Narzeczeni noszą to samo nazwisko (Kowieski/Kowieska) — pokrewieństwo w 4. stopniu prostym.

Whom to search for

Adding: a plus before a word — the word must occur in the same entry but need not belong to the person searched for, e.g. Jasiński +Jasionka. Excluding: a minus before a word leaves out results containing it, e.g. Jasiński -Jastrzębski. Surnames: the masculine form also finds the feminine and inflected ones (Jasiński → Jasińska), a form in -ówna or -owa the father’s or husband’s surname (Nowakówna → Nowak), and a surname also its older spellings (Jasieński). Years: e.g. Jan Jasiński 1820–1840 or from 1820 to 1840. Maiden name: z Jasińskich, z domu Jasińska. Old spelling: Woyciech = Wojciech. “One person” turns on by itself for a given name with a surname; while searching, results are ordered by relevance until you choose another order.

About the register

The marriage register of Zbuczyn parish in the former Łuków land, kept in Latin; on the cover a label with the number 4 and the years 1777–1810, on the first leaf the heading “Liber Metrices Copulatorum”. Each entry is a short record in the first person of the priest: the date, the priest and his office, the couple with their title of standing, civil state and place, the banns, the witnesses. The left margin gives the place and the number of the entry — the numbering runs on through the years: 1778 begins with number 59.

The whole register, years 1777–1810.

Before the marriage entries documents are sewn into the register — dispensations, a letter of the official, an episcopal indult. Their transcriptions and translations are at the top of the page, in the expanded description, below the glossary; they are not counted among the marriages.

About this tab

All marriages — in the order of the register or alphabetically (by the groom; uncertain surnames at the end). Under the name: the wording of the entry when it differs, title of standing (in brackets as written in the register), civil state, age and place; “d” at a place — assigned by default (see the Guide). A row or its number opens the entry with the Latin text and the translation. The last column — possible links to other sources on this site (the same couple), to be checked.

About this tab

Every person in every entry has a row of their own: the couple, the witnesses, the priest and, when the entry gives them, parents and late spouses. The number at the tab counts appearances, not different people: a priest has as many rows as marriages he officiated at. No kinship is added for witnesses and priests.

Officials — persons whom the entry names by an office (of the land, the castle court, a manor or the army), in any role, witnesses included — and grooms and brides styled magnificent (“M.” in the register, Magnificus); title and office in the words of the entry. A title after a father or husband (a judge’s daughter, a standard-bearer’s son) is not an office. The number opens the entry. The clergy — in the Clergy tab.

The most frequent witnesses

A witness’s first name, surname and title, when they stand at three or more marriages. The same name need not be the same person. The entries rarely say whether a witness was related to the couple, and no kinship is assumed here.

Places of the couples

The place of the groom and the bride in its present-day form, with the spellings of the register where they differ; “Marriages” shows the entries with that place (search option “Place”). For 548 persons the place was assigned by default (mark d in the Marriages table): the entry names one place without saying whose it is — it was taken as the bride’s, or the groom’s when he came from another parish.

Commentary

The marriage register has been read for the years 1777–1810: 2 301 entries. Of the years read in full, 1796 has the most marriages (114) and 1804 the fewest (45).

Couples married most often in February (840) and January (380), least often in December (2), April (12) and September (37).

Both noble — 1144 marriages, both peasants — 1040, couples across estates — 13.

At least one of the couple had been widowed in 703 marriages (31 %): widower and maiden — 382, bachelor and widow — 211, widower and widow — 110.

A parish other than that of the register is given for 195 of the spouses (see the table below).

Most marriages were celebrated by: Franciszek Kurowski (421), Adam Tarczewski (347), Michał Iwanowski (235), Józef Borowski (181), Marcin Krykient (104), Stefan Długołęcki (103), Łukasz Plewczyński (80), Michał Kryński (74), Borgiasz Popędkiewicz (65), Stanisław Toczyski (52), Jakub Świeszewski (46), Mateusz Sobiczewski (45), Piotr Węgleski (42), Maciej Pełkowski (39), Seweryn Pachta (38), Ignacy Czerski (37), Jan Topczewski (34), Wawrzyniec Wagner (34), Polikarp Czarnocki (30), Jan Ziemiański (29), Alojzy Chełstowski (20), Franciszek Ksawery Paweł Puławski (20), Leon Izydor Modrzewski (19), Norbert Załęcki (19), Mikołaj Wrzosek (19), Kajetan Czyszkowski (16), Kanty Woźnikowski (14), Kurowski (14), Polikarp Sikorski (13), Borgiasz (12), Tymoteusz (11) (full list — the Clergy tab).

The nobility by title

The nobility alone — the couples and witnesses with a noble title as worded in the register: noble (Nobilis, Generosus) and magnificent (Magnificus). A marriage counts under a title when the groom or the bride bears it; witnesses are counted by appearance. A title marked [?] is not counted.

The Jasiński family in the register

Entries naming a Jasiński (Jasieński) — the couple or the witnesses; the number opens the entry. The spelling of the surname was checked against the manuscript; the Jastrzębski family, often confused with it, is not counted.

