be established with certainty, in its present-day form. Where the name cannot be seen (e.g. covered by a folded leaf) and the place was identified from its inhabitants and its position in the volume, the name is marked [?].
- [?] — an illegible letter or word, or one read as probable; […] — an illegible passage.
- Links at a person (“in the notarial deeds: …”) say that the same surname or place also stands in that source — they do not mean it is the same person.
What is missing
- The other parishes of the Liw land in unit 306 — only Niwiska parish is on this page.
- Tables of places missing from the volume although they lay in these parishes (e.g. Nakory in Suchożebry parish).
