What this edition is

Books and files of the Office of the Mortgage Keeper at the Civil Tribunal in Siedlce, 1810–1826, held by the State Archive in Siedlce: fonds 62/150/0 — on Szukaj w Archiwach fonds 56328. The keeper ran the mortgage registers of the Siedlce department (from 1816 of the Podlasie voivodeship): he copied contracts into them in full (ingrossations), entered debts, dowries and pledges charged on estates (intabulations) and struck them out (extabulations). An entry usually cites the notarial deed it is based on (notary, date, number) — which makes the mortgage registers a second, independent source for the notarial deeds of these years: written by another scribe, often with other spellings of names, and at times saying more about the family than the deed.

The site is run by a genealogy enthusiast from the Jasiński family of Jasionka. He chooses the sources, sets the rules of reading and transcription and makes corrections; his remarks enter the data as settled decisions. The full text of the entries was not transcribed. Unit 42 — Księga intabulacji i ekstabulacji w Archiwum Hipotecznym Departamentu Siedleckiego, volumen I, 1810–1819 — is covered most fully: 1 441 pages, 1 988 entries. From the other units (39) a few pages each, to identify their contents: 1 349 entries in all.

How to use

• The search above the tabs works on all of them at once; the number at each tab shows how many items match. Case and Polish diacritics do not matter, and “Jasieński” also finds “Jasiński”. With several words, all must occur in the entry; the search options (one person, plus, minus) work as on the notarial deeds page.
• While searching, a line “In the notarial deeds of Łuków and Siedlce” also appears: how many persons with the first name, surname or place searched for are in the notarial deeds, with a link to those deeds. The notarial deeds page shows the matches in the mortgage registers in the same way.
• The year buttons narrow all tabs to the entries of the chosen years, and the books and files buttons — to the books (ingrossation, intabulation, sequestration) or the loose files (notes and files).
• The number of an entry opens its window: the transaction, estates, sums, the underlying deed as worded in the entry, a link to the deed in the notarial edition (where it is there), the persons and a link to Szukaj w Archiwach — to the fonds, with the unit and the image number. The address changes to #akt-h42-388 (unit and entry number); the full address is also shown in the window, with a “Copy the address” button.
• Esc closes the entry window; long lists grow with the “Show next” button.

How to read

• Tables give modernised first names, standardised surnames (as in the notarial deeds and the hearth tax files) and present-day place names, with the wording of the entry beneath. The search finds both forms and the spelling of the manuscript. Jasiński and Jasieński are one surname.
• The role says who the person was in the transaction: a party or the other party, with the function in brackets — debtor, creditor, seller, buyer, pledger, pledgee, assignor or assignee; “wspomniana” — a person only mentioned (a former owner, a late parent, a neighbour of the land).
• “Relations” are the family relations in the words of the entry (Polish). “?” marks a relation the entry does not state outright; [?] marks an illegible letter or word.
• The underlying deed is given as worded in the entry: the notary or office, place, date and number of the deed the entry is based on. Sums are as given in the entry (Polish złoty, grosze, ducats).
• The “Kind” column of the Entries tab: an entry in a book, a note, a copy of a deed or a letter; “początek na wcześniejszej stronie” — an entry whose beginning stands on a page not read yet.

What is missing

• The full text of the entries — the page gives the persons and the data of the entry; the whole wording is in the manuscript (a link to Szukaj w Archiwach at every entry).
• The witnesses of the underlying deeds — the mortgage entries usually do not repeat them, and the reading did not list them.
• Dates of some entries (108) — they stand in the order of the book, next to the neighbouring entries.