What this register is

The marriage register of Zbuczyn parish — “Liber Metrices Copulatorum” — kept in Latin from 1777. The parish lay in the former Łuków land and included Jasionka, Pogonów, Zbuczyn and several dozen other places. Each entry was written by the officiating priest in the first person: “Ego … benedixi matrimonium inter …” — the day, the names of the couple with their title of standing (nobles, peasants) and civil state, the place, the banns, the witnesses.

A description of the register and the documents sewn into it (dispensations, a letter of the official, an indult) are in “About the register” above the Marriages table.

Who runs this edition and how it is made

The site is run by a genealogy enthusiast from the Jasiński family of Jasionka. He chooses the sources, sets the rules of reading and transcription, compares the results with the manuscripts and makes corrections; his remarks enter the data as settled decisions. The readings, tables and analyses are prepared with Claude AI models, and every stage is checked by scripts and by a blind control reading. Uncertain places are marked, and every statement in the analyses and summaries refers to a specific deed or entry.

What was read

The whole register, years 1777–1810. Every entry was transcribed in Latin with abbreviations expanded and translated into Polish in full; the couple, the witnesses, the priest, parents and late spouses were taken from the entry when it gives them. The register was read twice, independently, and the places where the readings differed were settled by a third reading; where even that left doubt, [?] stands.

How to use

  • The search above the tabs works on all of them at once; the number at each tab shows how many items match. Case and Polish diacritics do not matter, and “Jasieński” also finds “Jasiński”. It searches the persons and, after a moment, also the transcription and the translation. The search options (one person, plus, minus, witnesses and priests, role, place) work as on the notarial deeds page.
  • Narrow down: year buttons, standing of the couple (nobles, peasants, mixed couples) and civil state — of the groom (bachelor, widower) and of the bride (maiden, widow). Buttons of one group add up, groups work together: “widower” and “maiden” — widowers marrying maidens.
  • While searching, a line “In the notarial deeds of Łuków and Siedlce” also appears: how many persons with the first name, surname or place searched for are in the notarial deeds from 1810, with a link to them.
  • A row (or its number) opens the entry window: the date as worded, the margin, the priest, the formula, banns, dispensation, persons, notes on the reading, and below the Latin text and the full Polish translation. The address changes to #akt-zb-sl-1777-1; the full address is shown in the window with a “Copy the address” button. The address #w-zb-sl-1777-1 (register, year and number) opens the page at the row of that marriage.
  • Translations: the Latin text and the translation of all entries side by side, in order — with the same filters and search.
  • Esc closes the entry window; long lists grow with the “Show next” button.

How to read the table

  • Year and no. — the year from the page heading and the number from the margin, exactly as written: the numbering runs on through the years and may be shifted, have a gap or repeat — so it is in the register and so it stays. A marriage entered twice stands twice, with a note. From 1798 the margin also gives the house number (“No 14”); where only that is written, the entry number follows from the sequence and is shown in brackets, e.g. (1650).
  • Groom, bride — the name in its present-day Polish form (Jasieński = Jasiński), below it the wording of the entry when it differs (Latin, in the case of the sentence: “Adalbertum” = Wojciech), then the title of standing, civil state, age when given, and place. Titles: noble (Nobilis, Generosus), magnificent (Magnificus, wealthier nobility), peasant (Laboriosus), burgher (Famatus), provident (Providus), honest (Honestus). In brackets after the title — its wording in the register, as written (Laboriosos, Lab., Nobilem…). The scribe usually wrote the title once, before the groom, in the plural (“inter Laboriosos Michaelem … et Mariannam …”) — it then applies to both; an abbreviation of unclear number (Lab., Nob.) is treated the same way. When the title stands in the singular before the groom only (“inter Nobilem Antonium … et Agnetem …”), the bride is left without a title; when she has her own (“et Laboriosam Agnetem”, “Evam Nobilem”), hers is given. A mixed couple — a noble groom with a peasant bride, or the other way round.
  • d at a place — assigned by default: the entry names one place (in the margin or once in the text) without saying whose it is. It was then taken as the bride’s place, since marriages were usually celebrated in her parish, or as the groom’s when he came from another parish. The formula “utrosque de Villa …” (both of the same village) gives the place to both, without the mark.
  • Notes — witnesses with their title, the priest, a parish other than that of the register, dispensation, banns other than the usual three, parents and late spouse when the entry gives them.
  • In other sources on this site — links to notarial deeds and other sources where probably the same couple appears: the same names of both spouses. These are leads to be checked, not findings; with “?” when the match is weaker.
  • [?] — an illegible letter or word, or one read as probable; “[…]” — a gap. In the Latin text ⟨ ⟩ encloses a word written above the line, and [skreślone: …] a word struck out.
  • Persons: every person in every entry has a row — the number at the tab counts appearances, not different people. No kinship is added for witnesses and priests.

What is missing

  • An English translation of the entries themselves — the English page has its apparatus in English and the Polish translation.
